Talk about a fantastic holiday gift for yourself or anyone else on your list. Amazon is running a sale right now on the Blu-ray set of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy. And yes, it’s the extended edition of each of the three films, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The set typically retails for $120 but it’s on sale today for only $44.49. Definitely grab one while you can!

The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring / The Two Towers…: $44.49

Here’s what you need to know from the product page:

As the triumphant start of a trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring leaves you begging for more. By necessity, Peter Jackson’s ambitious epic compresses J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic The Lord of the Rings, but this robust adaptation maintains reverent allegiance to Tolkien’s creation, instantly qualifying as one of the greatest fantasy films ever made. At 178 minutes, it’s long enough to establish the myriad inhabitants of Middle-earth, the legendary Rings of Power, and the fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans–led by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the brave hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood)–who must battle terrifying forces of evil on their perilous journey to destroy the One Ring in the land of Mordor. Superbly paced, the film is both epic and intimate, offering astonishing special effects and production design while emphasizing the emotional intensity of Frodo’s adventure, and ends on a perfect note of heroic loyalty and rich anticipation.

After the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo and Sam journey to Mordor with the creature Gollum as their guide in The Two Towers. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) join in the defense of the people of Rohan, who are the first target in the eradication of the race of Men by the renegade wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the dark lord Sauron. Fantastic creatures, astounding visual effects, and a climactic battle at the fortress of Helm’s Deep make The Two Towers a worthy successor to The Fellowship of the Ring, grander in scale but retaining the story’s emotional intimacy.

With The Return of the King, the greatest fantasy epic in film history draws to a grand and glorious conclusion. The trilogy could never fully satisfy those who remain exclusively loyal to Tolkien’s expansive literature, but as a showcase for physical and technical craftsmanship it is unsurpassed in pure scale and ambition, setting milestone after cinematic milestone as Frodo and Sam continue their mission to Mordor to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring. While the heir to the kingdom of Men, Aragorn, endures the massive battle at Minas Tirith with the allegiance of Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf, Frodo and Sam must survive the schizoid deceptions of Gollum, who remains utterly convincing as a hybrid of performance (by Andy Serkis) and subtly nuanced computer animation. Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have much ground to cover; that they do so with intense pacing and epic sweep is impressive enough, but by investing greater depth and consequence in the actions of fellow hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure that The Return of the King maintains the trilogy’s emphasis on intimate fellowship and remains faithful to Tolkien’s overall vision. By ending the LOTR trilogy with noble integrity and faith in the power of imaginative storytelling, The Return of the King, like its predecessors, will stand as an adventure for the ages. –Jeff Shannon and David Horiuchi

Amazon and Google are reportedly working on their own AirPods rivals

%name Amazon and Google are reportedly working on their own AirPods rivals by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When Apple infamously killed the headphone jack two years ago, it offered users various ways to get used to the change. The iPhone 7 came with Lightning EarPods in the box, as well as a Lightning-to-3.5mm dongle. But Apple also launched the wireless AirPods earphones, which is by far the best way of fixing the problem.

I’m not saying that all people would be willing to trade-in their expensive wired headphones for AirPods, or that the AirPods deliver the best audio experience out there. But the AirPods are the most popular wireless headphones right now. Nothing really comes close, and we already have a plethora of alternatives on the market, including headphones that were announced and/or launched well before the AirPods went on sale. Now a new report from a trusted Apple insider says that both Amazon and Google are working on new AirPods rivals.

Apple is finally selling its iPhone XR clear case

%name Apple is finally selling its iPhone XR clear case by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the more confounding mysteries surrounding the launch of the iPhone XR was the lack of official cases from Apple. The iPhone maker typically launches a few cases alongside its new handsets, but despite mentioning a clear case in the press release for the XR, it was nowhere to be found on October 26th.

More than a month later, the iPhone XR Clear Case has suddenly materialized on Apple.com with a price tag of $39. According to the website, orders placed today can be delivered as early as this Friday, December 7th. If you’re willing to wait in order to save on shipment, Apple estimates you’ll receive your case on Monday, December 10th. That’s the same date I’m seeing for in-store pickup as well, but call a local store to see if it’s in stock.

This is what a SpaceX Falcon 9 looks like after it comes back down to Earth

A SpaceX launch is a pretty big deal these days despite the fact that they happen with startling regularity. The company has a packed schedule and sends lots and lots of hardware skyward. We normally get great views of SpaceX’s rockets taking off and sometimes landing, but rarely do we see what the reusable stages look like when they’re finally brought back to land.

In a new video by USLaunchReport, one of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets is seen being hauled back to the company’s facilities for inspection after a successful mission. It’s dirty, covered in soot and filth, but it’s still in one piece and that means it’ll go back up again before long.

Apple rolls out iOS 12.1.1 with broader Dual SIM support, enhanced Live Photos, and more

%name Apple rolls out iOS 12.1.1 with broader Dual SIM support, enhanced Live Photos, and more by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple just released iOS 12.1.1, an update that brings even more features and, of course, bug fixes to an OS release that has been largely successful from the get-go. While iOS 11 was plagued with any number of performance issues, Apple with iOS 12 decided to focus on system stability and reliability, a decision which has paid off swimmingly. As we covered yesterday, iOS 12 adoption already stands at 72%. As a point of reference, iOS 11 at this time last year was only being used by 59% of iOS users.

Now as for what iOS 12.1.1 brings to the table, some of the more notable features include support for Live Photos in FaceTime, haptic touch notifications on the iPhone XR, and wider carrier support for Dual SIM, Some of the bug fixes included in the iOS 12.1.1 update should help improve a few minor issues that users have experienced when using FaceID and the Messages app.
