High school students put on a stage production of ‘Alien,’ and it’s genuinely incredible

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you’ve ever been to a high school play, you know what the experience is like. They’re not big-budget productions, and they aren’t really meant to be. You have students, some of whom are probably acting for the first time in their lives, doing their best to stay faithful to a popular stage production, and it’s usually pretty entertaining.

Most high school productions play things pretty safe, but New Jersey’s North Bergen High School threw caution to the wind in an attempt to adapt the 1979 sci-fi classic Alien for the stage. The challenges of taking a Hollywood film and turning it into a stage play are many, but to say that the students pulled it off would be a massive understatement.

Verizon suspends worker for rescuing cat named Princess Momma from utility pole

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A Philadelphia-area Verizon employee named Maurice German has found himself in some minor hot water with his employer, after he decided to use company equipment to rescue a cat named Princess Momma that had been stuck on a utility pole for 12 hours.

According to media reports, German came to the rescue after the cat’s owner called the local fire department, animal rescue and the telephone company. All, apparently, to no avail. To avoid catastrophe — no, I’m not going to hyphenate that word to create the pun, as much as I’d like to — German reportedly used the hydraulic lift in a Verizon “bucket” truck to scoop the kitty to safety

China cloned one of its best police dogs, and she just entered training

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Cloning was once nothing more than a plot device for science fiction writers, but today it’s being used in the real world in a variety of ways. Dozens of species of animal have been successfully cloned around the world for a variety of purposes, and China just used cloning technology to help bolster its police force.

As CNN reports, Chinese scientists have successfully cloned one of the country’s most prized law-enforcement assets, a Kunming wolfdog named Huahuangma. The seven-year-old K-9 has proven invaluable to police efforts, helping to solve a dozen murder cases and aiding in many other criminal investigations. Now there’s two of her.

Apple TV+ is intriguing, but its success will hinge on pricing

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

After months of speculation, Apple earlier today finally gave us a glimpse into its TV plans. As previously rumored, Apple is jumping head first into the world of original programming with an impressive list of movies, TV shows, and documentaries from an array of A-list creators and actors. From Steven Spielberg and J.J Abrams to Jennifer Aniston and Oprah Winfrey, Apple certainly used its bank account liberally when inking deals with a list of prominent Hollywood talent. Whether Apple TV+ takes off or not, you can’t dispute that Apple is at least putting its very best foot forward.

Early on, I was skeptical of Apple’s TV initiative, especially amidst reports that Apple executives like Tim Cook were giving notes to content creators regarding excessive use of violence and profanity. More recently, though, reports have suggested that the higher-ups at Apple are taking a more hands-off approach, which is a good thing when one considers that some of the more popular programs on TV today — with Game of Thrones being one prime example — aren’t exactly family friendly.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ will officially be the longest Marvel movie at just over 3 hours

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The runtime for Avengers: Endgame hit the AMC Theatres website as well as IMDb on Monday, and all we can say is prepare yourself — this one is going to be a doozy. At 3 hours and 2 minutes, Endgame will definitely be the longest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There had been chatter even before now that this would be the case, and it seems like the speculation was on point. For comparison, Avengers: Infinity War had a runtime of 2 hours and 29 minutes, while Avengers: Age of Ultron came a few minutes shy of that, at 2 hours and 21 minutes.

NASA and ESA are paying volunteers to lie in bed for 60 days to test artificial gravity

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Regardless of what your own personal idea of a dream job might be, you have to admit that being paid to lounge around in bed sounds pretty awesome. That’s exactly what NASA and ESA want a crew of volunteers to do in order to test the potential benefits of artificial gravity for long-haul space missions.

The research, which is being conducted in Germany, will require a total of 24 participants to remain in bed for two full months. Volunteers will be seated at a slight incline so that their legs are slightly higher than their heads, reducing blood flow to the extremities, thus causing muscle deterioration.

We’re a little less than three weeks out from the premiere of the eighth and final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones on April 14, and the trickle of fresh details about the season is starting to become a small stream.

The latest addition to the growing collection of exciting new tidbits about the show’s final season is a fresh interview with Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), who foreshadows some ominous developments in her comments to Entertainment Weekly, in which she promised this about what we’re in store for: “There’s a lot of death this year.”

Boeing is testing new 737 MAX software that could prevent crashes

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s now been a couple of weeks since the crash of a Boeing 737 MAX 8 forced airlines around the world to ground the popular aircraft, leaving none in service. The crash was the second in the span of a year for this Boeing model, raising suspicion of a critical issue with the aircraft.

Now, in an attempt to address any issues the 737 MAX might have, Boeing is reportedly testing new flight software that, as CNN reports, might have played a role in at least one of the two devastating crashes. The new software alters the aircraft’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) to prevent it from being triggered erroneously.

Leaked photo reveals Apple’s new AirPods-like Powerbeats wireless headphones

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Just a few days ago, word surfaced that Apple was looking to impart a bit of its AirPods design on its line of Powerbeats headphones. Specifically, it’s believed that Apple is working on a pair of headphones that will look like Powerbeats3 headphones, only without the connecting cable. The earbuds would still wrap around a user’s ear as to provide extra stability during vigorous exercise.

Interestingly, there were rumors a few weeks back that Apple was going to release a pair of black AirPods 2. That, of course, didn’t come to pass, but a newly leaked image reveals that a black pair of Powerbeats earbuds — with a brand new design — may be coming sooner rather than later. What’s more, CNET last week relayed that Apple’s new Powerbeats design may hit store shelve by the end of April.
