Summer is finally here, and that means lots and lots of hot, sunny days and plenty of trips to the local pool or nearby water park. If taking a dip in the public pool is your favorite way too cool down, the Centers for Disease Control have a warning that might make your stomach turn, and make you second-guess your favorite summer pastime in the process.

A new report on the nature of Cryptosporidium outbreaks in the United States from 2009 through 2017 shows that pools and water parks are the two most common ways to end up with a nasty parasitic infection. The study says a full 35 percent of cryptosporidiosis outbreaks are linked to exposure at water parks and public pools, and the CDC has a very specific guideline that everyone should follow.

Any eBooks you bought from Microsoft will soon disappear forever

With physical goods increasingly getting replaced by a digital equivalent — from books to movies and much more — it begs the question: How does this change our common understanding of ownership? But most people probably don’t give a lot of thought to their iTunes song library, or the pile of eBooks they’ve bought from Amazon and the like. Maybe they assume those things will always be there. They paid for them, after all.

Xbox free Games with Gold for July 2019

%name Xbox free Games with Gold for July 2019 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

This month’s selection of free Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles for Xbox Live Gold members is about as mixed a bag as they come. The headliner of July is Inside, which is one of the most disturbing, fascinating, and engrossing games of the last five years. It’s a bit gruesome, but absolutely worth having in your library.

The other game of note is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which first came out on the PlayStation in 1997, but is still one of the best games of its kind ever made. If you’re not quite ready to shell out the cash for spiritual successor Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, you can grab the game that inspired it for free right now.

Elon Musk believes electric planes will become more practical in about 5 years

For as easy as it is to poke fun at Elon Musk’s online shenanigans, there’s no denying that he was able to revolutionize the auto industry in a relatively short period of time. Thanks to the initial success of the Model S, Tesla was able to prove that electric cars didn’t have to be clunky eyesores. What’s more, the popularity of the Model S — along with the Model Y and the Model 3 — definitively proved that demand for EVs was far greater than anyone could have anticipated even a few years ago.

Tesla’s obsession with all things electric, of course, extends far beyond traditional four-door sedans, an assertion bolstered by Tesla’s acquisition of SolarCity and the company’s plans to roll out an electric-powered semi-truck and pickup truck in the near future.

While you wait for the Galaxy Note 10 to come out, you might want to check out Samsung’s latest phone. On Monday, the South Korean giant launched a device that features three cameras on the back, and three on the front, but not at the same time. The triple-lens camera on the Galaxy A80 faces backward for standard photos. But when you need selfies, the camera module slides up and rotates to the front. It’s an incredibly odd solution.

Scientists still have no idea what that mysterious ‘alien probe’ actually was

The bizarre, twisted saga of Oumuamua — the strange object that whizzed through our solar system so fast it wasn’t even spotted until it was already leaving — just got another chapter. A new paper published in Nature Astronomy declares that the object, which puzzled researchers for months, was definitely (probably) not an alien spacecraft. Phew.

Oumuamua was originally discovered back in October of 2017. It sped through our system and headed back out to space, becoming the first known interstellar visitor to be observed by humans. It was an exciting time for astronomers, even if nobody really knew what the heck it was.

How would you feel if you got a random push notification one morning that just read “Hahahahaha”?

For a number of OnePlus 7 Pro users on Monday, that wasn’t a hypothetical question. Some of them got spammed with what OnePlus acknowledged was the result of a botched internal test that led to some global users reporting some bizarre push notifications on their devices.

Netflix is finally going to stop spending so much money on original projects

%name Netflix is finally going to stop spending so much money on original projects by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For the past several years, Netflix has seemingly been opening its checkbook at every available opportunity for every creator with an idea. The era of big spending may finally be coming to an end, though, as The Information reports that Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos recently told a substantial group of mid- and high-level film and TV executives at the company that spending needs to be more cost-effective going forward.

Former employees say that Netflix would often let the buzz and critical acclaim a project delivering justify the cost, but in the future, if the company is going to spend a lot of money on an original movie or series, it needs to do so with the expectation that the big-budget project in question will drive actual viewership.

NASA accidentally sold original Moon landing tapes to an intern, and now they’re up for auction

The 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 Moon landing is right around the corner, and it’s a pretty big deal. As you might expect, NASA is very much looking forward to replaying the original footage of Armstrong’s first lunar stroll for anyone who wants to watch it, but wouldn’t ya know it? Those original tapes are nowhere to be found in NASA’s archives.

That’s because in the mid-1970s NASA sold those tapes to an intern who bought them without even realizing what they were. The tapes were mixed in with over 1,000 reels which were sold for $217.77 at a government auction. Later this month they could fetch close to $1 million.

Tim Cook says Apple is working on products that ‘will blow you away’

%name Tim Cook says Apple is working on products that ‘will blow you away’ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Given how integral a role Jony Ive played in transforming Apple into the most successful company on the planet, most everyone naturally assumed that the famed designer would spend the entirety of his career at Apple. Consequently, the news that Ive would be leaving Apple to start a new design firm caught everyone off guard and, as you would expect, prompted a seemingly endless amount of speculation and reports surrounding his departure.

One of the more fascinating takes came from a Wall Street Journal article which articulated a myriad of reasons behind Ive’s departure. In one excerpt, the report claimed that Ive was none too pleased with some of the strategic decisions made with respect to the Apple Watch insofar that Ive wanted the device to be positioned as a fashion accessory as opposed to a fitness-oriented device. Even more intriguing is the allegation that Ive was “dispirited” by Tim Cook showing “little interest in the product development process.”
