Corning is building impossibly thin, flexible Gorilla Glass for foldable phones

The first foldable phones are already here. Well, one is available for preorder from a Chinese vendor most of us haven’t heard of before, and the other one ihas yet to receive a proper launch, although Samsung showed it on stage while talking about its novel Infinity Flex screen and One UI software a few weeks ago.

Come next year, a slew of foldable handsets from various phone makers will flood the market, with companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and LG rumored to be working on their own foldable handset designs. But not all of next year’s phones are likely to sport glass display, which is what we’ve to come expect from smartphones.

Google pulled a batch of malicious apps with more than 2M downloads from the Play store

It’s happened again. Another batch of apps that exhibit malicious behavior has been found and pulled from the Google Play store — but not before they were downloaded more than 2 million times. That batch, according to a new Ars Technica report, includes 22 titles like the flashlight app Sparkle Flashlight, which was downloaded more than 1 million times over the last year or so. And it follows other recent episodes of this same kind of discovery, such as the one we told you about recently that involved Google pulling 13 apps that install malware on user devices and had been downloaded over 500,000 times.

Our first up-close look at the Bennu asteroid is a messy one

%name Our first up close look at the Bennu asteroid is a messy one by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx asteroid probe spent many months flying through space in order to meet up with its target, a large space rock known as Bennu. The spacecraft’s mission will be carried out over the next couple of years, but its arrival at Bennu means that we finally get a very close-up shot of the rock itself. And boy is it dirty.

One of the interesting things about asteroids is that they tend not to look like you might imagine. We’ve been taught by science fiction to think that asteroids are one big chunk of bumpy rock but the reality is far different. As you can clearly see from the images, Bennu is a big dusty ball littered with debris.

Google is finally fixing its incomprehensible messaging apps strategy

%name Google is finally fixing its incomprehensible messaging apps strategy by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As we and others reported last night, Google has confirmed it’s shutting down its messaging app Allo that never really caught fire in something of a streamlining of its fractured messaging app strategy.

It’s a strategy, if you could call it that, that’s seen the search giant release more than half a dozen messaging apps that all have slight variations and different functionalities, meaning Google has always lacked a kind of iMessage or even Facebook Messenger-style all-in-one app for this kind of thing, which has certainly left the company at somewhat of an unnecessary and critical disadvantage.

Stan Chudnovsky, the Facebook vice president in charge of Messenger, told us just a few days ago that we’re in the midst of a subtle but important shift in this area, away from primarily Newsfeed-style and one-to-many interactions and back to smaller, more intimate message sharing — to the point that now, in his words, one-to-one-style communication now “trumps” every other form.

Microsoft’s cheap, disc-less Xbox to be bundled with game subscriptions at launch

We’ve known for a while that Microsoft is working on an Xbox console that will not have a physical optical drive, but a new report says the console will come bundled with Microsoft gaming subscriptions at launch that would let gamers get into the action as soon as they plug in the device. The same source, Thurrott, which revealed details about Microsoft’s future Xbox consoles in the past, is out with a new report about the affordable console.

The cheaper Xbox will arrive in early 2019, and the console will be bundled with subscriptions right out of the box. When ordering, customers will have the option of purchasing both the console as well as Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions at once.

Apple just shed new light on its streaming TV plans by trying to buy the rights to ‘Friends’

%name Apple just shed new light on its streaming TV plans by trying to buy the rights to ‘Friends’ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The possibility that NBC’s mega-successful 90s sitcom Friends might disappear from Netflix less than a month from now was a major entertainment industry story a few days ago, and it was certainly a hotly discussed topic on social media. Indeed, someone noticed about a week or so ago that Friends‘ show page on Netflix included a note that it would be leaving the service come January 1, which led to a round of commiserating on Twitter — and apparently some feverish behind-the-scenes dealmaking.

Netflix quickly secured the rights to keep the show on its platform for another year (paying a $100 million for that privilege). But there was another player who tried to get in on the action in a part of this story that didn’t get as much attention: Turns out, Apple put in a bid to secure rights to stream the show on the TV platform the iPhone maker is planning to launch next year and for which it’s in the process of commissioning shows and hiring talent.

Apple says the new ECG app for Apple Watch represents a ‘huge opportunity’

%name Apple says the new ECG app for Apple Watch represents a ‘huge opportunity’ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

After a number of delays and false starts, Apple rolled out its long-anticipated ECG app for the Apple Watch Series 4 on Thursday. Originally unveiled this past September, the brand new ECG app represents Apple’s effort to transform the Apple Watch into a unrivaled health monitor in the wearables space.

The ECG app, as Apple notes on its website, allows users to easily take an electrocardiogram from their wrist. As Apple further explains, the app can alert users when they show “signs of atrial fibrillation — a serious form of irregular heart rhythm — or sinus rhythm, which means your heart is beating in a normal pattern.”
