Comcast is about to increase its fees yet again for no good reason

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s an old story by now but one that almost never fails to get many consumers’ blood to rise. We’re referring to the inevitability of regular increases in consumer cable bills, and we have yet another example of how permanent a reality that’s become.

Starting January 1, Comcast is set to hike its “Broadcast TV” and “Regional Sports Network” fees again, with Cord Cutters News reporting last week that the newly raised broadcast TV fee will be about 10 bucks a month. The sports fee will be $8.25 a month, which the pair of increases coming after Comcast raised both last year to $8 from $6.50 for the broadcast TV fee and from $4.50 to $6.50 for the sports network fee.

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Making sure your pet’s food has adequate amounts of crucial vitamins is something every pet owner should pay attention to, but one dog food manufacturer has been forced to recall several brands of food after they were discovered to have far too much of on specific vitamin.

Sunshine Mills, which produces pet foods under the brand names of Evolve, Sportsman’s Pride, and Triumph, has issued a voluntary recall of several of its dry dog foods after it discovered that the food contained “elevated levels” of Vitamin D.

Police pull over a Model S on Autopilot and discover the driver is drunk and asleep

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Tesla’s Autopilot feature isn’t designed to whisk drivers to and fro while they’re sleeping, even though Elon Musk claims that that’s what the future of self-driving cars looks like. As it stands now, Tesla has enacted a number of security measures around its Autopilot feature to prevent abuse. Indeed, when the feature first launched a few year ago, there were quite a few outlandish videos highlighting people intent on pushing the feature to the limit. In one particularly wild clip, a man actually went and sat in the backseat of his Tesla while his car continued driving.

In a story that’s just as bizarre, a man in Los Altos, California was arrested late last week after he was found to be fast asleep — and drunk — in a Tesla Model S that was cruising along the highway at 70 MPH. While the incident makes for an amusing story at first, it’s something of a miracle that no one got hurt. On another note, the incident does speak to the increasing effectiveness of Tesla’s Autopilot feature.

Apple’s multi-device wireless charger is still vaporware, but Samsung’s is down to an all-time low

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Remember back in the day when rumors were flying that Apple was going to release its own HDTV with Siri integration as the key feature? Samsung rushed to add voice command support to its own TVs so it could beat Apple to the punch, but then the mythical “iTV” ended up just being a rumor. This time around the AirPower is real — or at least it was supposed to be — but Samsung beat it to market yet again with the Samsung Wireless Charger Duo. It only supports two devices at a time instead of three, but it actually exists instead of being vaporware so Samsung definitely has the advantage here. It normally sells for $120, but it’s all the way down to $49.99 on Amazon for today only!

Samsung Wireless Charger Duo, Fast Charge Stand & Pad, Universally Compatible with Qi Enabled P…: $49.99

Here are some more details from the product page:

  • Supports wireless charging on Qi compatible devices including the Samsung Galaxy S9, Samsung Galaxy Note9, Samsung Gear S3, Apple iPhone 8, Apple iPhone X, and more
  • Charge two phones at once. Pad charging also supports charging for Gear S3 or later Samsung smartwatches
  • Built in fan and ventilation to keep phone cool while fast charging
  • Qi Certified for tested and safe wireless charging
  • Includes Fast Charge wall charger and USB-C cable

Look for the Works with Nest badge and let Nest handle the rest.
  • THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE A NEST HOME: We love home. It’s the best place in the world. But not everything inside our homes is lovable. Some things beep at us; fail without warning; keep us in the dark. There are things we’ve learned to ignore. We think these things should do more. Nest is focused on making simple, human, delightful things. That’s how we’re creating the thoughtful home: A home that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it.

Chinese scientists who created gene-edited babies may now be missing

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The scientific community was rocked last week after a Chinese scientists named He Jiankui claimed to have successfully modified human embryos using the CRISPR tool. Two of those babies, He claimed, were already born, with more potentially on the way.

It was an unexpected revelation and it sent He’s peers in the genetics field scrambling to condemn his work. Genetic modification is something that the vast majority of scientists believe needs to be handled with extreme care, and calls for regulations on human genetic editing have been nearly universal among researchers. To say He was in hot water would be a massive understatement, and now reports out of China as to his whereabouts are mixed. Put simply, nobody will say where he is.
