Big cable companies are fighting to stall new tech that would improve cellular service

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google Fiber is hardly the only threat to ISP mainstays like Comcast and Time Warner Cable these days. There are three times as many wireless accounts as there are cable broadband accounts in the United States, and wireless growth is seen continuing at a much more rapid pace than land-based broadband growth. What’s more, usage patterns are continuing to shift toward mobile devices and away from traditional computers.

The nation’s top cable companies have spent quite a bit of money of late building out large Wi-Fi networks across the country, and they have spent even more money marketing their networks of Wi-Fi hotspots. Some ISPs are even launching their own Wi-Fi only mobile phone services. Why? Because mobile is the battleground of the future and ISPs need to do everything they can to keep customers connected while they’re on the go.

But a new technology is emerging that may threaten to weaken the quality of ISPs’ Wi-Fi networks while strengthening their competitors’ cellular services, and Big Cable has no plans to take things lying down.

Former GM and BMW executive warns Apple: Your car will be a ‘gigantic money pit’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Wall Street Journal yesterday reported that Apple is not only moving full steam ahead on its electric car initiative, but is actually taking measures to accelerate development. In addition to tripling the size of its automotive development team, the report claims that Apple has set an internal, and rather ambitious, ship date of 2019.

Of course, the notion of Apple entering the car business is not without its fair share of unanswered questions. Consequently, it’s become somewhat common to hear seasoned auto industry insiders express skepticism about Apple’s plans to enter an industry as foreign, challenging, and cutthroat as the auto industry.

Most recently, former GM and BMW executive Bob Lutz appeared on CNBC and completely dismantled the notion that Apple has even a fighting chance to make even the tiniest dent in the auto industry.

More genuine iPhone apps may still be infected with malware following massive App Store hack

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Cunning hackers from China managed to sneak malware into what’s generally thought of as an impenetrable target, Apple’s App Store. They created a custom version of the Xcode program developers use to create iPhone apps, thus injecting the malware payload right into the apps that Apple staff would later approve.

At least 85 legitimate iPhone apps were infected with malware this way (see this list), most of them targeting the Chinese and Asian markets, as that’s where the malicious version of Xcode was made available to developers. However, other security firms say that there may be hundreds or even thousands of genuine iOS apps that may have been targeted this way.

No one likes paying for cable, but the way the industry is currently situated, there’s no other way to (legally) have access to all the content you’re interested in. You might be able to get by on Netflix originals, Amazon exclusives and reruns on Hulu, but if you want to watch your favorite sports team or keep up with HBO’s Emmy-winning series, you need cable.

But that may not be the case 10 years from now.
