Scientists invented a new material that gets thicker as you stretch it

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Most of us think we have a pretty solid grasp on basic physics, and one of the assumptions we’ve come to form is that any material gets thinner as it’s stretched. It makes sense, since the same amount of material spread over a larger area would have to mean that there’s less of it in any one spot, right?

Not so fast. Researchers led by Dr. Devesh Mistry of the University of Leeds invented a new synthetic material that gets thicker as it’s being stretched. The material, which is described in detail in a new paper published in Nature Communications, is one of few that exhibit “auxetic” properties, which means they expand instead of contracting when tugged on from different directions.

China wants to know if plants will grow on the far side of the Moon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Much of the focus for NASA and many other space organizations around the world has been on Mars for a while now. Sending a crewed mission to Mars, even if it just orbits the planet and then flies back home, will be an amazing accomplishment for whatever group is the first to make it happen, but Earth’s Moon may still hold some incredible secrets worth exploring.

With that in mind, China is hoping that its Chang’e-4 mission will give scientists a better idea of the composition of the Moon itself, and maybe even reveal its potential for supporting life. The mission, which has many moving parts including a lander and a rover, will target the far side of the Moon for the first time ever.

‘Fortnite’ developer will challenge Steam with its own digital game store

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Steam isn’t the only digital PC game store, but it has long been the dominant player in the industry. Many developers have attempted to break the Steam stranglehold with their own proprietary offerings — Origin, Uplay, Battle.net — but those stores are typically limited to games from the developers that run them.

There simply aren’t any true competitors to Steam, but on Tuesday, a new platform was unveiled that will undoubtedly grab Steam developer Valve’s attention. In a blog post on its website, Fortnite developer Epic Games announced that it will soon launch its own online store for digital distribution, one which will feature its own games as well as a wide variety of games from other developers. And it has one hugely important advantage over Steam.

Google finally fixed some of the Pixel 3’s worst bugs

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When Google launched the Pixel 3 in October, it was generally well received. We gave it a positive review ourselves, but it was impossible to ignore the elephant in the room: Google’s new phones were fundamentally broken. It was not the notch or the design that was flawed, but the software and the way the phone worked. You can read about some of those issues here, but at long last, Google is releasing substantive fixes for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL.

On Monday, December 3rd, Google pushed out the December 2018 Android security update, which just so happens to address more than a dozen functionality issues affecting the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. If you’ve been frustrated with your Pixel up to this point, you should have an easier time with the phone once the update is applied.
