While Android is usually the mobile platform of choice for hackers, new research that’s about to be presented at the USENIX Security Symposium in San Diego shows that it’s actually possible to use a newly discovered trick to steal data from an unsuspecting smartphone users’ apps, whether they’re running Android, iOS or Windows Phone, Phys.org reports.

If you aren’t clamoring for the BlackBerry Passport yet, just wait until you see how well it can portray x-rays of your lungs. In a new post highlighting the Passport’s unique square display, BlackBerry says that the Passport’s resolution is perfect for seeing images accurately and clearly while noting that any doctor who wants to look at detailed x-rays on their smartphone couldn’t do any better than the device’s 4.5-inch screen.

We’re just two weeks out from IFA 2014, which means unannounced phones have already started passing through China’s TENAA agency. On Thursday, the Xperia Z3 appeared on the agency’s website, complete with a full spec sheet and high-resolution press photos. Some of the details are missing, but it’s the most sizable leak for the new Sony flagship smartphone we’ve seen so far.

Security has always been a huge concern for Android users. From seemingly insignificant security flaws to massive outbreaks that make international headlines, it’s never a bad idea to be cautious when downloading a new app or browsing the web. Unfortunately, sometimes even being careful isn’t enough. In a recent analysis, the FireEye Mobile Security Team discovered that 68% of the top 1,000 free apps on Google Play are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks.

Windows Phone’s global market share is in very bad shape… but things could always be worse. The Guardian reports that new data from research group eMarketer shows that Windows Phone’s user base in the United Kingdom is poised to limp past BlackBerry’s this year, thus marking the first time that Microsoft’s mobile OS has surpassed BlackBerry in the Land of Hope and Glory in terms of active user base.

Game demos had a minor resurgence during the last generation. A quick search on either the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Marketplace brings up hundreds of results for demos of PS3 and Xbox 360 games, but the same can’t be said for PS4 and Xbox One. Sprint’s not going down without a fight. The carrier on Thursday announced a new plan for individual subscribers that would give them unlimited talk, text and data for just $60 per month, the lowest price of any unlimited data plan offered by a major wireless carrier in the United States. Not all iPhone fans will want the bigger iPhone 6 models, and many people might be waiting for Apple to finally unveil its 2014 iPhones just so they can purchase a discounted, on-contract iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c. From previous years’ experience, we know that Apple likely offers discounts on its older iPhone models when it releases new ones and this year probably won’t be any different. However, prospective iPhone buyers who don’t want to wait until September can already check Walmart’s new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c deals, which may offer even better prices.
