%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google is expected to launch a cheaper version of the Pixel 3 soon, the Pixel 3 Lite that we’ve seen featured in several leaks including an actual review of a prototype unit. But the most exciting Pixel phone of the year will be the Pixel 4, which is probably going to launch In October just like every Pixel model so far. 2019’s most ‘exciting’ new smartphone design ended up being flat-out awful

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Just over two weeks ago, we were one of the first news sites to cover the most intriguing smartphone leak we’ve seen in years. An industry insider posted teaser photos of a mysterious handset codenamed “The Waterdrop,” and our interest was piqued. Considering our coverage of that leak drew in more traffic than any other smartphone post we’ve published so far in 2019, our readers’ interest was obviously piqued as well. Details were scarce for the first few days, but it appeared as though a Chinese smartphone maker called Vivo was working on a new handset with an innovative design that was unlike anything we had ever seen before. In fact, it was quickly shaping up to be the most exciting new smartphone design of 2019. Despite the fact that we were learning about the phone for the first time, the insider said that the phone was set to be unveiled on January 24th.

Well, January 24th has come and gone, and The Waterdrop has been unveiled as the new Vivo Apex 2019. Sadly, and despite all of the buzz that the phone drummed up on Thursday, this new phone didn’t even come close to living up to the hype.

Google Maps is getting another cool Waze feature you’ve been dying to use

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It was only a few days ago that we learned that Google Maps would finally show speed limits during navigation, which is a basic feature available on plenty of other competing apps, including Google’s Waze. The same report revealed that speed camera warnings and notifications, a feature that Waze users love, will also be available in Google Maps — soon enough Google confirmed the feature. But it looks like that’s not the only Waze feature coming over to Google Maps, not that we’re surprised. After all, previous leaks did say that Google was working on introducing the incidents reports feature that makes Waze so great.

Huawei touts that it still sold a ton of phones last year, despite US-led opposition

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Huawei is in the news for all the wrong reasons these days, for everything from the arrest of its CFO to US-led opposition to its devices over national security-related fears. Yet despite all that, even with Western governments increasingly banning the company’s devices over Huawei’s perceived ties to China’s central government, the China-based tech giant still managed to post record numbers in 2018, the company announced today — a record driven in large part by its smartphone division that, at least in 2018, was still seeing explosive growth.

Of course, going forward is a different matter. Thanks to the effects of the ongoing US-China trade tensions, and a slowing economy in China, it seems as though the future is going to be less rosy for the company, which made news in recent days for its founder speculating that “mediocre” employees are going to get the ax in light of the challenges ahead.

NASA’s Opportunity rover enters its 16th year on Mars, but it’s still dead quiet

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Today, NASA is celebrating the monumental achievements of the Opportunity rover as it tallies a full 15 years on the planet Mars. The rover landed on Mars on January 24, 2004, and it’s had an incredible stretch of good fortune in its decade-and-a-half on the planet.

Unfortunately, Opportunity has been silent for over six months, and it’s unclear exactly what its status is. The solar-powered robot was swallowed up by a massive dust storm that engulfed the entirety of Mars last year, and even though the skies have since cleared, the rover shows no signs of awaking from its unplanned slumber.

The iPhone XR was quietly Apple’s top-selling iPhone model last quarter

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There’s no denying that cumulative iPhone sales were down during the recent holiday quarter, but that’s not to say that sales have completely plummeted. Far from it, Tim Cook explained in his letter to investors earlier this month that Apple’s revised guidance for the December quarter was 100% attributable to a revenue shortfall in China. Put differently, iPhone sales are seemingly doing quite well across the globe, save of course for China.

Consequently, the narrative that the iPhone XR has been nothing short of a colossal failure isn’t exactly on point. And sure, while Apple’s marketing with respect to the iPhone XR may leave a little to be desired, the cold hard data shows that Apple’s entry-level iPhone is actually performing as expected.
