Here’s what NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft sees as it orbits Bennu asteroid
It’s only been about a week since NASA successfully inserted its OSIRIS-REx asteroid probe into orbit around the large space rock known as Bennu, after initially arriving in early December. The diamond-shaped object will quickly become one of the most closely-studied asteroids ever, but for now NASA wants to learn as much about Bennu’s surface as possible, and that means observing it from every angle.
In a new video animation that has been stitched together from numerous still shots we get one of our best looks yet at the asteroid. As the probe circles the rock, its powerful lens has captured Bennu from just about every angle, making for a neat little movie.

Tim Cook defends Apple, says product pipeline and ecosystem underappreciated by investors
It’s been an interesting few weeks for Apple, to say the least. In early October of 2018, the company was riding high. Interest in the iPhone XR release was mounting and Apple shares, as a result, were trading at an all-time high. Flash forward a few weeks and the narrative surrounding Apple seemingly did a 180 as reports of tepid iPhone XR demand began to emerge. And while it’s easy to dismiss any lone rumor from the supply chain, the sheer number of reports pointing to disappointing iPhone XR sales became too large to ignore.
About a week ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook penned a letter to investors and disclosed that Apple was revising its quarterly guidance for revenue by a few billion dollars on account of slower than expected iPhone XR sales. Apple shares, which were already down at this point, sunk even further and are now trading at levels not seen since mid-2017.

Russian church leader: Smartphones are laying groundwork for the Antichrist
Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, had to know which particular snippet from a recent interview he gave on state TV in the country would rocket around the web. Maybe he didn’t.
Nevertheless, the church leader went on a little bit of a rant about smartphones during his interview and blasted our fixation on these devices as heralding the arrival of something terrible. No, not gadget addiction. Not broken lives. Smartphones, he promised, are paving the way for the antichrist.

Verizon calls out AT&T’s shady 5G strategy in new full-page ad
Verizon earlier today took out full-page ads in papers like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and called upon the wireless industry to be upfront with consumers about which devices are truly 5G compatible. The Verizon ad is essentially a not-too-subtle jab at AT&T which, as we reported a few weeks back, is planning to replace the LTE indicator with a 5G E symbol in markets that have support for the fastest LTE technologies. And keep in mind, AT&T doesn’t sell any 5G compatible phones at the moment.
AT&T’s move in this regard is exceptionally misleading, and Verizon wants to let everyone know that they’re only going to use a 5G designation when “new device hardware is connecting to the network using new radio technology to deliver new capabilities.”

Amateur scientists just found a new planet, and it might even be habitable
NASA’s Kepler space telescope is dead. It ran out of fuel back in October of last year, but the incredible wealth of data that it sent back during its life is still being sifted through, and new discoveries are just waiting to be made.
A timely reminder of that fact comes in the form of an all-new exoplanet discovery made by citizen scientists who dedicated their time to combing through Kepler’s logs. The world, called K2-288Bb, appears to be quite special, and researchers who have looked at the data think it might even host liquid water, raising the possibility that the newfound planet is habitable.

Tim Cook says wearables are now a bigger business for Apple than the iPod ever was
Ever since Tim Cook moved into the corner office at Apple on a permanent basis, both he and the iPhone maker itself have been dogged by cries that the company has lost its innovative edge. That without its late co-founder Steve Jobs at the helm anymore, the company no longer innovates and merely makes incremental improvements to existing products like its phones and laptops. If you need evidence of this, go back just a few days ago to when Apple made that bombshell announcement that its holiday quarter revenue is going to come in softer than expected. Recode’s Kara Swisher declared in a CNBC interview that “The innovation cycle has slowed down at Apple. Where is their exciting new product and where are their exciting new entrepreneurs within that company?” As far as Tim in particular, he’s been the subject pretty much for the entirety of his tenure that he’s not a product guy, that the company is going stale on his watch and that new product categories — like the Apple Watch — are nowhere near the home run the iPhone turned out to be.

Kit Harington: Final season of Game of Thrones ‘seemed to be designed to break us’
It’s hard to believe that it’s finally here. We’re about three months away from the arrival of the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, which returns in April and which HBO teased a bit of footage from during Sunday night’s Golden Globes. The footage was brief, but we got our first glimpse at key moments like the arrival of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen in Winterfell, where Sansa Stark pledges her kingdom to the cause of the dragon queen.

Samsung’s next phone innovation involves two screens connected magnetically
One of the most exciting foldable handsets of the year will be Samsung’s Galaxy F — a device that was already shown off in early November. The phone will have a tablet-sized display when unfolded, but it shouldn’t be bigger than a regular smartphone when folded. The new design is possible thanks to a special transparent film that Samsung will use instead of glass to cover the flexible OLED screen, as well as a hinge mechanism that makes folding possible.
But Samsung has come up with other designs for foldable handsets, including a model that uses magnets to connect what appear to be two independent smartphones.

Apple Music still has a lot to learn from Spotify
At the end of every year, Spotify releases its Spotify Wrapped feature which provides users with a detailed snapshot of what music they listened to the most over the previous 12 months. In addition to listing which genres, artists and songs were played the most often, the feature also lets you know how many minutes you spent on Spotify for the year. The information isn’t necessarily important, but it doesn’t even matter because it’s fun. It essentially adds a sense of whimsy to the Spotify experience.
The same, however, can’t be said for Apple Music which can sometimes feel a bit cold by comparison. Consider this: Spotify Wrapped is such a widely loved feature that Federico Viticci of MacStories decided to make something similar for Apple Music. That Viticci had to resort to doing this on his own speaks to Apple’s failure to appreciate how even a tiny and simple feature can connect with subscribers in a very real way.

Amazon now sending out free samples to users based on their buying habits
Amazon’s latest advertising push should surprise and delight consumers, if it doesn’t terrify them first. Axios reported on Tuesday that the online retailer quietly kicked off a pilot program recently that lets brands pay to send free samples to Amazon users. The users who receive the samples are picked based on what Amazon thinks they’d be likely to buy using what they’ve purchased in the past as a guide. A generous invasion of privacy!
A page on Amazon’s website describing the program went up in December, though Amazon didn’t publicize its arrival. Axios also cited multiple tweets from Amazon users who received samples as early as August of 2018, indicating that Amazon has been testing the program in some capacity for quite a while.
