We were beyond surprised when Amazon slashed as much as $100 off Apple’s latest-generation iPads during the Black Friday and Cyber Week sales blitzes. The 15 most essential iPhone apps everyone should be using

%name The 15 most essential iPhone apps everyone should be using by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One could make a very compelling argument that 2008 was the most important year in the history of smartphones. Not 1992 when IBM unveiled the first smartphone ever, not 1998 when Symbian planted its roots, and not 2007 when Apple reinvented the smartphone with its first-generation iPhone. Why 2008? Because that’s the year when Apple introduced the App Store alongside the iPhone 3G and iPhone OS 2.0. Third-party apps were nothing new at the time, but they were an absolute disaster on every major smartphone platform. Installing them meant going to a third-party app store on your PC, buying apps, downloading them to your computer, and they connecting your smartphone to your PC in order to install the new apps.

The App Store was nothing short of a total game-changer. The idea of placing a third-party software portal directly on a smartphone and performing direct installations seems so simple now, but at the time it opened up a whole new world of possibilities. Apps, as most people will agree, are pivotal to the smartphone experience. Devices like iPhones and Galaxy smartphones are great out of the box, but third-party apps expand their capabilities in an endless number of directions. Most smartphone users would never ever dream of using a phone without their favorite third-party apps.

You won’t have to break the bank to buy Samsung phones with Galaxy S10 features

%name You won’t have to break the bank to buy Samsung phones with Galaxy S10 features by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Galaxy S10 will launch in less than a week, and the new flagship series is surely going to offer buyers many reasons to upgrade. Unlike the boring Galaxy S9, the new phone brings over an exciting new design and lots of new features that were not available on previous top-of-the-line Samsung phones. But the Galaxy S10 will also be pretty expensive, according to recent leaks, especially the premium Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ versions. The handsets will still be cheaper than Apple’s newest iPhones, according to recent leaks, and Samsung and its partners will offer various trade-in options as well as freebies to convince you to get one. That doesn’t mean all Samsung buyers will necessarily afford them. However, a new leak now tells us you won’t necessarily have to go for a Galaxy S10 this year to enjoy Galaxy S10-like features.

LG’s new phone can do something the iPhone XS and other Androids can’t

%name LG’s new phone can do something the iPhone XS and other Androids can’t by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Smartphone vendors are on a race to create the perfect phone, a device that would feature a no-compromise all-screen display. The iPhone X design is one way of utilizing as much as possible of the front side to increase the size of the screen. The Galaxy S10 Infinity-O design is one other way of doing the same job. And in between, we have all the crazy contraptions: handsets with slide-out camera systems, dual-screen handsets, and phones with no ports or buttons. All these devices make various compromises, whether it’s the notch, the punch-hole camera, or something else. That’s because smartphone makers still have to deal with two problems, including the front-facing speakers and selfie cameras. And LG has a solution for one of them.

Home Depot reports bomb threat after man says he’s going to ‘blow up’ the bathroom

%name Home Depot reports bomb threat after man says he’s going to ‘blow up’ the bathroom by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When you gotta go, you gotta go, and that’s something a Home Depot customer in Wichita, Kansas, knows all too well. In a story that sounds like it could have been published by The Onion, an unnamed shopper caused a major incident at his local home improvement mega-store when he chose the wrong words to describe his intestinal discomfort.

According to KWCH, Home Depot staff called 911 after a customer reportedly told them that a man had just made a bomb threat in the bathroom. As it turns out, the man did make something of a threat, but not the kind that usually causes law enforcement to take notice.

Huawei ready to face extra security to stay in the 5G race

%name Huawei ready to face extra security to stay in the 5G race by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Huawei isn’t just a top three worldwide smartphone vendor and the number one handset maker in China, but also at the forefront of 5G — the next standard in mobile telecommunications. Huawei also happens to be facing increased scrutiny in various western markets over spying concerns that were first raised by the US a few years ago.

The company’s smartphone and 5G businesses face risks in several markets, and while Huawei proved it can sell a massive number of smartphones without being present in the US, losing 5G contracts to rivaling networking firms has to be worrisome. The Chinese company appears to be willing to go through any security tests to stay in the race to sell 5G networking equipment to central and eastern European markets, according to its Chief Security Officer for the US, Andy Purdy.

‘Breaking Bad’ movie sequel will first stream on Netflix, then air on AMC

For many of you, Netflix helped popularize Vince Gilligan’s epic AMC series about a certain high school chemistry teacher-turned brilliant drug lord — or, at least, the streaming service helped give Breaking Bad and the story of Walter White’s transformation more fans than it had during the years it originally aired and ensured a kind of longevity to the fandom around the show.

So it should probably come as no surprise that Gilligan’s next Breaking Bad-themed project, in addition to the spinoff series Better Call Saul which has a fifth season currently in the works, is a feature-length sequel to the original series. The movie will focus on Walter’s protege of sorts, Jesse Pinkman — and the interesting thing is it’s reportedly going to stream on Netflix. Before it airs on AMC.

Great white sharks likely pushed the massive megalodon to extinction

%name Great white sharks likely pushed the massive megalodon to extinction by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Taking a dip in the ocean and coming face to face with a predator of the deep would be enough to scare anyone. Modern day great white sharks are intimidating creatures, but they wouldn’t have held a candle to the ancient super-sized beast known as megalodon.

The long-extinct shark has been the subject of many research efforts in the past, with scientists attempting to determine when and where it lived, and perhaps even figure out why it’s no longer around. Now, new fossil evidence suggests that the colossal creature actually died off quite a bit earlier than was originally thought, and great white sharks might have been to blame.

More than 1 million people cut the cord during the most recent quarter

%name More than 1 million people cut the cord during the most recent quarter by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Dish Network announced today that it shed 334,000 subscribers during the fourth quarter, with a substantial portion of the departures being attributed to the ongoing dispute with HBO that’s caused HBO programming to be blacked out for Dish subscribers.

If that wasn’t enough, Dish president and CEO Erik Carlson added that there’s been essentially no progress in talks with HBO over the blackout — the first in Dish’s almost 50-year history, which likely spooked many subscribers to go ahead and cancel especially with April’s season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones getting closer and closer.
