New 360-degree video shows us exactly what Tesla’s Autopilot ‘sees’ in real time

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the more ironic things about all of the negativity that sometimes shrouds Tesla is that much of it stems from Elon Musk simply making bold promises that Tesla can’t keep. We saw this play out quite publicly over the past few months with respect to the Model 3. You might recall Musk last year boldly proclaiming that Model 3 production would reach 5,000 units per week in December of 2017, a threshold the company would only meet many months later.

In a similar vein, we’ve seen equally ambitious claims from Musk regarding Tesla’s Autopilot feature. Specifically, Musk a few years ago boasted that a Tesla in 2017 would be able to drive itself from Los Angeles to New York City with absolutely zero driver interaction. That feat, of course, has yet to be achieved and there’s no telling if Tesla will even attempt it anytime soon. The sad thing is that Musk’s overly optimistic promises can often overshadow some of the impressive work Tesla is actually getting done, especially in the realm of the company’s Autopilot feature.

Amazon’s secret Sonos sale is still on, and still better than Sonos’ official Black Friday deals

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Sonos’ Black Friday 2018 and Cyber Monday 2018 sales were just okay this year. While the company typically offers discounts across most of its product line, there were only three Sonos speakers this time around that got official discounts: The Sonos One, Sonos Beam, and Sonos SUB. Meh.

Luckily, Amazon was running a secret sale the whole time that gave Sonos lovers two more, potentially better options to choose from. The first was a two-speaker Sonos Play:1 bundle for $298 that included a free $30 Amazon gift card. That effectively drops the price to $268 for a pair of the best wireless speakers on the planet, and that’s a whopping $81 less than the cost of a single Apple HomePod speaker! On top of that deal, Amazon was also offering a Sonos Playbar for $699 with a free OEM Sonos wall mount and a $50 Amazon gift card, which was the best (only?) deal on the internet for Sonos’ beloved Playbar.

Well guess what, Sonos fans: if you thought you missed those deals amid the Black Friday and Cyber Monday chaos, you’d be wrong because they’re both still available now. What are you waiting for!?

Two Room Set with Sonos Play:1 + $30 Amazon Gift card

  • Works with Alexa for voice control (Alexa device sold separately)
  • Fill two separate rooms with different music, or link them together to hear the same song in both. Great surround speakers for your Sonos home theater, too
  • Versatile, compact fit. Place them wherever you want and enjoy rich, room-filling sound
  • Streams all your favorite music services like Amazon Music Unlimited, Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music and more
  • Easy 10-minute wi-fi set up. No Bluetooth pairing problems or interruptions
  • Connects wirelessly to Sonos speakers in other rooms so you can expand your Home Sound System when you’re ready

Two Room Set with Sonos Play:1 + $30 Amazon Gift card: $298.00

Sonos Playbar TV Soundbar with Sonos Wall Mount Kit + $50 Amazon Gift card

  • Playbar complements HD television screens with crisp and powerful sound from nine amplified speaker drivers. Wirelessly streams all your favorite music services too.
  • Playbar syncs wirelessly with other Sonos speakers so you can listen to TV or music in perfect sync, throughout your home.
  • Playbar has simple two-cord setup. One for power and one for the TV. Control from your existing TV remote, or wirelessly connect on the Sonos app from your smart device.
  • Wall Mount makes Playbar easy to install to any wall with pegs in precisely the right place.
  • Wall Mount allows for placement horizontally above or below your TV
  • Add even more Sonos speakers to experience wireless audio throughout your home.

Sonos Playbar TV Soundbar with Sonos Wall Mount Kit + $50 Amazon Giftcard: $699.00

The hypocrisy surrounding Apple never ends

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When it comes to Apple, up is down and down is up. For some time now, analysts and tech pundits have demonstrated an uncanny ability to view encouraging news about the company through a pessimistic lens. What’s more, it remains mind-boggling that these same people — who are tasked with keeping a closer eye on Apple than anyone else — continuously glance over important metrics while issuing reports that lack even a semblance of nuance or relevant context. Nowhere was this dynamic more apparent than in the investor backlash Apple received after recently announcing it would no longer release quarterly unit sales for the iPhone, the Mac, and the iPad.

Many analysts quickly proclaimed that Apple had something to hide with respect to iPhone sales, never mind the fact that Apple’s strategy here is no different from any number of competitors who keep such information confidential. Still, many viewed Apple’s decision as a sign that the company is unsure about the future success of its iconic smartphone. After all, the reasoning went, if Apple was confident iPhone sales were poised to increase, wouldn’t it make those figures public? The question, however, is itself misleading and completely glances over the fact that Apple has been doing exactly what analysts and industry observers have been demanding for years: preparing for a world without huge iPhone refresh cycles.

I’m even more obsessed than I thought with the hidden second screen on this new phone

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When it comes to smartphone design trends, 2018 was all about copying the notched display design the Apple used on last year’s iPhone X. Apple wasn’t the first company to slice a notch out of the top of its screen, but the iPhone X’s notch was unlike either of the two that came before it. Needless to say, this is the design that dozens of Android phone makers decided to copy. Now that 2018 is winding down and we’re heading into 2019, however, things are changing. The focus among phone makers is moving away from copying Apple and toward trying to get even closer to true all-screen smartphone designs.

Phone vendors plan to use all sorts of interesting new designs in an effort to get the bezels around their smartphone screens as narrow as possible. We’ve already seen things like selfie cameras that pop up from the top edge of a phone, but that solution is frankly ridiculous. A motorized selfie camera is just asking to break, especially when you can’t put a protective case on the phone or it will stop the camera from opening. But now there’s another smartphone vendor that has come up with a new solution, and I’m even more obsessed than I thought with it.

Yes, Android Q is already in the works at Google, but the company is also developing the operating system that’s supposed to replace Android at some point this year. Called Fuchsia, although that may not be its final name when it launches, the OS that would work on smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other smart devices, was featured in various reports so far. More recently, we learned that Huawei is involved in testing Fuchsia, a sign that suggests development is moving along nicely. A different report that further confirms Google is serious about the new OS says that Fuchsia was available on display at a special Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) event recently.

Sprint on Wednesday announced that it’s working with HTC to make a “powerful 5G mobile smart hub” that will launch at some point in the first half of 2019. But from the get-go, the carrier’s press release tells us there’s not much it can share about said gadget: “the device name, feature specifications, and timing will be shared at a later date,” which makes this 5G mobile hotspot gadget sound like vaporware.

Man cited for distracted driving says ‘phone’ cop saw was actually a McDonald’s hash brown

If you’re behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, you should always be doing your best to pay attention to what’s going on, and that means fiddling with your phone is a no-go. Plenty of states have strict laws against distracted driving, but one Connecticut man says that local police took things a bit too far.

Jason Stiber of Westport, Connecticut, was pulled over by police after an officer spotted him talking on his cell phone while driving. Stiber is fighting the charge and says he has a very good explanation for how events unfolded: The “phone” Stiber says the officer saw was actually a McDonald’s hash brown.

Consumer groups want EU to go after Google for tracking users with their phones

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A report a few weeks ago revealed what some Google users already knew: That disabling Location History doesn’t mean Google will not record your location with the help of certain mobile apps, especially the ones that need your location to work correctly, like Google Maps and Search.

There is a way to stop location tracking for good, but it’s not obvious to the user. In order to do so, you have to pause Web & Activity tracking to prevent Google from storing your location. Because of that, Google may face a new investigation in Europe, where consumer groups want regulators to look into the matter.
