Black Friday and Cyber Monday might be over, but Apple is hoping that some of you are still in the market for a new phone. For a limited time, as part of its GiveBack device trade-in program, Apple is offering customers up to $100 in extra credit toward a new iPhone XS or iPhone XR when they trade in an old iPhone.

Depending on which iPhone model you trade in, you can anywhere from $25 in extra credit (iPhone 8) or as much as $100 (iPhone 6 Plus/iPhone 6s/iPhone 6s Plus). When you decide to trade in an old device, you can either choose to receive an Apple Store Gift Card or a return on your purchase. And even if your device is too beat up to be worth any credit, Apple will still take it off your hands and recycle it free of charge.

Hype is slowly building around 5G network availability, with companies like Samsung promising to heavily invest in building out the necessary infrastructure as well as handset makers teeing up 5G smartphones for release soon. In fact, on Tuesday, Sprint announced plans to bring 5G internet connectivity to nine cities during the first half of 2019, the cities being Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix, and D.C.

Against that backdrop comes a new report from Ericsson which reveals, among other things, that 5G adoption is going to pick up speed, especially after next year. In fact, the report predicts that 5G networks will cover 40% of the globe by 2024, at which time they’ll also handle some 25% of all mobile data traffic.

Security expert explains what Hollywood gets hilariously wrong about hacking

%name Security expert explains what Hollywood gets hilariously wrong about hacking by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s no secret that popular movies and TV shows often contain plot points that, while entertaining, tend to skew reality. For instance, you can’t really outrun an explosion, as many action movies would otherwise have you believe. As another prime example, if you happen to be arrested by law enforcement authorities, you are not owed a phone call. Authorities can certainly give you one at their discretion, but it’s certainly not a right bestowed by law as Hollywood tends to portray.

That said, one of the more inaccurately depicted tropes that we tend to see — and enjoy — in movies and TV shows centers on hacking. In light of that, Wired recently sat down with security researcher and hacker Samy Kamkar who took a look at 26 famous hacking scenes and subsequently judged how authentic they happened to be. Though the depiction of hacking has gotten a tad more realistic with shows like Mr. Robot, movies and TV shows over the past three decades tend to feature hacking scenes that are so out of left field as to become downright comical.

CDC says it’s safe to eat some romaine lettuce again as it narrows down E. coli source

%name CDC says it’s safe to eat some romaine lettuce again as it narrows down E. coli source by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It was just a week ago that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning that probably messed up a few Thanksgivings across the country. An E. coli scare forced the CDC to tell everyone to throw out all romaine lettuce no matter what store it came from or where it was grown.

With very little information about the outbreak to draw from, health officials decided to issue a blanket warning against all consumption of romaine lettuce. Now, with a week of further investigation under its belt, the CDC is narrowing the potential sources of the E. coli contamination and has apparently traced it to growing regions in California.

%name Samsung is still the top smartphone maker, but its numbers keep falling by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Game of Phones (apologies to George R.R. Martin) is getting to be an increasingly tough one to play for handset manufacturers. Just consider, for example, new data from Counterpoint Research that shows Samsung (no surprise) remains the top smartphone maker in the world as ranked by global smartphone shipments. But even though Samsung is at the top of the list, its shipments actually continue to decline.
