Apple’s secretive Project Titan just received another serious setback

Apple’s automotive ambitions took a significant hit recently, with CNBC reporting that Apple recently cut 200 employees from Project Titan, the company’s somewhat secretive automotive research initiative. Notably, these weren’t all layoffs as a good number of employees have reportedly been shifted over to different project groups within the company.

The news comes at an interesting time given that Doug Field — who formerly worked as a Senior VP of Engineering at Tesla — rejoined Apple back in May. Field was reportedly working directly under Bob Mansfield and his inclusion in Project Titan created some optimism that Apple’s ongoing R&D efforts in the automotive field might actually result in a shipping product.

%name This scary report says the government shutdown is crippling US cybersecurity by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

At this point, you’re probably sick of reading stories about the ongoing partial government shutdown which, at the time of this writing, still has no end in sight. It’s important to note, however, that a new report makes clear the shutdown has led to a cascade of scary national security-related consequences, none of which have really bubbled up to the surface enough to merit prominent national news coverage. But that doesn’t mean their ramifications aren’t potentially profound — as this new report about the shutdown’s effect on the US cybersecurity apparatus makes clear.

Microsoft CEO: Face recognition technology is basically the Wild West right now

%name Microsoft CEO: Face recognition technology is basically the Wild West right now by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been beating the privacy drum hard this week during an appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, telling attendees that the US needs its own version of Europe’s new GDPR regulatory framework. And, speaking of regulations, he’s also been especially vocal that facial recognition technology desperately needs governmental oversight now, or very soon, before tech companies take things to the extreme and use it to cross too many lines and inadvertently add frightening new capabilities to the surveillance state.

Nadella’s comments in Davos on the need for general privacy regulation have been a bit broad and high-level, but he’s been particularly specific about face recognition technology, describing it as basically the Wild West right now in the tech industry. As in, it’s little understood by outsiders, there’s a ton of potential for misuse and not a lot of robust constraints at the moment.

%name The top 5 biggest streaming shows of 2018 were all Netflix originals by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In what may not come as much of a shock for those of you who keep up with streaming services, a new study shows that the top five streaming series of 2018 were all Netflix properties. Business Insider reported on the achievement on Thursday, citing Parrot Analytics’ global audience demand measurement system, which measures “how much a TV series is wanted in 100+ markets around the world, across all platforms.”

Utilizing social media engagement, video consumption trends, and various other kinds of research, this system might not be as precise as, say, actual viewing figures (which Netflix rarely provides), but it’s yet another sign that Netflix is still the platform to beat when it comes to original streaming content.

The Doomsday Clock remains two minutes from midnight, which is bad

%name The Doomsday Clock remains two minutes from midnight, which is bad by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Doomsday Clock, which was bumped up to just two minutes from midnight in early 2018, remains at the same setting for 2019. It’s the closest the clock has ever been to midnight, matching the same setting it achieved in the 1950s during the height of the Cold War.

Mankind has a nasty self-destructive streak that we can’t seem to shake, constantly warring for one reason or another, building more and more devastating weapons, and failing to moderate our impact on the environment. Since 1947, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has maintained the Doomsday Clock which serves as an all-encompassing symbol of how close or far we are to total annihilation.

5 breakthrough innovations we need for portless smartphones to become mainstream

%name 5 breakthrough innovations we need for portless smartphones to become mainstream by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A couple of Chinese smartphone makers shocked the mobile world this week by releasing two concept phones that are proof the smartphones of our dreams are almost here.

Ever since the iPhone rocked the industry more than ten years ago, we’ve witnessed smartphone innovations each year that culminated in designs like the iPhone X or the upcoming Galaxy S10. But we’ve now reached a temporary design peak, because specific technologies still need to be ironed out before true hole-less, button-less smartphones can become mainstream. And the Meizu Zero and Vivo Apex 2019 tell us precisely what those innovation bottlenecks are, and why big companies like Apple and Samsung have yet to come out with such daring devices.

Beyond things like monitoring your heart health and spurring you to exercise more, future iPhone and Apple Watch models might literally save your life one day in an even more dramatic and urgent way. That’s thanks to the fact the company has been granted a patent for sensors that could detect the presence of harmful gases like carbon monoxide and which could be included in future phones and watches, among other products from the company.

Via PatentlyApple, which spotted the published patent application, we learn that these sensors from Apple could someday be deployed in smart home and Internet of Things devices as well.
