The Thunder Purple OnePlus 6T is probably my favorite Android phone of 2018

I had very high hopes when I took delivery of my Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL review units, and at first it seemed like they delivered. While neither model features a truly modern “all-screen” design, the Pixel 3 XL at least came closer than any other Pixel phone that came before it. The design of the XL model was otherwise gorgeous though, and the true appeal of Pixel phones is always software. Google’s “pure” Android experience is unencumbered by vendor UI layers and unnecessary or unwanted apps. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are fast and powerful, and they’re a pleasure to use for the most part. Unfortunately, a wave of bugs and other issues caused a bunch of headaches for early adopters, and users are still waiting for fixes to most of the Pixel 3’s problems. Long story short, the Pixel 3 has been a disappointment so far.

Thankfully, the Android market is nothing like the iPhone market so users have plenty of other options to choose from. And if you ask me, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL wouldn’t even be the best Android phones of the year even if they launched without a single bug. That designation goes to the newly launched OnePlus 6T, and it just went on sale today in a stunning new color that’s unlike anything else out there in the US right now.

It’s finally here: This is the ugliest smartphone in the history of smartphones

%name It’s finally here: This is the ugliest smartphone in the history of smartphones by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If there’s one thing Android users love, it’s the notch. That’s why diehard Android fans were so excited when just about every smartphone maker on the planet decided to copy Apple’s iPhone X design earlier this year.

Just in case it wasn’t clear, we’re being sarcastic and hardcore Android fans have historically hated the notch. Apple wasn’t the first smartphone maker to cut a notch out of its display, of course, but it was the first to use the notch design seen on the iPhone X. And of course that’s the design every Android phone company decided to copy, for obvious reasons — if Apple does something, they have to do it too. The worst part is they copied the design for no practical reason. Apple only needs such a large notch because of all the components in the TrueDepth camera system. Android phones don’t have complex 3D face scanning features, so all along they could have been using a much better and smaller notch design like the one on the OnePlus 6T. But hey, then they wouldn’t be copying Apple!

Of course, some companies aren’t content with just copying Apple, and on Thursday Sharp decided to turn things up a notch. Sadly, pun intended.

The Pixel 3 camera mode you’ve been waiting for is finally rolling out to all Pixels

%name The Pixel 3 camera mode you’ve been waiting for is finally rolling out to all Pixels by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When it unveiled the Pixel 3 phones about a month ago, Google dedicated a whole segment of the presentation to the camera experience. That was entirely expected, considering that previous Pixel cameras received many praises. Google even took some shots at the competition when introducing a new low-light camera mode called Night Sight, showing image samples that showed how much better the Pixel 3 is compared to the iPhone. The problem with the feature was that Google needed more time to have it ready for buyers, so the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL shipped without Night Sight support. However, all that changes right now, as Google issued an update for the Pixel phones that enables the feature.

Early Instagram employee: The app is like ‘a drug that doesn’t get us high anymore’

%name Early Instagram employee: The app is like ‘a drug that doesn’t get us high anymore’ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The day after she learned that Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger were abruptly leaving the company, Bailey Richardson decided the time had come.

Like almost 70 percent of Americans who’ve ever ditched or taken a break from social media (according to Pew Research Center data) she’d become disillusioned with Instagram — the posing, the status seeking, and her own general lack of feeling good when using it. Writing to her 20,000 followers on the service in one final post, she noted simply that the time had come to say goodbye, and “Thanks for all the kindnesses over the years.”

Astronomers may have just spotted a ‘super Earth,’ and it’s not far away

%name Astronomers may have just spotted a ‘super Earth,’ and it’s not far away by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Lately, a lot of the exoplanets discovered by astronomers have been incredibly far away. Spotting planets at a huge distance is still important, and every new planet researchers are able to detect adds to our knowledge of the universe and nature itself, but most of them are so distant that we’ll likely never actually visit them.

A recent almost-discovery of so-called “super Earth” could change that. Astronomers have spotted what they believe is evidence of a massive, rocky world over three times the size of Earth, but the most exciting thing about it is that it’s only around six light years away.

Global smart speaker shipments hit an all-time high, with Amazon in the lead

%name Global smart speaker shipments hit an all time high, with Amazon in the lead by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The US saw a bit of a cool down in the third quarter when it comes to the shipment of smart speakers like Amazon’s popular Alexa-powered devices. But new data out from Strategy Analytics tells a different story — or, rather, adds another dimension to the smart speaker market picture. Outside the US, smart speaker shipments are actually red-hot at the moment. Indeed, global shipments hit a record high in the third quarter, putting the market on track to top 100 million units in use by the end of this year.
