Outdoor adventurers in the United States have plenty of tick problems of their own, and anyone who ventures into the woods in many areas of the country needs to be on the lookout for the tiny parasites and make sure none have latched on. Now, a new invasive tick species is getting a foothold in the country, posing a danger to humans and animals.

The ticks are a nuisance in their native Asia where they have been blamed for spreading disease to humans as well as affecting livestock. As the Washington Post reports, the ticks are capable of carrying many diseases and drink enough blood to affect the output of dairy cattle production by up to 25 percent.

Fans of Netflix’s hit 80s-themed horror-drama Stranger Things won’t have to wait too much longer to rejoin the story of its young heroes and learn what fresh new big bads from the Upside Down await.

In an interview he gave to De Telegraaf at the recent Heroes Dutch Comic Con in the Netherlands, the actor who plays Dustin on the show teased the upcoming third season (which will arrive this coming summer) by describing it as “scarier, it’s darker, it’s funnier,” with familiar evil from the Upside Down returning. “But there’s also a completely new form of antagonization towards our heroes.”

Perhaps the most intriguing thing to come out of that interview, though, is actor Gaten Matarazzo dropping some hints related to how long the series will continue.

Google Assistant will now reward you for having good manners

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google is bringing an update to its Assistant that includes a number of new holiday-themed features, as well as some new abilities for the company’s helpful digital assistant that are meant to keep us from turning into manner-less boors belting out orders to our gadgets. Like, “Hey, Google — play this! Do that!”

In all seriousness, various people and tech sites have raised legitimate questions about what our children are learning by the way gadgets increasingly encourage us to just bark a command and wait for it to be carried out. In light of that, the new update for Google Assistant includes, among other things, more cheerful responses to reward you when you have good manners — specifically, when you say things like please and thank you.

Oppo has a clever idea for eliminating the notch without removing functionality

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Almost all Android device makers other than Samsung copied the iPhone X’s notch this year, while simultaneously looking for ways to create all-screen phones without notches. We’ve seen slider phones appear where the selfie cam can pop out whenever it’s needed, and we’ve seen phones with a single camera module placed on the back of the phone, alongside a secondary display that you’d use for taking selfies and making video calls.

Samsung has recently unveiled the Infinity-O screen that we’ll see on the Galaxy S10 next year. The Korean Android vendor also unveiled its first-ever foldable phone, which is one other way to increase the size of a smartphone’s screen without using a notch.

The leaked Vivo Nex 2 demonstrates how a true all-screen phone can exist

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Remember the Nubia X that we’ve shown you a couple of times already? It’s a phone that features not one, but two distinct displays, including the main screen that takes up the entire surface of the front area, and a secondary one on the back that’s smaller, with the express purpose of letting you take selfies.

This is another way of creating all-screen phones without compromising on notches like the iPhone X, camera holes like the Galaxy S10, or sliding mechanisms like other Android devices out of China. And the Vivo Nex 2 in the image above suggests such designs are here to stay. Vivo, by the way, also made phones with slide-out cameras, like the Nex S that preceded the Nex 2.
