It’s a busy day in the tech world today as Microsoft just a few hours ago released Windows 10 in 190 countries. And in case you missed it, the friendly folks in Redmond are making the upgrade to Windows 10 completely free for existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. Of course, if you happen to be running Vista or XP, there are ways for you to get Windows 10 for free as well.

Thus far, early reviews of Windows 10 have been overwhelmingly positive as Microsoft seems to have corrected many of the frustrations that plagued Windows 8. Which is to say, if you’re a Windows user, this is an upgrade you’d be well advised to check out as soon as possible.

When was the last time I actually felt excited by a new version of Windows? I think I’d have to go back all the way to Windows 98, which came out at a time when Microsoft completely ruled the computing world and Apple was on death’s doorstep. OK, so I do remember being excited for Windows 8… until I actually started using it. Windows 8.1 offered some much-needed relief but it felt like a transition to Microsoft’s next big thing. The device plugs into the HDMI port on any HDTV or monitor and instantly gives users access to movies, TV shows, videos, music, photos and more that can be streamed from any Android device. Best of all, perhaps, the Chromecast is wonderfully inexpensive at just $29.99.

One smartphone feature iPhone users don’t have access to yet is true wireless charging. Sure, there are cases that enable the functionality and you can add wireless charging support with a quick hack, but Apple has yet to build the feature into the phone. Ladies and gentlemen, the wait is over — Windows 10 is finally here. Microsoft on Wednesday began the long, long process of trying to make the world forget all about the disaster that was Windows 8. By all accounts, the company has done a good job so far, not just by skipping 9 and jumping right to 10 for the software’s name, but also by creating a new operating system that actually seems like it was designed to run on a laptop or desktop, rather than just a tablet.

While July 29th marks the start of the Windows 10 rollout, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get the new software today — or even this week — if you sit around and wait for Microsoft’s updater. If you want to be a bit proactive, however, you can download and install the update right now.
