Tech journalists and bloggers complain each and every year that the annual Consumer Electronics Show is boring. “Everyone always complains about how boring CES is,” they say, “but this year really is more boring than ever.” Well, guess what… everyone always complains about how boring CES is, but this year it really is more boring than ever. From 8K TVs no one needs or even wants to a bunch of new laptops that promise their tired AI features will be game-changers, we haven’t seen anything at all that has knocked our socks off. In fact, there are only two things we’ve seen at CES 2019 that have really generated significant buzz.

The first is LG’s new LG Signature OLED TV R. This incredible new 4K TV features a rollable display that retracts into the base. It’s phenomenal, but there’s one problem: it didn’t actually debut at CES 2019. LG announced it last year at CES 2018, and then showed it off again this year with the promise that it won’t just be vaporware for much longer. The second buzzworthy product shown off at CES 2019 doesn’t even have anything to do with consumer technology. Nope, it’s called the Impossible Burger 2.0 and people who have tried it say that this time around, it really does taste like actual meat.

So, long story short, the most exciting new products from CES 2019 are a TV from CES 2018 and a veggie burger. Well, that’s if you don’t count one more new product that was only shown off at CES 2019 behind closed doors.

This is what using Samsung’s foldable phone feels like

%name This is what using Samsung’s foldable phone feels like by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung’s first foldable phone is not just a hot rumor anymore. The phone was officially unveiled in early November, at Samsung’s 2018 developer conference. However, Samsung only showed the main screen of the device, demoed the new One UI interface that will run on top of Android, and revealed some of the phone’s specs. Samsung did not show the full product or share any press renders of the phone’s design. It didn’t even announce a name for the handset, which is rumored to be called Galaxy F, Galaxy Flex, or Galaxy Fold. But Samsung did bring the handset at CES 2019 to show this almost final version to partners.

Gone are the days when Samsung phones would ship with plenty of bloatware. That’s software that you didn’t really need but which Samsung and its carrier partners preinstalled on the new phone. But Samsung phones still ship with built-in apps that you can’t delete. And it turns out that Facebook is one of them.

Demand for smartphones in China slows down, spelling trouble for tech giants

%name Demand for smartphones in China slows down, spelling trouble for tech giants by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When China sneezes, a big chunk of the smartphone industry apparently catches the flu. On the heels of tech giants like Apple and Samsung coming out with lowered revenue forecasts for the holiday quarter, which they blamed in part on a slowdown in China’s economy, new numbers out today paint a worrisome picture for the world’s second largest economy. The key takeaway: China is arguably dragging the smartphone industry into a recession.

Scientists say they could genetically engineer spicy tomatoes

%name Scientists say they could genetically engineer spicy tomatoes by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Tomatoes are a lovely addition to a sandwich or burger, and they’re used to create all kinds of sauces and condiments that have become a staple of a western diet, but they’re also a bit, well, bland. A tomato on its own doesn’t have much bite, but scientists who specialize in genetics could change that, and perhaps even change the way tomatoes are used in the process.

In a new paper published in Trends In Plant Science, researchers suggest that by studying the DNA of the chili pepper, which is a cousin of the tomato, they could give the veggies a potent kick. By altering tomatoes to produce capsaicinoids — the compounds that cause the burning sensation in our mouths when we eat something spicy — the scientists believe they could make mass production of capsaicin for various commercial uses.

Bombshell report reveals how location data from carriers often ends up in the wrong hands

%name Bombshell report reveals how location data from carriers often ends up in the wrong hands by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A new bombshell report from Joseph Cox over at Motherboard details how carriers like Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile are all in the business of selling real-time location data of subscribers. While this in and of itself isn’t a new development, Motherboard reveals that this location data far too often ends up in the hands of bounty hunters who are willing to give up an individual’s location for the right price.

Cox himself used himself as a guinea pig of sorts and paid a bounty hunter $300 to help him track down the location of a friend who agreed to be part of the experiment. The bounty hunter, armed with only the phone number of the target, was able to track down the target’s location to a hyper-specific area and sent a snapshot of the location via Google Maps.

Here’s what NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft sees as it orbits Bennu asteroid

%name Here’s what NASA’s OSIRIS REx spacecraft sees as it orbits Bennu asteroid by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s only been about a week since NASA successfully inserted its OSIRIS-REx asteroid probe into orbit around the large space rock known as Bennu, after initially arriving in early December. The diamond-shaped object will quickly become one of the most closely-studied asteroids ever, but for now NASA wants to learn as much about Bennu’s surface as possible, and that means observing it from every angle.

In a new video animation that has been stitched together from numerous still shots we get one of our best looks yet at the asteroid. As the probe circles the rock, its powerful lens has captured Bennu from just about every angle, making for a neat little movie.

Tim Cook defends Apple, says product pipeline and ecosystem underappreciated by investors

%name Tim Cook defends Apple, says product pipeline and ecosystem underappreciated by investors by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s been an interesting few weeks for Apple, to say the least. In early October of 2018, the company was riding high. Interest in the iPhone XR release was mounting and Apple shares, as a result, were trading at an all-time high. Flash forward a few weeks and the narrative surrounding Apple seemingly did a 180 as reports of tepid iPhone XR demand began to emerge. And while it’s easy to dismiss any lone rumor from the supply chain, the sheer number of reports pointing to disappointing iPhone XR sales became too large to ignore.

About a week ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook penned a letter to investors and disclosed that Apple was revising its quarterly guidance for revenue by a few billion dollars on account of slower than expected iPhone XR sales. Apple shares, which were already down at this point, sunk even further and are now trading at levels not seen since mid-2017.

Russian church leader: Smartphones are laying groundwork for the Antichrist

Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, had to know which particular snippet from a recent interview he gave on state TV in the country would rocket around the web. Maybe he didn’t.

Nevertheless, the church leader went on a little bit of a rant about smartphones during his interview and blasted our fixation on these devices as heralding the arrival of something terrible. No, not gadget addiction. Not broken lives. Smartphones, he promised, are paving the way for the antichrist.
