Apple has come out swinging against reports that its iPhone 6 Plus bends too easily. The company on Thursday told CNBC that only nine customers so far have complained about the device being too flimsy and it defended its hardware engineering from criticisms that have come in this week. In addition to revealed that only nine customers have complained, the company also said that its “new iPhones feature steel/titanium inserts to reinforce stress locations and use the strongest glass in the industry.” While the company did not discount some reports of the iPhone 6 Plus bending in some situations, it also said that under “normal use” such bends are “extremely rare.” Furthermore, Apple says that both new iPhones “passed a series of tests meant to check the products’ strength and durability to withstand every day, real-life use.”

A few months ago, a serious security issue affecting millions of websites was discovered – Heartbleed – and subsequently patched by many of them, but it looks like that wasn’t the worst security scare for Internet users this year. CNET reports that a new security vulnerability has been found, the “Bash” or “Shellshock” bug, which could be even more serious than Heartbleed because it can affect a variety of Internet-connected devices, from computers to Internet-of-Things gadgets. And apparently, this huge flaw will not be easily fixed.

Apple really isn’t having a good week. Things started out well enough when Apple revealed on Monday morning that more than 10 million combined iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handset were sold during their debut weekend. Then came “Bendgate.” And iOS 8.0.1. And the revelation that Apple is entirely at fault for the huge nude celebrity photo leak. Piling on top of this growing list is a blog post from app developer Craig Hockenberry, who reveals a big and potentially frightening security issue in iOS 8 and earlier versions of Apple’s mobile software.

When you look at the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales figures, it’s hard to believe that the high-end smartphone business is drying up, but that’s exactly what Motorola President Rick Osterloh argued in an interview with Re/code earlier this month.

“The days of the $600-$700 smartphone are numbered,” Osterloh told Re/code. “People are realizing they don’t need to pay that much money.”

Some hailed Samsung’s new Galaxy Alpha smartphone as an “iPhone killer” ahead of its debut last month. Since Samsung’s smartphones had all been made out of somewhat flimsy feeling plastics prior to the Alpha’s unveiling, it was understandable that some fans would get overly enthusiastic about what, at the time, was rumored to be the first Samsung smartphone to feature a beautiful aluminum housing.

Of course, now that the phone has been made official, we know that it’s most certainly not an iPhone killer. Instead, it’s a two-year-old iPhone.

So far we’ve seen a bunch of videos of people bending the iPhone 6 Plus with their bare hands, but what happens when someone actually tries to give the device a “bend test” that’s somewhat scientific? The team at uBreakiFixCo decided to clamp the iPhone 6 Plus, the Galaxy Note 3 and the iPhone 5 into a 4 point bend fixture and then apply up to 100 pounds of force to each of the phones. The results, interestingly, were much the same as what Unbox Therapy found in its original video.
