Google is testing a way for Search to be your TV Guide for streaming apps

If you watch a lot of the content streamed by players like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and the like, at some point you can feel a little bereft when it comes to knowing what’s what, provided you’re not glued to Twitter or to news about each outlets’ offerings. When does your favorite new series premiere? What’s coming soon?

Back in the prehistoric era, when you were forced to watch whatever was being broadcast on a TV set at that exact moment, people used an ancient text called a TV Guide to know what was being shown when. Interestingly, Google is testing a new feature that would provide a kind of digital version of that same thing, so that users can know what content they can find on which streaming app.

Wisconsin woman’s dog sniffed out her owner’s cancer three separate times

Dogs have long been called “man’s best friend,” and you don’t have to search far for plenty of stories of canines helping out their human handlers in amazing ways. The latest, and perhaps most dramatic, evidence that dogs really do love humans comes from Madison, Wisconsin, where a Siberian husky alerted her owner of undiagnosed cancer not once, not twice, but three times.

Stephanie Herfel’s trusty pup Sierra began acting oddly one day, sniffing her and then running and hiding. Herfel told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that she had been experiencing pain and her dog’s strange behavior ultimately pushed her to go to her doctor. As it turned out, her dog had sniffed out ovarian cancer.

Amazon pretty much confirmed the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A few days ago, OnePlus posted a teaser on Twitter for an upcoming partnership with McLaren. Considering that we already have Porsche Design and Lamborghini flagship Android phones out there, we speculated at the time that a OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition might be unveiled on December 11th.

Days later, a rumor suggested that the phone would have 10GB of RAM, which would mark a new milestone for the company. Since then, Amazon India has posted a teaser that practically confirms the new OnePlus 6T — the McLaren edition — is coming to help OnePlus celebrate its fifth birthday.

Your local coffee shop may start streaming Apple Music soon

Ben Thompson, the tech analyst behind the influential and widely read Stratechery blog, published a kind of mea culpa a few days ago in which he pretty much did an about-face in regards to Apple Music. He says his earlier analysis of the service, as a means to an end for Apple, was “flat out wrong.”

If you don’t subscribe to his blog (which is paywalled), you can see some of the relevant comments here, but basically, Ben was pointing out that Apple’s move to bring its streaming music service to the Amazon Echo is a “stunning” decision that “quite explicitly favors one of Apple’s services (Apple Music) over one of Apple’s hardware lines (the HomePod).”

Yandex, the Google of Russia, is launching its first smartphone

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The search company known as the Google of Russia already does a lot of things to which you can make comparisons with similar services and product offerings from US tech giants. There’s search, a la Google. The company also has its hands in self-driving cars, smart speakers, an Amazon Prime-esque membership service — and now the company wants to get into smartphones. Which is the reason for today’s announcement introducing the … drumroll … Yandex Phone.

SpaceX broke multiple records with its launch of 64 satellites at once

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

SpaceX is already the leading name in the realm of private space flight with many firsts to its name, but the company’s most recent launch landed it in the record books multiple times over. The mission, which was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, delivered a whopping 64 tiny satellites into orbit, which is the most in a single mission in the history of U.S. spaceflight.

On top of that, the mission was performed using one of SpaceX’s used (sorry, “flight proven”) rockets, and its subsequent landing made it the first rocket to be launched and landed three times. It’s not done, however, as it will head back into SpaceX’s refurbishing program to be used again.

Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ series may be getting secret help from Peter Jackson

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s widely known at this point that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos gave a directive to the team leading the development and commissioning of the company’s TV productions to focus on projects that have the potential to become a cultural force — a blockbuster in the vein of something like HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Our vote for the Amazon production that might come closest to fitting that bill is the Lord of the Rings adaptation it’s reportedly spending a billion dollars on. We told you a little over a month ago the series is rumored to have a focus of some kind on the character of a young Aragorn. Even more intriguingly, there’s also been speculation that Amazon would love to have input from Peter Jackson, the movie franchise’s celebrated director.

Waymo’s self-driving taxi service is now a reality

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We always expected Google to turn its self-driving car technology developed under Waymo into a self-driving taxi service of sorts, and Google finally delivered the service we’ve been waiting for. However, Waymo launched Waymo One without making a big deal over the event. Furthermore, the driverless taxi service is very limited, servicing interested users in just four Phoenix suburbs: Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert.

That’s a service area of roughly 100 miles, Reuters explains. The cars may be able to drive themselves, but they’re not exactly driverless, because a person will always be sitting behind the wheel, ready to take over if something goes wrong. To use Waymo One, you’ll need to register via an app, just like you do with Uber and Lyft.

Mark Zuckerberg’s response to leaked Facebook emails: We’re actually the good guys

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Facebook’s brutal year of one bad news cycle after another has continued pretty much interrupted, with today offering the latest bit of fuel for the fire. Reporters have been combing through a previously sealed trove of internal emails released by the UK Parliament which has turned up scores of juicy tidbits.

For example: Mark Zuckerberg personally approved cutting off Vine from being able to use Facebook to help users find their friends; the seemingly cavalier attitude internally around Android call-scraping that landed Facebook in hot water; and naïveté early on about various Facebook-related risks. In one email from 2012, Zuckerberg talks about being generally skeptical “that there is as much data leak strategic risk as you think.”

OnePlus confirms it will launch a 5G phone with a Snapdragon 855 in early 2019

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The anticipation for 5G smartphones has been rising at an exponential rate in recent weeks as providers, including the likes of Verizon and AT&T, have declared that their first 5G offerings will launch next year.

We still don’t know much about those 5G phones, other than that Samsung will apparently be building many of them, but OnePlus stole some of their thunder on Wednesday by announcing at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 that it will launch the first 5G flagship phone in Europe early next year on the EE network.
