Apple on Wednesday released iOS 8, its latest major mobile operating system update, but some of the main features in it will only become operational – or fully operational – later in October, following an important update. One of them is iCloud Drive, which Mac users who also own iOS 8 devices are advised avoid enabling until OS X Yosemite is here. But for PC owners who also happen to use iPhones and iPads, iCloud Drive is already available, Ars Technica reports.

San Francisco has been the ground zero for mobile apps that help people find car rides, and now the epic battle between Uber and Lyft is burning at its most intense in the Bay Area. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has just come out with statistics that demonstrate how rapidly and deeply the taxi industry has been affected: According to the new SFMTA director Kate Toran, the number of average trips per taxicab in San Francisco has plunged to 504 in this past July from 1,424 in March of 2012. This drop came despite the fact that rides from the airport remain a taxi industry monopoly.

Apple may be focusing on ensuring customers that their personal data stored on iOS and OS X devices is safer and more private than ever, but that doesn’t mean law enforcement and spy agencies won’t be able to access iOS 8 devices anymore. Wired points us to a new blog post published by security researcher Jonathan Zdziarski, who says that regardless of the steps Apple has taken to further protect personal data and regardless of whether the company is willing to help such agencies, they’ll still be able to force their way into an iPhone 6 or any iOS device running Apple’s latest operating system.

Let’s get this out of the way: There is simply no sane reason to spend days sleeping outside the Apple Store just so you can be among the first people to get the new iPhone. This is especially true because you have the opportunity to both preorder the new device online or to buy it at a number of other retail locations that won’t be as crowded. Nonetheless, while I’m not an iPhone user and I would never sleep outside a store for any smartphone, I really admire iPhone fans’ passion despite the fact that I also think they’re ridiculous.

Tim Cook knows he’s got a hit on his hands with the iPhone 6 and he’s taken some time out of his day to meet and greet iPhone fans who are waiting in line at the Apple retail outlet in Palo Alto, California. IDG News reporter Martyn Williams brings us word that Cook has been walking up and down the line at the Palo Alto store on Friday to meet customers and thank them for coming out. Cook was apparently asked if he was going to wait in line with them to buy his own iPhone 6 and the CEO replied that he’d already got his months ago. Tim Cook was apparently not kidding when he told The Wall Street Journal that the iPhone 6 models will trigger the “mother of all upgrades,” as one MacRumors forum poster just revealed. Forum member Kalsta upgraded from the iPhone 3G all the way up to iPhone 6, in what can only be described as a massive upgrade for an iPhone owner using ancient software and hardware, at least by today’s smartphone standards.
