It goes without saying that the original iPhone blew away the tech world when it was first unveiled in 2007. However, the development of the device was such a secret that not even all of Apple’s hardware engineers were allowed to test out the finished product that ran iOS. The Next Web points out that Apple actually developed an ugly, dumbed-down version of iOS known as “Skankphone” software that Apple engineers used to test out the device’s hardware capabilities to prevent leaks of the final UI design. As you might expect, this decoy user interface looked absolutely hideous.

Apple has already announced record launch sales for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus — the company sold more than 10 million units in its first weekend — and it looks like iPhone 6 sales are still going strong, significantly outpacing previous iPhone launches. After looking at analytics data from Fiksu and Mixpanel, Forbes says that Apple may have already surpassed 21 million iPhone 6 sales, out of which roughly 4 million should be iPhone 6 Plus units, even though the two phones have been available in stores in certain markets for just up to two weeks (more than 20 countries received the iPhone 6 a week after the September 19th launch).

Samsung is getting closer and closer to launching a flagship phone with an aluminum unibody like the iPhone 6 and the HTC One (M8). The company launched the Galaxy Alpha earlier this fall, which was the first Samsung smartphone to feature a metal frame, and now the company is working on some mid-range handsets that use aluminum for their rear shells, not just the frames.

There was a lot of speculation leading up to the launch of the iPhone 6 about whether the device would have a sapphire display. That obviously never happened and one reason that’s been cited by some analysts has been that it simply would have been too costly to mass produce large displays made from sapphire. Now it looks like making sapphire displays is even costlier than we thought because Apple sapphire supplier GT Advanced Technologies has just announced that it’s filed for bankruptcy.
