Google Glass, as we know it, is dead. The $1,500 connected eyewear was a bust for a laundry list of reasons, not the least of which was the fact that wearing the device looks absolutely ridiculous. The crowdfunding revolution has been incredible to watch. We’ve seen canceled television shows resurrected on the big screen and the small screen, the Oculus Rift, the first hugely successful smartwatch and dozens of high-profile video games, board games, card games and any other type of game you could imagine.

If you read George R.R. Martin’s best-selling “A Song of Ice and Fire” series and thought that as a result, there would be no surprises in the popular HBO show based on the books, think again. Martin is obviously deeply involved with HBO’s smash hit series Game of Thrones, and the author just dropped a huge bombshell that will have fans of both the books waiting for some serious unexpected twists around every corner as they watch each new episode of the show.

Samsung is getting serious about mobile payments. According to Business Insider, Samsung is planning to buy LoopPay, a mobile payments company that uses technology which allows users to make payments with traditional credit card readers. This could give LoopPay an advantage over the more limited Apple Pay.

Most of us can’t imagine our lives without a smartphone at this point, but there are clear downsides to being connected at all times. A commonly discussed issue is the fact that we often pay less attention to people in and around our lives because we’re so focused on the connected world. On a more sinister note, however, our phones can sometimes be used against us by malicious hackers or even government agencies, as we learned from the recent round of Snowden leaks. Beyond that, some of the most popular apps in the world “spy” on users by collecting usage data and other private data, and then using it for targeted advertising.

Last week, legislation from the U.S. government requiring carriers to unlock their customers’ phones went into effect. There are still some restrictions, but unlocking your phone should be easier than ever before. Unfortunately, only one of the four major carriers is actually abiding by all of the requirements a week after the new rules were set in place.

A number of people believe that autonomous cars capable of carrying passengers with little or no human control will someday replace cars as we know them today. In fact, some industry watchers think it might happen sooner than you think. But are workday commutes and typical day-to-day trips the extent to which these driverless cars will gain appeal and adoption, or will they also tackle entertainment?
