One of the big what-ifs that’s the subject of frequent analysts reports and generates so much breathless chatter when it comes to the future of Netflix has to do with whether the leading streamer will ever dip its toe into the lucrative (but supremely unloved) waters of advertising, and what would happen if it ever does. Earlier this summer, for example, analyst speculation about this very thing estimated the streaming giant could instantly generate a $1 billion windfall for itself annually should the company ever go down this road.

Netflix co-founder Marc Randolph, however, is dubious about the prospect. He’s not directly involved with the company anymore, having left in 2003, but in his new book out Tuesday which details the rise of Netflix (titled That Will Never Work) and in an interview with BGR, he details the roadmap that helped the company vanquish Blockbuster, the one-time Goliath of video rental. It’s a roadmap that also explains why the company is such a pervasive titan of entertainment today, and why ads are “a distraction” at best.

Apple’s new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max will finally be released this Friday and hundreds of millions of iPhone users around the world… won’t be upgrading. The next-generation iPhone lineup set to be released on September 20th is obviously made up of the best iPhones Apple has ever created. Of that, there is absolutely no question. Apple’s new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro design is remarkably sleek, with new frosted glass backs that are even more minimalistic now thanks to the removal of the “iPhone” logo. They’re obviously also the most power iPhones to date, with benchmark test scores that are off the charts, once again obliterating rival Android flagships. Assuming Samsung still moves ahead with S-series handsets early next year, it’s likely that we’ll get a trio of Galaxy S11 variants topping out with a Plus-branded size at the high end — and maybe even wowing fans of the brand with an innovative new design. We say “assuming” Samsung presses forward with an S11 in early 2020, because as we noted on Monday a rumor has begun to circulate (attributable to well-known leaker Evan Blass) that Samsung will merge its S and Note handset brands, producing something new possibly in lieu of an S11 next year.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s design teams are still hard at work behind the scenes and have just patented a stylish-looking slider design that could very well end up a part of the S11, should Samsung end up moving forward with it after all.

An insider familiar with Apple’s supply chain said in a note to clients earlier this week that iPhone 11 preorders were off to a good start, just as we noted that most iPhone 11 Pro versions were sold out, as were several of the new iPhone 11 color options. It took Apple less than three days to run out of stock of some models, offering delivery estimates of up to three weeks for some of them.
