The list of the most-Googled items over the course of the year is always a fascinating look back at the people, places, events and moments that shaped our collective narrative. They were the things that mattered, the things we wanted to know more about — the things that were important to us, everything from a certain royal wedding to Hurricane Florence and a number of elections this year that will alter the course of history.

We searched for those, and for less serious topics, too — search phrases like Black Panther, Incredibles 2 and Deadpool 2 (the top three most-Googled movies in the US throughout 2018).

OnePlus 5G phone will launch by May, but it’s not the OnePlus 7

%name OnePlus 5G phone will launch by May, but it’s not the OnePlus 7 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

OnePlus earlier this week launched a OnePlus 6T variation that’s somehow even faster than the top of the line 6T model unveiled a few weeks ago. The McLaren Edition comes with 10GB of RAM under the hood, as well as faster battery charging technology. But those features will cost you a few extra bucks compared with the regular OnePlus 6T. In a few months, OnePlus will launch a brand new smartphone, one that should be even faster than 2018 models both when it comes to processing powers and data transmission. That’s the OnePlus 5G phone that we keep seeing in various reports, a phone that will not be part of the current line of flagship devices.

Samsung is one of the few remaining holdouts when it comes to removing support for the old 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple “killed” the port two years ago, receiving plenty of criticism in the process. One by one, other smartphone vendors, including Google and OnePlus, launched handsets that did not feature the traditional audio jack. Like Apple, these vendors crafted wired headphones that worked with the charging port or wireless headphones that would compete against the AirPods. Earlier this week, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A8s mid-range Android phone, its first handset to feature an Infinity-O screen. The phone is also the first Samsung phone to ship without a headphone jack. Considering that the Infinity-O display design will also be used for the upcoming Galaxy S10, we wondered whether the flagship series would have a regular 3.5mm port or not. New leaks suggest that Samsung may keep the port in place after all.

Galaxy S10 might ship with a secure cold crypto wallet for storing Bitcoin

%name Galaxy S10 might ship with a secure cold crypto wallet for storing Bitcoin by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the newest trends in mobile is Bitcoin and the blockchain, although only a few companies are ready to offer phones featuring cold wallets for secure crypto storage, or support for decentralized apps. HTC and Sirin are two such companies, with each one having launched a blockchain phone in the past few months. That doesn’t seem enough to establish a real trend, but Samsung is about to join with Bitcoin-friendly features of its own.

In fact, these features might even debut with the Galaxy S10 early next year.

New form factors will give the smartphone market a much-needed boost in 2019

%name New form factors will give the smartphone market a much needed boost in 2019 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

2018 has arguably been a boring year, bordering on an outright slump, for the global smartphone market, with a new analysis of shipment figures showing the market will end the year down about 3%.

The good news from IDC, however, is that global smartphone shipments will return to “low single-digit growth” next year, a trend that will continue for the next three years through 2022. Among the macro factors at play influencing the market are continued jitters over a US-China trade war, optimism around the arrival of 5G connectivity, as well as new product form factors. Those last two, among other factors, are what IDC thinks “will bring the smartphone market back to positive growth.”

As is the case with many of its products, Google doesn’t have just one navigation solution for its customers. In addition to Google Maps, Google also owns Waze, which is very popular with users thanks to its crowdsourced incident reports that can make navigating unknown and familiar territories alike even easier than with Google Maps.

A few weeks ago, we found out that Google is working on finally bringing a version of the Waze incident reports that everyone loves so much to Google Maps, and it looks like incident reporting is now live in Maps. Before you get too excited, however, you should know the feature doesn’t work yet.

New York state may legalize cannabis as early as 2019 under Cuomo’s new plan

%name New York state may legalize cannabis as early as 2019 under Cuomo’s new plan by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, marijuana was often touted as nothing more than a dangerous gateway drug that would inevitably lead users down a path of joblessness, heroin, and perhaps death. It all sounds comically extreme, but that was the narrative many lawmakers pushed way back in the day. Flash forward to 2018, and we’re living in a completely different world. With many of the scare tactics surrounding marijuana now nothing more than distant memories, marijuana legalization is on the rise all across the country.

While it’s perhaps not surprising to see states like Colorado and Nevada embrace pot legalization, it now appears that even New York is planning to get in on the action. Hardly a surprise, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo this past August put together a group tasked with drafting a bill that would allow for the recreational use of marijuana across the state while taking into account variables such as public health, crime, and, of course, potential revenue.

Mega-shark Megalodon may have died off because it got too hot

%name Mega shark Megalodon may have died off because it got too hot by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The sharks that roam today’s oceans can be fearsome, but they don’t really compare to some of the species that dominated the seas millions of years ago. The Megalodon — a massive shark that is thought to have died out around 2.6 million years ago — has left plenty of fossils behind for researchers to find, but determining what exactly killed the species off has proven a big challenge.

As LiveScience reports, new research was presented recently at the annual American Geophysical Union conference that suggests the shark could regulate its body temperatures similar to some species of modern sharks. However, the ancient shark’s much higher body temperature may have been its downfall.
