Google CEO Sundar Pichai is scheduled to testify before Congress next week, and he’ll potentially face questions on a number of thorny issues ranging from perceived search engine bias to Google’s interest in developing a search engine for use in China that would be heavily censored there.

To that latter point, a top US general went public today with what sounds like a pretty reasonable question for the tech giant. It boiled down to, essentially, why are you guys willing to work with China, but have such a problem working with your own country’s military?

Survey claims that ‘purchase intent’ for new iPhones is at a 5-year low

With reports swirling that demand for the iPhone XR is weaker than anticipated, Apple last week took the unusual step of noting that the iPhone XR has been the company’s “most popular iPhone each and every day since the day it became available.” While the statement was meant to alleviate concern regarding iPhone sales, it hasn’t done much to boost investor confidence. Indeed, shares of Apple earlier today dropped to $168 a share at one point, the lowest they’ve been at in 8 months.

While we’ll likely never have a firm grasp on how iPhone XR sales stack up in light of Apple’s reluctance to divulge iPhone unit sales, a new survey from UBS reveals that overall interest in iPhone upgrades is at a five-year low.

Epic Games launched its just-announced digital distribution platform last night during The Game Awards 2018 with a limited selection of games for sale, including Supergiant Games’ new title Hades. Even with its generous revenue split for developers, competing with Steam is going to be an uphill battle for Epic Games. But if there’s one surefire way to get people on your side, it’s to give away a bunch of free stuff.

Epic announced on its website last night that starting on December 14th and lasting through 2019, the Epic Games store will give away a game for free every two weeks. Providing the promotion ends next December 31st, that’s more than 25 games that will be given away to everyone who has an account.

Though the iPhone XR doesn’t boast the dual camera scheme that comes with the iPhone XS, camera quality on the XR is certainly nothing to scoff at. Hardly a surprise, Apple takes a special amount of pride when it comes to camera quality and the company revealed just a few years ago that it has in excess of 800 engineers and researchers working year-around on improving the iPhone camera.

Having said that, a new report from DxOMark reveals that camera quality on Apple’s new iPhone XR is the best in its class among single-camera smartphones. What’s more, DxOMark notes that the iPhone XR recorded the highest overall score they’ve ever given to a single-cam device, just slightly edging out the formidable Google Pixel 2.

It’s only about 30 seconds long, but a newly released clip from the PG-13 reworking of Deadpool 2 that opens next week includes some delightful back-and-forth between Ryan Reynolds as the Merc With the Mouth and Fred Savage. Who, of course, is tied to the bed and appears as a kind of throwback to his role in The Princess Bride.

At one point during the rapid-fire interaction between the two in the clip above, Fred asks a question many of you may have asked upon learning that this new sanitized version of Deadpool 2 hits theaters on December 12th. “Why PG-13?” Fred asks. “It’s a family movie,” Deadpool shoots back. “Also money. Also Disney.”

Alexa is teaching itself to get better at understanding what you mean

%name Alexa is teaching itself to get better at understanding what you mean by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the drawbacks of relying on a voice-based digital assistant like Alexa is you may be interacting with it without the benefit of a screen or some kind of visual element. Meaning, much of the interaction may be dependent on your memory of what the assistant’s software can actually do — and the commands required to execute those capabilities. That said, a few new skills for Amazon’s Alexa are rolling out today in the US that are intended to help Alexa slowly get better at understanding what you mean when you talk to her.

More specifically, thanks to machine learning in the background, Alexa is increasingly able to teach herself to get better at understanding what you’re really trying to say.
