Google I/O 2019 is now underway, and the show this year opened the same way it does every year. CEO Sundar Pichai and other Google executives took the stage to deliver a keynote presentation that sets the tone for Google’s ecosystem in the year to come. This year, the focus was clearly once again on artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and machine learning, with Google Assistant now finding itself at the center of Google’s most exciting experiments. Decidedly less exciting were all of the new Android Q features that the company showed off on Tuesday. Of course, the fact that Android Q is a bit boring shouldn’t really be a big deal to anyone for the time being, even for people who use Android smartphones and tablets. Why? Because for the vast majority of people out there, it will still be years before Android Q actually makes it to any of their devices.

A report claimed in the weeks preceding I/O 2019 that Google would make the Android Q beta available to a large number of non-Pixel devices, which is great news to any Android user looking to test Google’s latest operating system as fast as possible. It all started last year when Google announced at the same event that a handful of Android handsets made by its partners would be able to run the Android P beta. And Google has indeed outdone itself. We’re looking at 21 Android devices, from entry-level to 2019 flagships, that can download Android Q beta 3 right now, and only six of those are Pixels. That leaves 15 phones made by various companies, but, sadly, none of them is the Galaxy S10.

From the moment Google stepped on stage at Samsung’s developer event in early November to talk about the work it’s done alongside Samsung on adapting Android for foldable screens it was clear: Google was working on foldable smartphones on its own. Fast-forward to May 7th, and Google made it clear that it wants Android to run smoothly on foldable devices, starting with Android Q. That was another indication that a foldable Pixel might be in the works. As I said before, everything that Google bakes into Android will find its way into a Pixel phone — remember’s last year notch support in Android P? It turns out that Google did confirm that it’s exploring foldable handsets, but there’s no point getting excited about a foldable Pixel handset just yet.

On the heels of the US government’s announced in March that the first US exascale computer is being built just outside Chicago and coming in 2021, the US government announced today that it’s also commissioned a manufacturer to build what would be the most powerful computer in the world that will also make its debut in 2021, keeping the US at the forefront of supercomputer supremacy.

The company building the new supercomputer, named Frontier, is Cray Inc., which will use high-performance AMD EPYC CPU and Radeon Instinct GPU technology in the system, and it will boast a performance greater than 1.5 exaflops.

We’re surrounded by plastics for much of our lives. Plastics are cheap and easy to make, they’re often incredibly durable, and they last just about forever. Unfortunately, those upsides are also terrible news for the environment, as plastic waste continues to pile up despite recycling efforts and public awareness campaigns.

One of the biggest problems with the popular material is that even recyclable plastics aren’t always able to be broken down and used again. In fact, less than one-third of recyclable plastic is repurposed after the recycling process, with the rest being tossed along with other non-recyclable waste or incinerated. A new research effort led by scientists at Berkeley Lab could provide a solution in the form of plastics that are designed from the ground-up to be fully recyclable.

Now that consumers are starting to get wise to the barrage of robocalls and the myriad spam calls that flood their phones on the daily, robocallers have increasingly found themselves less able to trick unsuspecting consumers into actually answering their phones and engaging with them. If Earth were ever to be threatened by a large space rock — and it definitely will at some point in the future — humanity is going to need to have a plan. Astronomers know this, which is why simulated exercises like the one that took place last week are so important, but actually testing possible defense strategies is something that still needs to happen.

In 2021, NASA will launch the DART spacecraft. DART, which stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test, is designed to slam directly into a space rock known as Didymos B, which is the smaller half of a binary asteroid, the other half of which is known as Didymos A. The results from the test could shape Earth’s planetary defense systems for decades to come.

Netflix is now streaming one of the biggest movies in the world

One of the top-grossing movies in the world right now is a sci-fi blockbuster that’s racked up an impressive global box office haul on par with some of Marvel’s big 2019 hits, like Captain Marvel. An achievement that’s seriously impressive when you stop to consider that this Chinese-made film in question, Wandering Earth, hasn’t really been available to US audiences at all up to this point, other than via very quick, limited screening. And yet, it’s currently the third highest-grossing film worldwide, even with the insane response to Avengers: Endgame.

It likely won’t be as under-the-radar among American audiences for much longer, however. Thanks to Netflix’s acquisition of the rights to the film back in February and its debut on the streamer with pretty much no fanfare in recent days, that means the biggest non-Marvel movie released in 2019 thus far is now available to stream in the US.
