The smartphone handset device business has of course been dominated by two names for years now, but a Chinese device maker most American consumers probably haven’t heard of is nevertheless suiting up to eventually topple Samsung on its way to becoming the number 1 global smartphone player. That’s the plan, at any rate, which Huawei has set out for itself, after already overtaking Apple earlier this year to become the second-largest smartphone player as ranked by global market share. And now, the CEO of Huawei’s consumer division Richard Yu has told CNBC in a new interview that the company’s timetable is to get almost even next year with Samsung, which has been suffering a decline in handset shipments, and then to overtake Samsung in 2020.

More than two years ago, an Apple enthusiast who goes by @heyeased on Twitter made an iPhone wallpaper that would end up becoming one of the biggest crazes of the year. The wallpaper in question was called “magic black,” and it took advantage of a glitch in iOS to make the backgrounds of folders and the dock completely disappear. The result was the most stealth home screen look anyone had ever seen on an iPhone, and you can see how awesome it looked right here. It just so happened to be the year that Apple introduced its new Jet Black finish on the iPhone 7, in part to help bolster sales since it was reusing a nearly identical iPhone design for the third consecutive year. The combination of the Jet Black finish and this magic black wallpaper resulted in a sleek look that people absolutely adored.

Then after a while, Apple fixed the glitch that enabled the magic black wallpaper. People were upset for a while, but it’s obviously not a terribly big deal in the grand scheme of things. The nifty wallpaper faded from memory and @heyeased continued making other kinds of wallpapers for iPhone users to enjoy. So why are we bringing this up now? Well, we have good news and bad news…

True, long-distance, wireless charging is the next big thing that we expect from device makers, something that will forever fix battery life worries. Samsung is supposed to launch three Galaxy S10-branded phones early next year, and at least two of them are now expected to feature a design that’s not available on any other phone. Samsung teased the all-screen notchless display a few days before unveiling several types of Infinity display screens, including the foldable version, at SDC18 last week. Before and after the event, a slew of reports kept saying that the premium Galaxy S10 phones will feature a screen that will occupy almost the entire surface of the front side, save for a circular hole at the top, where the camera would reside.
