In late November of last year, Chinese scientist He Jiankui revealed to the world that he had pursued a goal of genetically altering human embryos, succeeding in altering the genes of multiple babies which were then carried to term and born. It rocked the genetic science community and drew ire from many researchers around the world. Now, He may be facing a much stiffer penalty than public backlash.

As The Telegraph reports, his unexplained “disappearance” in December was actually the result of being placed in state custody. The scientist now spends his days under armed guard as the Chinese government decides how to proceed. Depending on how officials rule, one potential outcome may be execution.

Nintendo is already looking past the Switch – and might dump consoles entirely

With Nintendo set to continue bringing its intellectual property like a new Mario Kart game to smartphones at some point this year, it’s natural to wonder what the company is thinking at this point in terms of its long-range business model and plans. Its Switch console, by all accounts, has been a major success for the beloved gaming company since its release in 2017, but even that hasn’t been enough to quiet those voices that are constantly wondering and asking aloud when the supposedly inevitable shift away from consoles would finally take place.

In an interview with Nikkei, Nintendo’s new president Shuntaro Furukawa adds more fodder for people to chew on. The big takeaway from his interview: At Nintendo, “we aren’t really fixated on our consoles,” and depending on how much external circumstances change, the company would have no problem dumping home consoles entirely if it ever came to that.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk was in China today to help break ground on a brand new Gigafactory in Shanghai. The factory itself will manufacture cars exclusively for customers in China and will solely be used to manufacture entry level versions of the Model 3 and the Model Y, Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3 crossover.

If all goes according to plan, construction will move at a rapid clip and production at the new factory will begin later this year. And while it remains to be seen what the Gigafactory’s production numbers look like by the end of the year, the factory reportedly has a maximum production capacity of 500,000 units per year. That said, Musk indicated that high-volume production at the factory won’t begin until 2020.

Samsung follows Apple in forecasting a quarterly revenue decline, thanks in part to China

%name Samsung follows Apple in forecasting a quarterly revenue decline, thanks in part to China by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Today was supposed to be Samsung’s day to shine as part of CES 2019, with the South Korea-based tech giant offering up a slew of announcements and product unveilings. Even so, the company still had some bad news to share — news that definitely got overshadowed by the rest of what was on the docket for today. We’re talking about the company’s lowering of its fourth quarter earnings guidance today ahead of reporting results for the quarter later this month.

This would represent Samsung’s first quarterly operating loss in two years, thanks in part to an economic slowdown in China that’s drying up interest in Samsung’s handsets there. Samsung also blamed its lowered guidance on falling demand related to its memory chip business — which means, worryingly, the company is getting hit on multiple fronts simultaneously.

Capping off a long second day of announcements and product demos at CES 2019 is Sony, with what should be an entertaining press conference on Monday night. The last of the major companies to take the stage at this year’s CES, Sony will start its press conference at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET tonight.

Unlike LG and Samsung, Sony hasn’t shared any information about what it will show us during its press conference. There have been no data dumps like we saw on LG’s website last week, and not even the video preview gives us any hints about what Sony will focus on throughout its press event Monday night.

Apple’s next iPhones might introduce a much smaller notch

%name Apple’s next iPhones might introduce a much smaller notch by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Notch-related rumors surrounding new iPhones had already been rampant up to this point, with the chatter encompassing everything from the possibility that 2019’s iPhones would sport smaller notches and even the potential that Apple might soon give us completely notch-free phones.

An announcement today from a company believed to be one of Apple’s suppliers, meanwhile, is giving new life to the speculation, thanks to Australian company AMS’ unveiling of new sensor technology that Apple could use in future handsets to shrink the size of the notch in which the Face ID camera system is housed.

‘Game of Thrones’ is no longer the most torrented show

%name ‘Game of Thrones’ is no longer the most torrented show by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For a stretch of a few years, you couldn’t really talk about pirating TV shows without bringing up HBO’s Game of Thrones. Indeed, GoT has been the most torrented TV show for about six years now, and set a number of torrenting records in the process. Interestingly enough, Game of Thrones finally lost its crown in 2018. This, though, doesn’t necessarily signal a lack of interest in the show, but is likely due to the fact that, well, the last Game of Thrones episode aired all the way back in August of 2017.

So what dethroned GoT in 2018? According to TorrentFreak, the most torrented show of 2018 was The Walking Dead. This is a bit surprising given that ratings for the AMC show have gone down considerably over the past few years.

Now, it’s China’s turn to explore the Moon

%name Now, it’s China’s turn to explore the Moon by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA may have landed on the Moon decades ago, but that doesn’t mean we know all that much about our nearest celestial neighbor. We’re regularly learning new things as we stare at the lunar surface from Earth, and NASA and other space groups have sent various probes and orbiters to study it in greater detail than was possible.

Now, it’s China’s turn.

In a landing that lined up nicely with the new year, China’s Chang’e 4 touched down on the far side of the Moon and quickly deployed a rover that is now crawling along the surface. It’s the first time any country has accomplished such a feat on the Moon’s little-studied far side, and for China it’s a huge opportunity to contribute to space exploration as a whole.

The Galaxy S10 Lite will be just as powerful as the most expensive Galaxy S10 Plus

%name The Galaxy S10 Lite will be just as powerful as the most expensive Galaxy S10 Plus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung is rumored to launch five distinct Galaxy S10 versions this year, including three 4G and two 5G models. The LTE phones, including the Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy S10 edge, and Galaxy S10+, will be the first to launch, with Samsung set to unveil them in February. The 5G versions, meanwhile, will arrive later this year.

But Samsung will finally copy one of Apple’s great iPhone strategies. All these devices will have the same core specs, which means the Galaxy S10 Lite will be just as powerful as the more expensive models.
