Is smartphone innovation a thing of the past? According to HTC, not even close. “This is the end of the beginning,” HTC’s product marketing boss Darren Sng said during a meeting last week, suggesting that some exciting smartphone innovations are on the horizon.

In the meantime, we’re at the end of a cycle of refinement that has seen leading vendors master the current formula. Smartphones are sleeker and more powerful than they have ever been before, and they provide users with an experience that is vastly improved compared to where things were as recently as a couple of years ago.

The latest new flagship phone to boast of impressive refinements is the HTC 10, which was just unveiled by HTC on Tuesday morning. And while leaks and rumors may have painted a near-complete picture ahead of the phone’s announcement, the HTC 10 ended up being the most surprising phone of the year so far.

After what was unquestionably a pretty boring period of time in the smartphone market, 2016 is shaping up to be a breath of fresh air. First Samsung unveiled its sleekest and most powerful smartphone ever in the Galaxy S7 edge, then LG showed off some nice original thinking in the modular G5 flagship phone.

Now, it’s time for HTC to show off its headliner for the first half of 2016 — and the HTC 10 turned out to be quite a headliner indeed.

The Galaxy Note 6 isn’t due until the second half of the year, with some reports suggesting the phone will be unveiled early this summer, a couple of months sooner than the usual September launch timeframe for Galaxy Note devices. While some people might expect the Galaxy Note 6 to be just a variation of the Galaxy S7, one that comes with a stylus, a new report seems to indicate that might not be the case. In fact, it looks like the Galaxy Note 6 will have a unique chip, and support laptop-grade RAM.

Tesla on Monday issued a voluntary recall for every Model X out on the road. Far less important but much more exciting was the release of a new easter egg for Tesla vehicles that unofficially pays homage to Mario Kart and Saturday Night Live. And in keeping with the video game motif, the activation of the easter egg requires a cheat code, so to speak.

Apple yesterday released a brand new Apple TV ad featuring Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. No, not that Michael Jordan, but rather Michael B. Jordan of The Wire, Friday Night Lights and Creed fame. Coupled with Apple’s recent Cookie Monster themed iPhone 6s ad, Apple’s advertising has certainly been on a role as of late.

While previous Apple ads featuring Hollywood personalities have been largely forgettable (ahem, Samuel L. Jackson), if not somewhat annoying, Apple’s most recent effort actually works and delivers a few laughs in the process.

It’s been nearly one year since the launch of the Apple Watch. While the device is easily the most successful smartwatch ever released, it hasn’t exactly set the world on fire the way the iPhone and iPad once did. Well connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities is projecting that Apple Watch shipments are actually going to decrease by 25% this year despite the fact that Apple is planning to release a second-generation Apple Watch.

It seems we rarely use our phones and computers anymore without some kind of connection to the web. Whether it’s through 3G, LTE, or Wi-Fi, we’re always looking to be connected to the internet.

Microsoft knows we’re always looking for ways to improve our connectivity and that’s why it’s figured out a way to fix a concern some internet users are having with Wi-Fi tethering.

The Windows 10 maker has created software that can intelligently adapt the power consumption of a smartphone to maximize battery life while keeping up a Wi-Fi hotspot that can be used by other devices to connect to the internet.
