PS4 vs. Xbox One vs. Wii U: Lifetime console sales

The next-generation video game console war is no longer the next-generation video game console war — it’s now the current-generation video game console war. Each of the three major gaming box makers has now had its new console on sale for more than a year, and it has been quite a roller coaster ride to say the least. Nintendo came up very short in gamers’ eyes when it comes to the new Wii U. Yes, there are definitely some great titles for the console and many more on the way, but gamers didn’t see enough new features on the box to warrant an upgrade from the wildly successful Wii.

Where Sony and Microsoft are concerned, Sony took an early lead when the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One both launched in November 2013, and the company never looked back.

But how do lifetime sales stack up now?

You couldn’t pay me to use a smartwatch right now… but talk to me in 3 years

I’m usually the sort of person who gets very enthusiastic about new kinds of tech products when they first release. Digital music players, smartphones and tablets were all easy sells to me when they came out. Hell, I even thought Google Glass was an awesome idea until I saw how it actually looked on people walking around in the real world. However, right now I look at smartwatches the same way I’d look at a disease-carrying cockroach wobbling across my basement floor. Basically, I don’t want them anywhere near me and thinking about having one on my skin makes me vaguely nauseous.

According to Google’s own Android version distribution data, Android 5.0 Lollipop is only on 1.6% of Android devices that are currently in use. The actual figure is undoubtedly much smaller, as it doesn’t take into account the millions upon millions of off-brand Android devices that don’t ship with Google’s apps and services installed.

While most of the world waits to enjoy all of the great new features Lollipop will bring when their phones are finally updated, a mysterious new version of Lollipop just emerged for the first time.

It’s a safe bet that Nest CEO Tony Fadell is not too happy with Google staff engineer Brad Fitzpatrick right now. Fitzpatrick last week posted a video that showed Nest’s Nest Protect smoke alarms badly misbehaving in his home. In fact, despite the fact that his house was not on fire, the alarms kept going off and he was unable to find a way to get them to shut up. Fitzpatrick says he posted the video for one reason: To warn people away from buying Nest Protect.

HTC on Tuesday confirmed that its 2015 One flagship smartphone is going to be unveiled on March 1st, right before the Mobile World Congress show kicks off, just as has been previously reported. The phone will be unveiled just a couple of hours before its main Android rival for 2015 is formally introduced. Some recent leaks seem to confirm that even though HTC is ready to fight Samsung at MWC, the company isn’t going to try to outdo, or even match one of the Galaxy S6’s main features.

When it comes to online shopping, Amazon is king. The company hasn’t quite mastered the delicate art of consistent profit growth, but when it comes to undercutting the competition and selling an impossibly wide range of goods at competitive prices, there is none better than Amazon. Of course, Amazon is constantly breaking into new areas and it now provides plenty of services outside of simply shipping goods to your door in two days.

And no, we’re not just talking about Prime Video streaming — Amazon’s reach extends well beyond that now.

Windows 10’s most potentially revolutionary feature

The traditional password system is due for a serious shakeup. Because so many people choose utterly boneheaded passwords that are easily hacked, websites are increasingly requiring more complex passwords that get more difficult to remember every time we change them. However, a new report from ZDNet says that a potentially revolutionary fix for this annoying problem is coming in Windows 10.

Even the cable industry’s top lobbyist thinks cable customer care is awful

Stories of woe involving people’s interactions with customer service departments at cable companies are about as rare as snow in the Northeast right now. It seems as though we can’t even go one day without hearing a new tale of terror involving some poor, unsuspecting customer’s interactions with his or her cable TV and Internet service provider. Our favorite recent examples are when Comcast tried to keep money from a rent check that an elderly woman accidentally sent in, and when another woman had to complain to Comcast’s CEO’s mother in order to get results.

Now, things have taken an interesting new turn.
