Japanese cargo mission to ISS scrubbed after fire
Sending stuff to space is very, very difficult. It can be easy to forget that, especially with the seemingly constant stream of rocket launches we see these days, but for as many successful launches as there are, there are always at least a few that hit snags along the way. Such is the case for Japan’s HTV-8 cargo mission which was slated to launch on Tuesday but had to be indefinitely postponed due to a fire on the launchpad.
As SpaceNews reports, the spacecraft, which was destined for the International Space Station, remains grounded today after a fire broke out on the platform carrying the H-2B rocket which would have sent it skyward.

Dark mode finally rolling out for Gmail on Android
If you spend a lot of time staring at screens all day (and all night, for that matter) many of you are no doubt glad to increasingly have a dark mode option become a more familiar part of your smartphone experience.
Personally, Gmail is one of the apps I’m glued to for most of my waking hours, so it’s certainly welcome to see that a dark mode for Gmail is finally rolling out. The caveat is that this is for the Android version of the app only, and you’ll need to be running Android 10.

Here’s how much your current iPhone is worth if you’re trading it in for an iPhone 11
Apple’s iPhone 11 models are official, which means we know exactly how much they’ll cost and when they’ll go on sale. The premium iPhone 11 versions, the Pro and Pro Max, are just as expensive as we thought they’d be, starting at $999 and $1,099, respectively. The regular iPhone 11, meanwhile, is cheaper than anticipated, with the 64GB version retailing for $699. But, as before, you don’t have to pay the sticker price if you’re looking to trade-in your current iPhone to put towards the purchase of one the new iPhones.

Galaxy S11 colors may have been leaked months before the phone’s reveal
Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ last month, but leaks don’t care about release dates. On Tuesday, SamMobile shared its second substantial Galaxy S11 leak in as many weeks, purportedly revealing the color options for a flagship phone which almost certainly won’t be announced until 2020.
According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S11 will be available in Blue, Pink, Black, and White. All four of these colors are also available for the Galaxy Note 10 (though not in every territory). Apple expanded its color palette with the launch of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro earlier this week, but Samsung’s range was fairly impressive this year as well, from yellow to silver to red, and even green, which Apple brought to the iPhone 11 Pro.

Nobody seems to know if India’s Moon lander survived its crash landing
Everything seemed to be going splendidly for India’s space agency last week as excitement was building for the anticipated touchdown of the Chandrayaan-2 lunar lander. Years and years of planning had put India in the perfect position to claim a spot on the short list of countries to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, but that all changed just moments before the spacecraft was destined to land.
The spacecraft went silent just minutes before it was supposed to safely touch down on the Moon, leaving its handlers back on Earth scrambling to save it. Now, with India’s lunar orbiter having spotted the crashed lander from above, there’s one question on everyone’s mind: Is it alive?

Apple’s iPhone 11 pricing strategy is spot-on for its new services era
This morning on CNBC’s program Squawk Alley, Bank of America Merrill Lynch senior equity research analyst Wamsi Mohan praised Apple’s pricing strategy for the iPhone 11. As a reminder, per Apple’s annual fall event yesterday, the company decided to sell the new iPhone 11 (the successor to the iPhone XR) at a base price of $699 instead of $749, something Mohan said shows that Apple is demonstrating “an ability to be tactical and understand the market dynamics.”
To be sure, though, there’s also another consideration. And it has to do with the new era Apple has pushed itself into, one dominated increasingly by paid services like Apple Music and the forthcoming Apple TV+.

Hubble just detected water vapor around a distant exoplanet
In the ongoing search for life beyond Earth, astronomers studying distant exoplanets are looking for a few key ingredients. For starters, a planet has to be close enough to its host star to receive sufficient heat, but far enough away that it’s not boiling hot. Second, and equally as important, is the presence of water, which, as far as we know, is vital to all life.
Most of the exoplanets scientists spot are either too hot or too cold, or are big balls of gas with no clear surface. K2-18b is different, and observations from the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that it’s not only at the right distance from its star, but it actually has water vapor in its atmosphere. This is huge.

‘Stranger Things’ breakout star Millie Bobbie Brown has a new project in the works for Netflix
Stranger Things is one of the best shows you can stream right now — Netflix made three seasons so far, and a fourth is in development — and the young actress who plays one of the heroes of the horror series is easily the show’s biggest breakout star. Fans of the series probably know who I’m talking about; British actress Millie Bobbie Brown, who plays Eleven on the show. Earlier this year, Brown was rumored to be in the running for a part in Marvel’s upcoming MCU film The Eternals, although she denied any involvement and Marvel never confirmed her as an addition to the growing cast of stars in the superhero movie. But Brown is already developing an original Netflix show together with sister Paige Brown, according to a recent announcement from the streaming company.
