Apple is widely expected to launch a smaller, thinner, fanless 12-inch Retina MacBook Air laptop next year, and it may feature a design made possible by Intel’s Core M “Broadwell” processor the chipmaker launched this year. CPU World has listed four brand new Intel Core M processor versions that are even better than the Core M chips Intel already launched, with MacRumors saying these Core M versions are destined for Apple’s upcoming Retina MacBook Air.

Microsoft has unveiled a lot of cool products this year but for our money the coolest one is the new Skype Translator software that will interpret what someone is saying in real time and offer you a translation into your preferred language right on your screen. If it works as well as Microsoft hopes, it would go a long way toward breaking down language barriers and allow us to interact with people in ways we never before imagined.

Samsung will update the “old” Galaxy S4 to Android 5.0 Lollipop, SamMobile has learned, making Lollipop the third major Android update the handset will receive after Android 4.3 and Android 4.4. It’s not clear at this time when the Galaxy S4 will be upgraded to Lollipop, with the publication saying the Exynos version should get it first at some point in early 2015, assuming everything goes well. After all, Samsung hasn’t been quick to release such updates to previous flagship devices in the past.

Microsoft is back to its old tricks again. The company still seems to be holding a grudge from back in the days of Apple’s “I’m a Mac” ad campaign, and it targets Apple every chance it gets in its various advertisements and marketing efforts. Last week, Microsoft informed us that its cheap $100 Lumia phone and a bunch of bundled accessories and services are a better buy than Apple’s iPhone 6, and now Microsoft is back to convince us that Lenovo’s latest ultra-thin Windows laptop is a better machine than the MacBook Air.

In Microsoft’s latest attempt to bolster Xbox One sales, the price of the console has dropped $50 for the holiday season, but this is only a temporary fix to a problem that won’t go away any time soon. The fact of the matter is that the PlayStation 4 install base is significantly larger than that of the Xbox One, which is why a more permanent solution might be on the table.

Sprint may have a new CEO, but it’s still putting out the same dismal quarterly earnings reports. In its fiscal Q2 2014 earnings released Monday, Sprint posted a net loss of $0.19 per share, or more than triple the consensus estimate of a loss of $0.06 per share. The company also missed badly on its revenue expectations as its quarterly revenues of $8.49 billion were less than the consensus estimate of $8.59 billion. Perhaps the most discouraging number for Sprint, however, was that it lost a total of 272,000 postpaid subscribers on the quarter even as rivals Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T all posted impressive postpaid gains over the same period.

Even though Apple released two new iPad models this year, including the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3, only the 9.7-inch version received a significant upgrade, with the mini model only getting a Touch ID fingerprint sensor and an extra color option. A report from Chinese publication Economic Daily News suggests that starting next year, Apple will discontinue the iPad mini line and replace it with the bigger 12.2-inch iPad Pro model.
