Study says coronavirus immunity might only last 6 months

%name Study says coronavirus immunity might only last 6 months by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus immunity might last as little as 6 months and as long as 12 months, a new study from Europe indicates.
  • The conclusion is based on statistical data from a study that looked at human immunity against four coronaviruses that are responsible for the common cold.
  • Determining the actual duration of COVID-19 immunity is a crucial detail for vaccination campaigns, concepts like herd immunity and “immunity passports,” as well as other official protocols meant to reduce the spread of the disease until treatment is widely available.

The world has come a long way in around 5 months of fighting a virus that had never challenged humans before. SARS-CoV-2 is the newest member of a coronavirus family that we’ve already trained ourselves to fight. Four other versions cause common colds, and the SARS and MERS coronaviruses were responsible for dangerous outbreaks in the past two decades. The novel strain is the most dangerous of them all considering what happened so far. More than 5.6 million people have been infected as of Tuesday morning, and over 351,000 people lost their lives so far. That’s a huge sacrifice the world had to make, but it wasn’t all in vain. The strict social distancing measures that most countries implemented have saved lives, stopped the spread of the novel coronavirus, and bought us all precious time. Doctors treating the disease and researchers were able to come up with viable therapies that helped save lives. More courses of treatment for COVID-19 are in testing, as well as brand new drugs that have been explicitly designed to boost the immune response against the novel virus. Separately, more than 100 drug makers are developing vaccine candidates, and several of them proved their worth in pre-clinical and clinical tests. It seems like it’s just a matter of time until the first viable vaccine is ready for mass inoculation.

But it’s at this point that we have to take into account one of the worst types of outcomes going forward. Vaccines should be effective or safe against COVID-19, but there’s a possibility that coronavirus immunity might be shored-lived, regardless of whether it’s obtained by surviving the disease or via immunization. Now, a new study tells us that might indeed be a possibility for SARS-CoV-2, and immunity might last as little as 6 months.

Anyone can make these DIY coronavirus face masks with no sewing needed

%name Anyone can make these DIY coronavirus face masks with no sewing needed by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • If you want to protect yourself from the novel coronavirus, Amazon’s best-selling face masks cost just 70¢ each so that is by far the easiest option.
  • What you might not realize, however, is that there’s another option that nearly as easy and it might cost even less considering how affordable materials are these days.
  • You can make your own DIY face masks with no sewing required, and all it takes is some stuff that’s already lying around your house along with a few simple supplies from Amazon.

Novel coronavirus infections continue to climb at an alarming rate in regions all across the country, but there’s some good news to be found as well. There are finally some positive signs in some of the largest coronavirus hot spots in the nation, such as New York, New Jersey, and California. COVID-19 definitely isn’t going away anytime soon, but shelter-in-place orders have dramatically reduced the rate of new infections, and hospitals are actually not overloaded anymore in many areas.

All that having been said, the inevitable second wave of coronavirus infections will be just as bad as the first if we let our guard down even a little right now. The CDC recommends on its website that everyone wears a face mask anytime they leave their homes, whether it’s to go grocery shopping, to pick up food, to go for a walk, or for any other reason. This is even more important now than it has been for the past few months since nonessential businesses are beginning to reopen.

Face Mask, Pack of 50: $34.99 ($0.70 / mask)

The quickest and easiest option is to pick up Amazon’s best-selling face masks while they’re on sale for just $0.70 each, which is the lowest price ever for these popular face masks. As long as you practice strict social distancing and good hygiene, these masks will do a terrific job of protecting you or helping stop you from spreading the novel coronavirus if you’re already infected. By the way, good hygiene means washing your hands anytime you touch something outside your home — on a related note, best-selling hand sanitizer is back in stock at Amazon right now.

Artnaturals Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizer Gel (12 Pack x 8 Fl Oz / 220ml) Infused with Aloe Vera…: $39.99 ($3.33 / 8 oz. bottle)

That said, there’s actually a very simple way to can make masks yourself that are even more than effective than those face masks. On top of that, you can make dozens of them with a few simple supplies, most of which you already have lying around your home. You’ll obviously still need to practice good hygiene and use social distancing, but these masks will do a great job of adding an extra layer of protection against aerosolized coronavirus.

We came across a great little video that shows how to make a DIY face mask that is much better than most basic masks you’ve seen plans for online. It’s not complicated at all, and you don’t even need to sew or use any hard-to-get supplies. Most of what you need to make these masks is probably already lying around your house, and the only supplies you won’t already have just came back in stock at Amazon. First, you’ll need a MERV 13 Pleated Air Filter. If the one linked here is sold out, use this search and get any well-reviewed air filer with a MERV 13 rating (nothing lower). You also need some Carbon Pad Charcoal Sheets for Air Filters.

Aerostar Home Max 14x14x1 MERV 13 Pleated Air Filter, Made in the USA, Captures Virus Particles…: $32.52 ($5.42 per filter)

Breathe Naturally Universal 16×48 Cut-to-Fit Activated Carbon Filter (1 Pack) Charcoal Air Filt…: $14.99

Here’s the full list of supplies and materials you’ll need:

That’s it! It’s a very simple little DIY face mask tutorial that can go a long way to help protect you and your loved ones. You’ll find the video embedded below.

2 simple things people can do to stop the spread of coronavirus

%name 2 simple things people can do to stop the spread of coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus tips can be found all over the web right now and many of them are quite useful, but there are really only two things that you should be concerned with more than anything else.
  • First, you need to wear a face mask at all times when you’re not inside your home. Second, you need to practice strict social distancing and stay far away from other people when you’re out and about — even if you’re wearing a mask.
  • These two pieces of advice have been shared time and time again based on anecdotal evidence and common sense, but there’s also science to back them up.

As the novel coronavirus death toll in the United States passes 100,000 and states across the country continue reopening their economies, most experts seem to agree on two things. First and foremost, there will be a second wave of novel coronavirus infections. This is unavoidable, even if lockdown and shelter-in-place orders stay in place for several more weeks or even months. But second, the premature reopening of nonessential businesses and the easing of lockdown restrictions will lead to a second wave of COVID-19 infections that is much worse than it would have been otherwise. What’s more, it will begin much sooner than experts had initially thought, likely in the next month or two rather than sometime in the fall or winter.

The bottom line is that the novel coronavirus isn’t going anywhere for a very, very long time. We’re probably about a year away from seeing the first COVID-19 vaccines become available to the general public, and then billions of doses need to be distributed around the world. Even then, not everyone will have access to vaccines and not everyone with access to vaccines will actually get inoculated. Long story short, we’re in for a years-long battle that is going to be emotionally and economically draining. The most unfortunate thing about it, however, is how easy it would be to avoid if people would just do two simple things.

The crazy wireless camera that lets your smartphone see anywhere is on sale for $30 today

%name The crazy wireless camera that lets your smartphone see anywhere is on sale for $30 today by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Most nonessential items on Amazon have big shipping delays at this point, but there are still some great deals to be found on products shipping out right away — if you know where to look.
  • One deal in particular drops one of the best-selling smartphone accessories we’ve ever covered, the Depstech WF010 Wireless Borescope Snake Camera, back down within $1 of its lowest price ever.
  • It connects to your phone wirelessly to let your smartphone see just about anywhere, and the new upgraded model is on sale as well with a 5% discount.
  • These deals last from now until the end of the day on May 31.

The Depstech WF010 Wireless Borescope Snake Camera is the sort of thing that you’ve probably never heard of before. Once you get one though and you see how incredibly useful it can be in so many different situations, you won’t be able to imagine ever being without one again.

In a nutshell, this little gadget has three main components. First, there’s a small box that houses a battery and circuitry, as well as a Wi-Fi radio. Next comes the 11.5-foot-long “snake” part of the device, which is a semi-rigid tube that can be extended and shaped however you want. Finally, there’s a camera on the end of the tube that captures live video as you snake the device into anything and everything you want.

DEPSTECH Wireless Endoscope, IP67 Waterproof WiFi Borescope Inspection 2.0 Megapixels HD Snake…: $30.39

There are so many great uses for this device that it’s difficult to know where to begin, so let’s first cover exactly what it does. The WF010 connects wirelessly to your iPhone, iPad, or Android device and turns it into a remote viewfinder and controller. You can see exactly what the camera sees as you snake it into something, and you can also use the phone to record video or capture still photos.

Here’s a quick blurb from a 5-star review on Amazon that explains one of the countless use cases for it:

I had a water leak in my wall. I didn’t know where it was and the Endoscope enabled me to find it by drilling 1/2 inch holes in the wall. I was amazed when I found the water pipe with the hole in it (see image). Hiring a plumber could have cost me over $500, but I was able to isolate the problem and fix the leak for less than $100 (including the cost of the scope).

It’s waterproof, by the way, so that reviewer didn’t have to worry about getting the borescope wet. Here’s another Amazon review:

Worked perfectly to help me get a gas can protector cap out of my tractor gas tank. Handled a half hour deep in diesel gas, no problems!

That second one is of particular interest because it touches upon something else you can do with this Depstech borescope. It comes with a few attachments that clip to the end and add all sorts of functionality. Once cool one is a mirror that lets you see around corners as you work the camera into a tight space. Then there’s a hook attachment that lets you fish things like keys and jewelry out of places you might otherwise never reach. That’s the attachment the reviewer above used to retrieve the cap from his gas can.

There’s a reason the Depstech WF010 Wireless Borescope Snake Camera is one of the most popular smartphone accessories we’ve ever covered: it’s awesome. It’s also on sale right now close to its lowest price of the year right now if you clip the 20% coupon on the Amazon page — just $30.39. Definitely pick one up while it’s on sale at a deep discount and email us to let us know how you used it. Maybe we’ll feature your story next time it goes on sale!

DEPSTECH Wireless Endoscope, IP67 Waterproof WiFi Borescope Inspection 2.0 Megapixels HD Snake…: $30.39

There’s another, newer model available as well called the Depstech WF060 Wireless Borescope Camera, and it offers a few big advantages over the WF010. First, it’s got a much higher-resolution camera that packs 5 megapixels instead of 2 megapixels. Second, it supports zoom that you can control right from within the app. And third, it’s longer at 16.5 feet instead of 11.5, so it can be fed even deeper into tight spaces. Use clip the coupon on the product page and you can snag one for just $62.69 instead of $66. It’s a small discount, but it’ll definitely be appreciated by anyone who wants a big upgrade.

DEPSTECH Wireless Endoscope, 5.0MP Ultra-Thin HD Borescope, Zoomable Snake Inspection Camera wi…: $62.69 (use code EFJCW8W8 by 4/5)

%name 5 things to stock up on to be ready for the coronavirus second wave by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • If you’re looking for some coronavirus tips pertaining to how you can prepare yourself for the inevitable second wave, we’ve got two words for you: Stock up.
  • Healthcare systems will undoubtedly be better prepared when novel coronavirus infections start rising again, but local stores in many regions still don’t have stock of key essentials.
  • Here, we’ll show you where you can get five key essentials right now — including face masks and hand sanitizer — so you can stock up before the next rush.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Just about every expert you can find agrees that most states are beginning to reopen their economies too soon. That said, they also all seem to agree that a second wave of novel coronavirus infections is inevitable. With that in mind, we know that it’s impossible to avoid a coronavirus second wave. The difference this time around, however, is that we’ll be better prepared for it.

With everything that has happened over the past few months and considering all of the CDC’s recommendations, you know you need to wear a face mask when you go outside. You know you need to use hand sanitizer whenever you touch a surface in public. But you also know those things and more will be impossible to find once the second wave arrives. You need to stock up on essentials right now while you still can, and we’ve got five important recommendations below for things you should stock up on.

First portless iPhone might follow the iPhone 12

  • iPhone 12 specs will include a regular Lightning port that can be used for battery charging, data transfers, and wired headphones.
  • A leaker claims that Apple had a USB-C prototype in the works, but the company doesn’t plan to change the connector on iPhones.
  • The iPhone 13 might be the first iPhone series to feature a portless iPhone, the same person suggested, echoing similar remarks from other leakers.

The future of smart devices is wireless. The dawn of 5G and Wi-Fi 6 will make data transfer faster than ever when an internet connection is present. But moving large chunks of data between devices without a wired or internet connection to intermediate the transfer could soon become a reality. Moreover, next-gen wireless charging tech could work across long distances, and make charging pads forgotten. It may sound like tech from sci-fi movies, but the building blocks of all these wireless technologies are already in place. And Apple might make the next move towards that future with the kind of baby step we all expect to see soon, an iPhone that features no ports whatsoever.

Samsung might fix one of the worst things about its foldable phones

%name Samsung might fix one of the worst things about its foldable phones by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The next-gen Galaxy Fold design might offer a feature no other Samsung foldable phone has, water and dust resistance.
  • A new Samsung patent shows a design consistent with the original Fold, but the handset features a few notable changes that could apply to the Galaxy Fold Lite or Fold 2 phones that are expected to launch this year.
  • The main focus of the patent is describing waterproofing technology for smartphones with foldable screens.

The first foldable phone that Samsung decided to launch turned out to be a nightmare for the company. The phone featured a few design choices that proved to be fatal for the display, forcing Samsung to essentially redesign certain aspects of the hinge and screen. Real-life usage showed that debris can get inside the handset with ease and that the screen protector can be forcefully removed. Both of these actions would destroy the fragile foldable screen. The fixed Galaxy Fold was launched in late September last year, some five months after the intended launch date. Even then, people who have used the handset discovered that debris would still end up inside the phone, despite the fixes. The screen was still prone to scratches, as it wasn’t made of glass.

The Galaxy Z Flip that launched in mid-February was a massive success, compared to the Fold. It was cheaper, better-looking, and featured a foldable display made of ultra-thin glass, a first for the industry. But teardowns found that dust could still get into the phone. Upcoming foldable phones from Samsung might fix all that, and the foldable phones could finally get the water and dust-resistance we’ve come to expect from traditional handsets.

‘Space Force’ review: A solid Trump-era comedy that never once mentions you-know-who

  • Netflix’s new Space Force show, co-created by Greg Daniels and Steve Carell, debuts this Friday.
  • In an interview with BGR, Daniels explained why he wanted to take this project on and make a TV show about the Trump administration’s real-world Space Force in the first place.
  • The cast of Netflix’s new series includes John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, Noah Emmerich, and Ben Schwartz, in addition to Carell.

I have a theory about Greg Daniels’ approach to all the TV series he’s either created or had a hand in creating over the years, a theory that I came to believe even more strongly while watching episodes of his new Space Force series for Netflix that the streamer made available early for reviewers (ahead of its release on Friday).

Daniels, of course, has made a name for himself as a showrunner in charge of landmark TV comedies that have stuck to the tried-and-true half-hour format, which isn’t necessarily what you might regard as the provenance of great, enduring art, nor the kind of prestige TV that sends critics reeling. Somehow, though, shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation managed to pull off an admirable magic trick anyway — making millions of people care deeply about characters ranging from the bumbling manager of a paper supply company to an effervescent small-town government bureaucrat, all while hiding meaningful lessons about the human condition inside these otherwise frothy, lighthearted comedies.

Why is our galaxy’s black hole blinking at us?

%name Why is our galaxy’s black hole blinking at us? by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The black hole at the center of our galaxy is blinking at us, and scientists think they know why.
  • In a new researcher paper, astronomers explain that a disk of material surrounding the black hole may be producing flashes due to “hot spots” that form within it.
  • The research was published in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The Moon revolves around the Earth, Earth revolves around the Sun, and the Sun — along with everything else in our galaxy — revolves around a supermassive black hole that sits at the very center. It’s a dance that began long before we got here, but scientists are doing their best to make up for the lost time by explaining how black holes work, why they exist, and what they can teach us about the formation of the universe.

Now, researchers using data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope operated by the European Southern Observatory in Chile have documented a puzzling phenomenon happening near the location of Sagittarius A*, the location at the heart of the Milky Way believed to be a black hole. It seems that the supermassive black hole is blinking in our direction.

‘Call of Duty: WWII’ will be free on PS Plus starting tomorrow

%name ‘Call of Duty: WWII’ will be free on PS Plus starting tomorrow by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Sony announced on Monday that Call of Duty: WWII will be one of the free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers in June.
  • Typically, the monthly selection of games goes free on the first Tuesday of the month, but Call of Duty: WWII will be free to download for PS Plus subscribers starting this Tuesday.
  • Sony says it will reveal additional details about the monthly lineup for June later this week.

Ever since Sony stopped giving away PS3 and Vita games as part of its monthly offering for PlayStation Plus users, the quality of the PS4 games has seemingly increased. That’s not to say that every month is a grand slam, but more often than not, PS4 owners who pay the monthly subscription fee for the service are rewarded with at least one major blockbuster title to add to their library.
