Cleveland cops use NASA’s Mars landing to make a point about winter drivers

As someone who lives in a state known for bad winters I can totally sympathize with Cleveland residents that have to deal with nasty winter weather. The Cleveland police, on the other hand, are clearly happy to poke some fun at their city’s commuters and used NASA’s recent Mars InSight landing as an opportunity to have a little fun at the expense of anyone on the city’s snow-covered roadways.

A tweet from the official Cleveland Police account on Twitter, in which the cops roast winter drivers by noting that NASA sent a spacecraft hundreds of millions of miles with utter precision, is cop humor at its finest.

Nintendo Switch dominated Black Friday with record-breaking sales

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When the Nintendo Switch launched in 2017, it looked like it would be a runaway success. Flanked by new entries in the Mario, Zelda, and Splatoon franchises, the Switch was already an improvement over the Wii U by the end of the year. All Nintendo had to do was continue to court third-party developers while maintaining a steady stream of first-party content in the years to come. Unfortunately, game releases slowed to a crawl in 2018.

You might think that would affect Switch sales this holiday season. Sure, Nintendo fans are looking forward to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in December, but would the Switch, still priced at $300, really be able to compete with $200 PS4 and Xbox One bundles? Well, according to the latest data, the answer is a resounding yes.

Russian hackers are still trying to find weak spots in the US power grid

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Well, here’s some electrifying news. At a forum for cyber researchers in Washington DC today, representatives of threat intelligence firm FireEye made clear that the US power grid, while strong and well-defended, is nevertheless the subject of continued, ongoing probes from Russian hackers. FireEye analyst Alex Orleans put it this way, in comments reported by Wired: “There’s still a concentrated Russian cyber espionage campaign targeting the bulk of the US electrical grid. The grid is still getting hit.”

YouTube and Facebook are learning it’s not so easy to make shows people want to watch

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As soon as Netflix hit it big with House of Cards, and Amazon followed suit with a breakout hit, Transparent, one tech giant after another started seeing dollar signs. Yahoo tried, and other legacy platforms like Facebook and YouTube likewise wanted a bite at the apple — the apple being the engagement and user stickiness that comes when you have a slate of original shows and programming that people want to watch.

When you do have that, users stick around on your platform longer, or at least that’s the idea. So executives started handing out checks, and the great content race began, until, one by one, companies started finding out that you can spend the money, but the hits don’t automatically follow.

High-tech search company claims to have discovered Atlantis

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If there’s one archaeological find that would turn the world on its head it would be the discovery of the lost city of Atlantis. Many have looked for the remains of the mythical locale, but nobody has come close to actually finding it, and researchers claiming to have found it in the past have all ultimately been proven wrong.

Now, with a suite of high-tech hardware at its disposal, a company called Merlin Burrows believes it might have finally pinpointed the location where the city once stood. Needless to say, you should take everything you read from this point on with a huge grain of salt.

The new Google Maps design just got one final tweak

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google has just made a small but significant change to one of its best mobile apps, Google Maps. The company has been tweaking the design of Google Maps for a few months now, making various changes that would bring the popular navigation app in line with its newest Material Design guidelines. What Google didn’t change until now, however, was the side menu in the app. But you’ll soon see an updated menu inside the Google Maps app, because Google has now updated it to fit with the rest of the app’s design.

AT&T envisions a future of caretaker robots, smarter homes and interactive movies

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When you think how far the world has come technologically-speaking since 1993 — well, it’s breathtaking, to say the least. Think about everything from how powerful smartphones are now to what today’s Internet connectivity enables, as well as streaming content and other digital conveniences obliterating the need for physical media, bricks-and-mortar and so much more. Back in ’93, AT&T ran an ad campaign called “You Will” that, oddly enough, laid out a series of forecasts about technology advances the world could expect to see — and the company actually got many things right! From being able to make video calls to using GPS navigation in your car, they were forecasts that include many things we don’t even think about as amazing or big discoveries, really, anymore.

A woman spent three months in jail after police confused her bag of cotton candy with meth

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In late 2016, a Georgia woman named Dasha Fincher was arrested during what appeared to be a routine traffic stop in Monroe County. Upon searching the vehicle, police officers noticed a fluffy and blue “crystal like” substance that aroused their suspicion. Though Fincher claimed that it was just a bag of cotton candy, a field drug test at the time revealed that it was actually meth and MDMA. Consequently, Dasha Fincher was arrested for possession of an illegal substance and also charged with intent to distribute.

What initially seemed like a standard traffic stop and drug bust was anything but. Fincher — who couldn’t afford the $1 million bail — went on to serve three months in jail before more rigorous testing could be done. As it turns out, proper testing revealed that the substance was in fact cotton candy. Now, Fincher is suing both Monroe County and the arresting officers. Even more jarring is that Fincher remained in prison for 2 weeks after it was confirmed the substance in the car was not any type of illicit drug.

Now that the launch timing of Game of Thrones season 8 has been set, we know that we’re only six or seven months away from the end of the long-running TV series. We’re finally going to see the story all the way to its conclusion, but believe it or not, it won’t be the last time we’ll see the entire cast together on screen.

HBO on Wednesday confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that a rumored reunion special was indeed shot in Belfast, Ireland with the cast of the show before production wrapped. Conan O’Brien served as the host of the special, which features Sean Bean and other actors who have long since left the series.

Sorry, haters: Apple says the iPhone XR is the company’s top-selling iPhone model

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There’s a good reason why Apple executives over the past few years have warned us not to pay attention to mysterious supply chain rumors regarding iPhone production cuts: they’re often dead-wrong. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a number of reports claiming that iPhone XR sales have been underwhelming. In fact, many of these reports have relayed that iPhone XR demand is so low that Apple was recently forced to scale back production.

In the process, investors have become quite bearish on Apple shares, not to mention the future prospects of the company. In just a matter of a few weeks, Apple’s stock price went from trading at around $231 a share all the way down to about $172 a share. But as it turns out, it appears that all of the doom and gloom stories surrounding Apple’s fall from grace have been way off the mark. Of course, for anyone who has followed Apple over the years can attest, this scenario seems to play out consistently each and every single year.
