A hidden world in the NES ‘Legend of Zelda’ was just uncovered 30 years later

One of the more remarkable things about the original Nintendo is that many of the console’s more popular games — from Super Mario Bros. 3 to Tecmo Bowl — are still playable and thoroughly enjoyable. Sure, the 8-bit graphics can’t hold a candle to what you’ll find on more modern-day consoles, but the wild success Nintendo saw with the NES Classic underscores just how much fun many of those older games are.

Of course, if we’re talking about some of the greatest NES games of all time, there’s no denying that the Legend of Zelda needs to be part of the discussion. The original Legend of Zelda — which was released all the way back in 1986 — was such an iconic hit that it would go on to spawn well more than a dozen offshoots across a number of different consoles.

Apple brings iTunes Movies and AirPlay 2 to Samsung’s 2019 TV lineup

As Apple continues to make a significant push into services, Samsung earlier today announced that their upcoming lineup of 2019 smart HDTVs will, for the first time, allow users to buy or rent movies and TV shows via iTunes. What’s more, upcoming Samsung models will also ship with support for AirPlay 2. It’s also worth noting that Samsung’s selection of 2018 smart HDTVs will offer similar support once a firmware update rolls out.

Naturally, iTunes access on Samsung TVs will be made available via an app and will also enable users to access their current library of iTunes content. Samsung notes that the app will be available to users across 100 different countries. And in a move that would have seemed downright implausible even a few days ago, users will even be able to search Apple’s iTunes library via Bixby, Samsung’s intelligent virtual assistant.

There aren’t many quiet weeks on Netflix any more, but this coming week falls into that category. By my count, there are only eight new shows and movies hitting the service this week, though seven of them are originals. On the bright side, some of that content looks pretty exciting, including the final movie in the intriguing Godzilla anime series, and the second season of the comedy Friends from College, starring Keegan-Michael Key.

The sole licensed movie this week is none other than Solo: A Star Wars Story (which might very well be the last Star Wars spin-off we see in theaters for a while). As one of many who decided to skip paying for a ticket to see this one on the big screen, I’ll probably check it out once it starts streaming on Wednesday.

Rare desert snowfall creates a surreal winter wonderland in Arizona

%name Rare desert snowfall creates a surreal winter wonderland in Arizona by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

You don’t normally think of the desert as having a proper “winter,” but parts of Arizona and New Mexico got more than a light dusting of snow to start the year. The result is sprawling desert vistas glazed in white, and it’s downright lovely.

Snow isn’t entirely out of the ordinary for states like Arizona and New Mexico at this time of year, but it’s certainly not something that happens regularly, and locals wasted no time capturing the surreal sights to share on Twitter and elsewhere.

Spammers bombarded mobile phones in the US with 48 million robocalls in 2018

%name Spammers bombarded mobile phones in the US with 48 million robocalls in 2018 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Preliminary year-end data is in on the explosive growth in robocalls to cell phones in the US, with more people than ever getting bombarded by calls from spammers and marketers who go to great lengths to trick you into answering their call.

Robocall management company YouMail has been tracking the volume of calls and says that 2018 saw 48 million of them harass cell phone owners in the US last year, up 60 percent from 2017. That’s a huge jump in these types of calls, and while there’s certainly more awareness of the problem now, so far it seems that nothing has really served to effectively put the brakes on this problem. Especially given how easy it is for robocallers to spoof a local number and trick you into answering by making you think you’re getting a legitimate call from your area instead of from a toll-free number you don’t recognize.

Ahead of CES, Apple puts up billboard touting iPhone security

%name Ahead of CES, Apple puts up billboard touting iPhone security by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With CES right around the corner, we’re just a few days away from being bombarded with all sorts of new and quirky tech gadgets that may or may not have any practical use. And while it’s undeniably true that CES isn’t as influential as it once was, many companies still opt to show off their latest and greatest technologies at the annual tech conference.

Apple, as in years past, won’t have a formal presence at CES. This of course shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given that Apple isn’t keen on sharing the stage or spotlight with anyone. That notwithstanding, Apple is using the media circus that is CES to tout the security benefits of the iPhone to conference-goers and anyone else who happens to be strolling around the Las Vegas strip area.

Stop worrying so much about how much time kids spend looking at screens

%name Stop worrying so much about how much time kids spend looking at screens by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

At this point, we’ve heard so many warnings about the supposed “toxic” effects of too much screen time on children that it almost feels like settled wisdom.

They say getting on social media too early is dangerous. Young minds are particularly impressionable and susceptible to the addictive nature of apps, mobile games and so much else that goes along with owning a smartphone. But now, new findings by British pediatricians basically tell us: Eh, stop worrying so much.

With Apple shares slumping, Trump says Apple should manufacture the iPhone in the US

%name With Apple shares slumping, Trump says Apple should manufacture the iPhone in the US by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With shares of Apple trading at a level we haven’t seen since 2017, Donald Trump at a press conference yesterday confidently said that Apple is “going to be fine.” Oddly enough, though perhaps not all that surprising, Trump also claimed that shares of Apple have gone up “hundreds of percent” since he became president.

When asked if he was concerned about Apple shares slumping, Trump answered: “No, I’m not. I mean, look, they’ve gone up a lot. You know, they’ve gone up hundreds of percent since [I’ve become] president. Apple was at a number that was incredible, and they’re going to be fine.”
