Riding into space on the top of a rocket is something that very few people ever get the opportunity to do. It’s a dangerous journey, but the payoff is something that those of us who spend our entire lives here on solid ground can’t possibly comprehend. It also, apparently, makes your herpes flare up.

In one of the more bizarre but nonetheless interesting reports to come out of NASA this year, researchers reveal that over half of astronauts who have spent time in space have experience herpes flare-ups with varying degrees of severity.

ZTE’s latest phone makes a terrible compromise to avoid having a notch

%name ZTE’s latest phone makes a terrible compromise to avoid having a notch by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For most of 2018, the notch dominated the mobile landscape, as every Android manufacturer under the sun (except for Samsung) hurried to copy the iPhone X. We then witnessed a new wave of post-notch designs, where Android device makers desperately tried to look original by doing the only thing that was available to them: They removed the notch completely, but made some compromises to achieve that design.

We saw phones with two screens — one on the back and one on the front — just to avoid having two camera modules. Even before that, phones with slide-out cameras popped-up, followed by slider phones with back panels that slid up to reveal the selfie camera whenever it was needed. Samsung then launched the Infinity-O display alongside its Galaxy S10 series. But ZTE might have found the worst way of all to avoid the notch.

Scientists bring woolly mammoth cells back to life

The woolly mammoth is long gone, having been pushed to extinction thousands of years ago, but in recent years, there have been no shortage of efforts to test the feasibility of bringing the species back. No, we’re not talking about Jurassic Park-esque cloning — at least not yet — but a mammoth specimen discovered nearly a decade ago is bringing scientists closer than ever to realizing that dream.

The mammoth, named Yuka, was found frozen in Siberia in 2010. Miraculously, even after thousands of years of lying dormant, scientists out of Japan recently managed to bring some of the animal’s biological material back to life.

Are foldable phones the wave of the future or nothing more than a hyped up and passing fad a’la 3D TV? While I might be inclined to lean towards the latter. there’s no denying that foldable phones from the likes of Samsung and Huawei have engendered an excitement in the smartphone market that we haven’t seen in quite some time.

With some folks touting foldable devices as the next frontier for smartphones, it’s no surprise that we’re already starting to see speculation about Apple entering the fray. Just last month, for example, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak called on Apple make a splash in the foldable phone market. Further, it’s worth noting that Apple has already filed a number of patents pertaining to foldable iPhone designs.

%name Japan is going to blast a crater in an asteroid for science by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Japan’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft is doing some big things during its time at the asteroid known as Ryugu. JAXA, Japan’s space program, arrived at the space rock last year and, after much planning, fired a projectile into its surface late last month to collect some samples of it surface. Now, JAXA is planning for an even more daring maneuver.

Getting samples from Ryugu’s surface is great, but JAXA also wants to fetch some of the material from within the asteroid itself. Hayabusa2 isn’t equipped with a drill or digging tool to pierce the asteroid’s surface, but it did bring some explosives.

Imperfect but still promising.

That’s been the takeaway so far from observers noting the results of Apple’s massive irregular heartbeat study, an analysis in which more than 419,000 Apple Watch users participated — and which detected signs of an irregular heartbeat, the kind of thing that could eventually lead to a stroke, in around 2,100 of those participants.

iPhone XS Max vs. Galaxy S10+ speed test: The results might surprise you

%name iPhone XS Max vs. Galaxy S10+ speed test: The results might surprise you by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Year in and year out, Apple manages to crank out new iPhone models with increasingly impressive and arguably unrivaled hardware. Though Android has caught up to the iPhone in many ways when it comes to specific features and overall usability, new iPhone models routinely trounce all comers when it comes down to raw performance. Just a few months back, for example, you may recall that Apple’s iPhone XS — armed with the A12 Bionic — managed to beat a McLaren Edition of the OnePlus 6T boasting 10GB of RAM.

The smartphone landscape, though, doesn’t stay stagnant for long and Samsung’s recently released S10 lineup certainly brings a lot to the table. With that said, it’s that time of year where can finally pit Apple’s flagship iPhone against the latest and greatest from Samsung.
