With Disney+ set to launch this fall and Apple’s streaming service presumably arriving in the near future as well, every month feels a little more important than the last for Netflix. That’s not to say that any streaming platform will be able to take the crown from Netflix, but the bigger and more compelling Netflix’s content library is when other challengers do arise, the more likely consumers will be to stick with what they know.

To that end, Netflix will kick off February with two bizarre and incredibly fascinating originals: an odd horror film called Velvet Buzzsaw about art that kills people, and a comedy series called Russian Doll about a woman who keeps living the same day over and over again. And that’s just day one!

Phones with foldable screens will finally begin to hit the market as well in 2019, after years of rumors and anticipation. Fingerprint sensors are getting embedded beneath phone displays instead of under them or on the backs of phones, camera technology is improving by leaps and bounds, and plenty more notable changes will come to new smartphone models in 2019.

Interestingly, there is one new smartphone line coming in 2019 that’s rumored to lack the sort of change customers are looking for: Apple’s new iPhone lineup. Rumor has it that the upcoming iPhone 11 series will reuse Apple’s iPhone X design for a third consecutive year, marking the second time Apple has chosen to recycle the same old iPhone designs for more than two years. Samsung’s first foldable phone should hit store shelves in early April, according to a recent report, at which point the device will become the benchmark for this new smartphone form factor. That’s because Samsung had been teasing foldable phones many years before it actually unveiled one. Samsung took a ton of time to develop the Galaxy F, and a recent marketing push from the company had a clear message that the phone delivers several breakthrough innovations. But it’s hard to get too excited about the Galaxy F, a phone that’s supposed to cost around $2,000, knowing that a Chinese company has already shown off a prototype of a device that looks a lot better than Samsung’s folding phone.

A report a few days ago said that LG would introduce a few interesting technologies at this year’s Mobile World Congress edition that kicks off in late February in Barcelona, Spain. The South Korean giant has been developing phones with secondary displays that shouldn’t be confused with foldable devices, as well as a new way of interacting with phones by using only gestures instead of touch. The phone’s camera would be able to pick gestures from 20 to 30cm away, the report said. It wasn’t clear at the time whether the upcoming LG flagship, tentatively named G8 ThinQ will make use of both a new screen design and the new touchless control, and LG won’t confirm any of it until MWC. But the company is already teasing the gesture-based interaction technology.
