Apple is not done facing tax-related inquiries, The Financial Times reports, as the European Union is investigating the company’s tax deal with Ireland. Preliminary findings apparently claim that Apple has benefited from illegal state aid after it reached certain special agreements with the Irish government that others companies based in the region — including Amazon, Facebook, PayPal and Twitter — do not enjoy.

Microsoft has been touting Cortana as a key reason for people to buy Windows Phones and by all accounts it’s an extremely impressive voice-enabled personal assistant — and now it looks like there’s one way it’s clearly ahead of Siri and Google Now. Nokia is touting a new series of products from connected home company INSTEON that promise to let you control key home appliances such as thermostats and Wi-Fi enabled cameras using voice commands issued through Cortana.

Apple has just seeded iOS 8.1 to developers. This makes one of the fastest iOS x.1 releases ever — normally the first beta is released a couple months after the new version of iOS ships. It could have to do with an much more aggressive software release schedule and the fact that Apple not only has the upcoming Apple Pay update, but most likely a software update for the company’s new iPads, and another one early next year to support Apple Watch. Apple was quick to release an updated version of its latest mobile operating system after the iOS 8.0.1 rollout proved disastrous, but it appears that the company is still quite a ways from ironing out all the bugs. Last week, security research Stefan Esser noted that QuickType was offering up his unique passwords as autocorrect suggestions, and now MacRumors forum users are reporting that the ‘Reset All Settings’ feature on iOS 8 is deleting iWork documents from the newly-implemented iCloud Drive service.

We don’t know if HTC is still even planning on releasing its hotly anticipated phablet at all, but if it ever does release we expect it will have killer specs. Android Headlines points us to a new report from Chinese website My Drivers that claims the so-called HTC One (M8) Max will feature a 5.5-inch 2K display, a Snapdragon 805 quad-core 2.7MHz processor, 3GB of RAM, a massive 3,000mAh battery, an 18-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization and Android L.

GoPro on Monday announced even better portable action cameras that video enthusiasts who like to record themselves in death-defying situations will certainly appreciate – and that’s particularly impressive because we have seen quite a few interesting GoPro videos shot with the older models.
