It’s kind of crazy how quickly face detection and recognition technology managed to push its way into the mainstream. Over the past few years we’ve seen face recognition technology reach desktop photo software like iPhoto and even mass market smartphones from the likes of Samsung. And of course, there are no shortage of stories centering on government agencies who use face recognition technology for identification and surveillance purposes.

Setting the bar even higher, researchers from Germany have reportedly developed a new technology that allows facial recognition software to identify faces even in the dark. Whereas traditional facial recognition software involves the comparison of two photos, both of which must be taken in well-lit environments, the approach German computer scientists came up with involves using a person’s thermal signature.

What it was like to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10

Last night, Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi took to the Windows blog to announce that over 14 million devices were already running Windows 10. Making the OS free is proving to be a smart move for Microsoft, and millions more are sure to join the early adopters in the coming days and weeks, but plenty of users are understandably cautious about updating.

Yesterday, I decided to take the plunge without reading any instructional articles or investigating the issues I might face. Foolish? Quite possibly, but I wanted to know what it would be like to go in blind. I’d seen a few worrisome tweets, but for all I knew they were the outliers. I was going to find out for myself if Microsoft was ready for the influx of installations…

It might not work every time, but a new video shows you one way to convince your favorite band or artist — in this case, the Foo Fighters — to come and perform in your town, even if it’s a small community. How did they do it? 1,000 musicians banded together and performed a Foo Fighters song with the hope of convincing Dave Grohl and his bandmates to come play a show in Cesena, Italy.

Porsche’s 918 Spyder is an 887 horsepower monster that starts at $845,000. Let’s just say this car attracts… a certain type of buyer. And this shirtless guy in St. Tropez definitely fits the bill.

With his model-looking friend in the passenger seat, Mr. 918 tried to peel out in a parking lot full of people to show off. After narrowly missing a few people walking through the parking lot who would have been seriously injured at the very least had they been hit, the guy slammed into a tree.

We’re not sure how it could possibly be any more satisfying.

The 2015 Moto X looks like the phone that could make me love Android again

Why do Android diehards love Android? A lot of it comes down to freedom — they don’t like Apple’s walled garden approach and they love being able to have devices that have more customization options than iPhones do. But freedom isn’t just about how you use software — it’s being free from mobile carrier contracts and the assorted carrier bloatware apps that come with them. And this is why, as Droid Life’s Kellen Barranger explains, Android fans should really hope the new Moto X Pure Edition is a hit.

Windows 10 review: The first 24 hours

%name Windows 10 review: The first 24 hours by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When I first upgraded to Windows 7 back in 2009, I was shocked. Microsoft had somehow recovered from the mediocrity of Windows Vista and built an operating system that felt like the natural progression from Windows XP. It was clean, it ran better and most importantly, it didn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken.

Then Windows 8 happened.

I was smart/fortunate enough to avoid Windows 8 altogether, but as a fan of new technology, I couldn’t help but feel a little left out. I wanted the latest and greatest, and now, nearly three years later, it has arrived in the form of Windows 10.
