Apple disables Group FaceTime as it races to fix a serious bug affecting FaceTime calls

Major tech leaders like Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian started warning their Twitter followers late Monday to disable FaceTime on their Apple devices in light of a major software bug that Apple has acknowledged.

As explained by 9to5Mac, the bug is pretty bad. It lets you initiate a call to anyone via FaceTime and to immediately start hearing audio from the other person you’re calling before they’ve either accepted or rejected the call. As if you’re just — turning on a microphone at will in the room of almost anyone you’d want to listen to. Apple actually disabled the Group FaceTime capability on Monday as it works on a fix, which the iPhone maker says is coming later this week via a software update.

NASA may be on the edge of its seat as it waits to see if its aging Opportunity rover will wake back up from its extended downtime, but it’s not the only piece of scientific hardware on the Red Planet. The trusty Curiosity rover is still going strong, and after spending over a year at its current location on the Vera Rubin Ridge, it’s ready to move on.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced Curiosity’s move today and showed off a fancy selfie the rover snapped before it began its journey. The rover will now travel south towards a new area of the large geographical feature known as Mount Sharp.

Samsung finally launched phones with notches, but didn’t copy Apple’s design

%name Samsung finally launched phones with notches, but didn’t copy Apple’s design by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We were assaulted with phones with notches for most of 2018, as every smartphone maker that matters (aside from Samsung) copied Apple’s design. Some people mistakenly believe that phones like the first Essential handset an unpopular Sharp phone that brought notches to prominence. But there’s no question that, without Apple, we wouldn’t have had this explosion of notch handsets from all sorts of Android vendors.

In the second half of 2018, we did see plenty of no-notch, all-screen alternatives, proving that some device makers do want to differentiate themselves from Apple, as well as new notch designs that looked nothing like the iPhone X. And, soon enough, we’ll see Samsung’s true answer to the iPhone X/XS design: The Galaxy S10 with its Infinity-O screen. But until that happens, we’ll have to settle for Samsung’s first phones with notches, which look a lot more like OnePlus 6T alternatives than iPhone XS rivals.

Nintendo hasn’t given up on 3D gaming, and may even bring it to the Switch

After the release of the Nintendo 3DS way back in 2011, Nintendo eventually decided to deep-six the signature 3D feature in a later release and manufactured a plain ol’ 2DS system for those fans who didn’t want the extra immersive quality. But just because the company backtracked slightly, that doesn’t mean Nintendo threw in the towel completely on 3D gaming. On the contrary — a new patent reveals the company has been looking at a new way of bringing this feature to TVs, presumably for inclusion with the Nintendo Switch.

New concept video shows us the iPhone 11 we wish Apple would make

%name New concept video shows us the iPhone 11 we wish Apple would make by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With 2019 in full swing, we’ve already started to see a number of iPhone 11 renders emerge from the rumor mill. The renders we’ve seen thus far all feature distinctive designs, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given that Apple is reportedly still working with a number of iPhone 11 prototypes at this point.

This early into the year, it’s a safe bet that the iPhone designs we’ve seen thus far are still in the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) phase, which essentially means that the company is still finalizing the overall design and feature-set of its next-gen iPhone lineup.

‘Bug bombs’ make life worse for you, not roaches

%name ‘Bug bombs’ make life worse for you, not roaches by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Discovering your home or apartment has a roach problem may be enough to make you want to take some seriously drastic measures. Nobody likes seeing bugs taking over their living space, and foggers — or “bug bombs” if you prefer — are a popular choice for clearing pests out of a home.

However, a new study suggests that these chemical cocktails aren’t all that effective against roaches. In fact, bug bombs might be causing more problems for humans in a home than the cockroach invaders they’re trying to get rid of, and the risks the chemicals pose don’t seem to be worth it.

Intel has an excellent idea for a foldable Surface Phone

You may expect Intel to invent and produce various internal components to power the foldable smartphones and laptops of the near future, but the chipmaker isn’t known for launching its own hardware. That didn’t stop the company from coming up with a foldable smartphone of its own, which honestly doesn’t look too bad.

‘Metro Exodus’ is an Epic Games store exclusive, and Valve isn’t happy about it

%name ‘Metro Exodus’ is an Epic Games store exclusive, and Valve isn’t happy about it by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The digital content distribution wars heated up once again on Monday as Deep Silver and Epic Games teamed up to announce that Metro Exodus — the upcoming entry in the first-person shooter series — is going to be exclusive to the Epic Games store on PC. While this news on its own isn’t terribly interesting, the details surrounding this decision are, as Metro Exodus has been available to preorder on Steam for months. Those preorders will be honored, but Valve won’t take any additional preorders or sell the game when it launches on February 15th.

With its attractive revenue share for developers, the Epic Games store has already picked up a few exclusives, but the timing of this announcement — with the game’s release just days away — appears to have struck a nerve, as Valve went as far as to call the exclusivity deal “unfair” on the game’s store page.
