Ben Thompson, the tech analyst behind the influential and widely read Stratechery blog, published a kind of mea culpa a few days ago in which he pretty much did an about-face in regards to Apple Music. He says his earlier analysis of the service, as a means to an end for Apple, was “flat out wrong.”

If you don’t subscribe to his blog (which is paywalled), you can see some of the relevant comments here, but basically, Ben was pointing out that Apple’s move to bring its streaming music service to the Amazon Echo is a “stunning” decision that “quite explicitly favors one of Apple’s services (Apple Music) over one of Apple’s hardware lines (the HomePod).”

There’s search, a la Google. The company also has its hands in self-driving cars, smart speakers, an Amazon Prime-esque membership service — and now the company wants to get into smartphones. Which is the reason for today’s announcement introducing the … drumroll … Yandex Phone.

SpaceX broke multiple records with its launch of 64 satellites at once

SpaceX is already the leading name in the realm of private space flight with many firsts to its name, but the company’s most recent launch landed it in the record books multiple times over. The mission, which was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, delivered a whopping 64 tiny satellites into orbit, which is the most in a single mission in the history of U.S. spaceflight.

On top of that, the mission was performed using one of SpaceX’s used (sorry, “flight proven”) rockets, and its subsequent landing made it the first rocket to be launched and landed three times. It’s not done, however, as it will head back into SpaceX’s refurbishing program to be used again.

Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ series may be getting secret help from Peter Jackson

It’s widely known at this point that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos gave a directive to the team leading the development and commissioning of the company’s TV productions to focus on projects that have the potential to become a cultural force — a blockbuster in the vein of something like HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Our vote for the Amazon production that might come closest to fitting that bill is the Lord of the Rings adaptation it’s reportedly spending a billion dollars on. We told you a little over a month ago the series is rumored to have a focus of some kind on the character of a young Aragorn. Even more intriguingly, there’s also been speculation that Amazon would love to have input from Peter Jackson, the movie franchise’s celebrated director.

Waymo’s self-driving taxi service is now a reality

%name Waymo’s self driving taxi service is now a reality by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We always expected Google to turn its self-driving car technology developed under Waymo into a self-driving taxi service of sorts, and Google finally delivered the service we’ve been waiting for. However, Waymo launched Waymo One without making a big deal over the event. Furthermore, the driverless taxi service is very limited, servicing interested users in just four Phoenix suburbs: Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert.

That’s a service area of roughly 100 miles, Reuters explains. The cars may be able to drive themselves, but they’re not exactly driverless, because a person will always be sitting behind the wheel, ready to take over if something goes wrong. To use Waymo One, you’ll need to register via an app, just like you do with Uber and Lyft.

Facebook’s brutal year of one bad news cycle after another has continued pretty much interrupted, with today offering the latest bit of fuel for the fire. Reporters have been combing through a previously sealed trove of internal emails released by the UK Parliament which has turned up scores of juicy tidbits.

For example: Mark Zuckerberg personally approved cutting off Vine from being able to use Facebook to help users find their friends; the seemingly cavalier attitude internally around Android call-scraping that landed Facebook in hot water; and naïveté early on about various Facebook-related risks. In one email from 2012, Zuckerberg talks about being generally skeptical “that there is as much data leak strategic risk as you think.”

Taking a trip through a fast food drive thru often leads to a feast of french fries, but with health officials warning against the deep fried treats now more than ever, you might be wondering just how many you can eat before you start doing actual damage to you body.

In a new report by the New York Times, Dr. Eric Rimm of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health suggests limiting the intake of french fries drastically. In fact, Dr. Rimm feels so strongly about the detrimental health consequences of eating deep fried potatoes that he suggests you limit yourself to a scant six fries when you’re eating out.

The ‘Lord of the Rings’ extended trilogy is only $44 on Blu-ray right now

%name The ‘Lord of the Rings’ extended trilogy is only $44 on Blu ray right now by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Talk about a fantastic holiday gift for yourself or anyone else on your list. Amazon is running a sale right now on the Blu-ray set of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy. And yes, it’s the extended edition of each of the three films, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The set typically retails for $120 but it’s on sale today for only $44.49. Definitely grab one while you can!

The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring / The Two Towers…: $44.49

Here’s what you need to know from the product page:

As the triumphant start of a trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring leaves you begging for more. By necessity, Peter Jackson’s ambitious epic compresses J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic The Lord of the Rings, but this robust adaptation maintains reverent allegiance to Tolkien’s creation, instantly qualifying as one of the greatest fantasy films ever made. At 178 minutes, it’s long enough to establish the myriad inhabitants of Middle-earth, the legendary Rings of Power, and the fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans–led by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the brave hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood)–who must battle terrifying forces of evil on their perilous journey to destroy the One Ring in the land of Mordor. Superbly paced, the film is both epic and intimate, offering astonishing special effects and production design while emphasizing the emotional intensity of Frodo’s adventure, and ends on a perfect note of heroic loyalty and rich anticipation.

After the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo and Sam journey to Mordor with the creature Gollum as their guide in The Two Towers. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) join in the defense of the people of Rohan, who are the first target in the eradication of the race of Men by the renegade wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the dark lord Sauron. Fantastic creatures, astounding visual effects, and a climactic battle at the fortress of Helm’s Deep make The Two Towers a worthy successor to The Fellowship of the Ring, grander in scale but retaining the story’s emotional intimacy.

With The Return of the King, the greatest fantasy epic in film history draws to a grand and glorious conclusion. The trilogy could never fully satisfy those who remain exclusively loyal to Tolkien’s expansive literature, but as a showcase for physical and technical craftsmanship it is unsurpassed in pure scale and ambition, setting milestone after cinematic milestone as Frodo and Sam continue their mission to Mordor to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring. While the heir to the kingdom of Men, Aragorn, endures the massive battle at Minas Tirith with the allegiance of Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf, Frodo and Sam must survive the schizoid deceptions of Gollum, who remains utterly convincing as a hybrid of performance (by Andy Serkis) and subtly nuanced computer animation. Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have much ground to cover; that they do so with intense pacing and epic sweep is impressive enough, but by investing greater depth and consequence in the actions of fellow hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure that The Return of the King maintains the trilogy’s emphasis on intimate fellowship and remains faithful to Tolkien’s overall vision. By ending the LOTR trilogy with noble integrity and faith in the power of imaginative storytelling, The Return of the King, like its predecessors, will stand as an adventure for the ages. –Jeff Shannon and David Horiuchi
