During yesterday’s I/O developer conference, Google provided us with a lot more information about Android Q, the company’s next-gen version of Android. Though Google rolled out the first developer beta of Android Q a few months back, Google yesterday unveiled a slew of previously undisclosed features Android users can look forward to.

Without question, one of the more intriguing new features Google added to Android Q centers on a host of new gestures that make the entire user experience much more seamless and intuitive. While Android users will undoubtedly see the gestures as a step forward, it’s hard to ignore the fact that some of Android Q’s new gestures were seemingly lifted straight from the iPhone X.

For the first time, Google yesterday used its annual I/O developer event to introduce new smartphone hardware in the form of the Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL. The names don’t exactly roll off the tongue but the devices themselves are quite compelling. In a nutshell, Google’s new Pixel 3a line is designed to give users a premium smartphone experience at a more affordable price point. In many ways, the Pixel 3a is being positioned in a similar vein as the iPhone SE that Apple inexplicably and frustratingly discontinued last year.

Pricing on the Pixel 3a line is more than reasonable, with the Pixel 3a starting at $399 and the Pixel 3a XL starting at $479. And while some budget-oriented phones tend to skimp on the features, the Pixel 3a devices offer a whole lot of bang for the buck and may very well prove to be a sleeper hit for Google. The devices are already available for purchase via major carriers but there are some intriguing Pixel 3a deals to be had if you head on over to Best Buy.

According to Apple’s System Status page on its site, several of its major services are currently experiencing outages. The mobile App Store, Mac App Store, and iTunes Store are all affected, and Apple says that the issues arose at 4:40 ET this morning. That said, reports of the outages have only begun popping up recently, and the reports don’t appear to be widespread, leading us to believe this is a relatively contained outage.

If the outage is regional, it isn’t affecting the Northeast, as none of us here at BGR in New York or New Jersey have noticed any problems with any of Apple’s services today. The incredibly small number of reports on DownDetector make it difficult to determine exactly where the outages are affecting users.

The main I/O 2019 keynote was filled with announcements and demos, but it was pretty dull. Google unveiled Android Q’s main features as well as the mid-range Pixel 3a phone and the Nest hardware rebrand, and it explained the various innovations it’s packing into Google Assistant. The company also talked at length about machine learning and artificial intelligence, giving practical examples of what it all means. On top of all that, Google made clear to everyone in the audience that privacy is now a core focus at Google HQ. One other theme that was pretty clear during the conference was Google’s renewed focus on making technology accessible to everyone, and the related announcement from the keynote might be the most exciting stuff we saw at I/O 2019.
