We may soon see the first Oscar-worthy movie shot on an iPhone
Whether it’s done for publicity to raise awareness or to save money during production, the iPhone can be used to replace professional cameras and even to shoot entire movies. That’s a point Apple made a while ago by using iOS devices to record entire commercials. Filmmakers listened, and earlier this year news broke that Sundance hit Tangerine was filmed using only iPhones and some key camera accessories.
The best part about it is that the film was recorded using the iPhone 5s, Apple’s 2013 flagship handset whose camera performance was the best Apple could offer two years ago. However, since then Apple has further improved its camera tech, so I can’t wait to see an Oscar-worthy movie shot entirely on the newer iPhones. (Yes, a movie partially shot on iPhone did win an Oscar in 2013 — the Searching for Sugar Man documentary — but only because the director ran out of money while shooting it.)

Christopher Columbus: Why he doesn’t deserve his own national holiday
Every year, children across the country are taught about the great adventurer that was Christopher Columbus. Famously sailing the ocean blue in 1492, millions of grade-school students in the U.S. were and are still taught to believe that Columbus was a great man who discovered America against all odds.
And in honor of the great explorer that is Christopher Columbus, every second Monday in October, going back to 1937, is a designated national holiday called Christopher Columbus Day.
Only thing is, the true history surrounding who Columbus was and the events surrounding his “discovery” of America quickly reveals that he is hardly a man worth celebrating. Quite the contrary, there is an avalanche of evidence pointing to Columbus being an absolutely deplorable human being not worthy of his own holiday, and certainly not worthy of anyone’s admiration.

Detailed NASA photos show where ‘The Martian’ would have been stranded on Mars
The Martian is the talk of the town, an incredible space movie that makes traveling – and surviving on Mars – seem entirely plausible. Using technology that’s carefully inspired from what’s currently available to astronauts, Andy Weir invented an adventure in space that’s scary, yet very enjoyable. NASA certainly helped out with the movie, as director Ridley Scott and star Matt Damon revealed, and the space agency seems to be quite psyched about the entire project. Probably because it means extra publicity for a real upcoming mission – NASA announced that it plans to send a manned mission to March in the very near future.

Getflix frees Netflix by removing digital borders
Streaming services are wildly popular right now, taking advantage of our insatiable need for entertainment. Music, movies and TV shows are available from a variety of companies, further encouraging cord-cutters to ditch their cable subscriptions. Sites like Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, Amazon and others offers access to countless hours of content, though there’s one major roadblock for many users: all these streaming services are blocked in areas of the world outside the U.S. Geo-blocking, however, can be circumvented through the use of VPN services that allow you to appear as though you’re actually in the U.S. on a computer that is actually outside of America.

Aaron Sorkin’s new movie Steve Jobs opened this past weekend and took in an average of $130,000 per theater showing the film. For those wondering how that compares to other movies, no film this year has grossed more money per theater; Steve Jobs opened in just four theaters this past weekend and racked up $521,000 at the box office.
With Dell in the news this morning thanks to its historic $67 billion EMC buy, we have to wonder: would a similar movie about Michael Dell be as interesting as Sorkin’s new Jobs film? As it turns out, Conan O’Brien already answered that question for us.
