Here’s how to stay safe from coronavirus when eating at a restaurant

%name Here’s how to stay safe from coronavirus when eating at a restaurant by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Now that all 50 states have reopened their economies to one degree or another, here are some coronavirus tips to follow when you’re in a setting like a restaurant dining room.
  • At least 30 states have now allowed restaurants to reopen their dining rooms, generally maxed at a reduced capacity for now.
  • The behaviors you should follow there mirror the other coronavirus prevention measures people should already be doing, like washing your hands regularly.

Going out to eat again at a restaurant near my apartment, for the first time since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, wasn’t as weird as I thought it might be. But there was also an abundance of reminders pretty much everywhere you looked to make the experience, if not quite the surreal dystopia that the scariest stories would have you believe, at least still weird enough to not let you forget that we’re living in extraordinary times.

I chose a comfort food-style pub after ordering to-go meals more than once from it while the quarantine/shelter-in-place rules were in place and restaurants were still closed to diners inside. I did so after seeing how well the restaurant had changed its operation and procedures to keep everyone safe, which gave me enough mental assurance that I would likewise be okay here once the dining room re-opens. It sounds like a bit of a drawn-out thought experiment in lieu of the snap judgments we once made about where to go to grab a bite to eat, but such is life in the coronavirus age. And the byzantine new rules that restaurants have to follow in order to keep their businesses safe and coronavirus-free, a tough task to pull off, aren’t going away anytime soon.

Exciting new study suggests we can definitely make a coronavirus cure

%name Exciting new study suggests we can definitely make a coronavirus cure by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A miracle coronavirus cure isn’t available at the moment, but scientists found more proof that the human immune system can develop neutralizing antibodies that can block the virus from infected cells.
  • These antibodies can be used to develop COVID-19 treatments, including vaccines and monoclonal antibodies that would work just like a plasma transfusion from a recovered patient.
  • Not all COVID-19 patients develop such strong antibodies, but the ones that can “kill” the virus have been found in several people who beat the disease.

The novel coronavirus is highly contagious and can be fatal, but it can also be killed. We just need to develop effective drugs that can speed up recovery and reduce the risk of complications, and then make them widely available. Once that happens, it won’t matter as much that the virus can’t be eradicated or that the immunity we get after recovery is short-lived. And more and more studies have been proving that the kind of miracle drug that can kill SARS-CoV-2 is created right inside the human body, and it can be used to create effective vaccines and other meds that target the COVID-19 virus specifically.

These miraculous drugs are the antibodies the immune system gets trained to manufacture in response to any pathogen that enters the body. Immune cells identify the foreign cells, mark them, and destroy them. The antibodies that result can then stop the same infectious microorganism from infecting human cells again, and that’s why plasma therapies work. Now, researchers from Rockefeller University have published a study that details the existence of universally effective antibodies.

The coronavirus pandemic is still getting worse in these 24 US states

%name The coronavirus pandemic is still getting worse in these 24 US states by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Researchers estimate that half of the states within the United States haven’t yet reached their peak levels of novel coronavirus infections.
  • A state-by-state breakdown shows that 24 states still don’t have the virus under control.
  • Whether you live in a state where the virus has seemingly peaked or not, remember that a second wave is all but a guarantee at this point, especially as states begin to loosen restrictions on gatherings and services.

The coronavirus pandemic has been raging in the United States for months now, but not every state has been impacted in the same way. Some states have likely seen the worst of the first wave of infections, while others are only now grappling with sharp increases in the number of cases they’re seeing.

A new study (PDF) from an international group of scientists and researchers uses existing data and predictive modeling to forecast when the disease will peak (or has peaked) in each individual state. Unsurprisingly, around half of the states in the country have yet to see a peak, and case numbers continue to grow.

%name Amazon’s big Roomba sale has some of the best deals of 2020 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Whether you’re looking for a Roomba 960, a Roomba i7, or any other robot vacuum from iRobot, all the best-sellers are discounted on Amazon right now with savings up to $201.
  • Prices start at just $224 for the terrific Roomba 614 and they go up to $799.99 for the Roomba i7+ that empties itself when it’s done vacuuming.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

iRobot’s various Roomba robot vacuum models are by far the most popular options out there. Everyone knows that. But everyone also knows that the best always comes at a price. In the case of iRobot’s top-of-the-line Roombas, that price can be as high as $1,200 and beyond. That’s why it’s so important to be on the lookout for good deals on Roomba robot vacuums, and we’ve come across some killer deals today on several of iRobot’s best-selling models.

Starting with the revolutionary Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum, it’s normally $1,000 but it’s down to $799.99 right now. If you’re wondering why it’s so pricey, you’ve likely never heard of it before so you should prepare to be blown away. On top of having all the bells and whistles you want in addition to the strongest suction ever, the i7+ has a special docking station that sucks all the dirt and dust out of the vacuum each time it returns home to charge! That means you don’t have to empty like other robot vacuums so it can run for months without you even having to think about it.

iRobot Roomba i7+ (7550) Robot Vacuum with Automatic Dirt Disposal-Empties Itself, Wi-Fi Connec…: $799.99

If $799.99 is a bit much but you still want premium performance, the longtime best-selling iRobot Roomba 960 Robot Vacuum is also on sale today. With a retail price of $650, this model packs wonderfully powerful suction that is five times stronger than 600-series models, and it also has fun bells and whistles like support for Alexa voice commands. Head over to Amazon right now and you’ll find it on sale for $449.

iRobot Roomba 960 Robot Vacuum- Wi-Fi Connected Mapping, Works with Alexa, Ideal for Pet Hair,…: $449.00

Next up is the iRobot Roomba 675 Robot Vacuum, which also packs Alexa and Google Assistant support along with plenty more great features. The suction isn’t quite as strong as you’ll find on the Roomba 960, but it’s still more than powerful enough to get the job done. It’s also far better than any low-cost Roomba rivals that you see on Amazon. The retail price on the 675 model is $300, but right now it’s down to $269 for a limited time. That’s the lowest price of 2020 so far.

iRobot Roomba 675 Robot Vacuum-Wi-Fi Connectivity, Works with Alexa, Good for Pet Hair, Carpets…: $269.00

Last but certainly not least, the iRobot Roomba 614 Robot Vacuum is perfect for anyone on the lookout for a powerful Roomba that doesn’t have all the extra fancy features. Google tests a feature that lets you use your voice to make purchases

%name Google tests a feature that lets you use your voice to make purchases by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google is testing a new feature that allows users to confirm purchases with Voice Match.
  • Users in the pilot program will see a new “Confirm with Voice Match” option in the settings menu that will allow them to complete certain transactions with nothing but their voice.
  • Google has yet to announce when or if this feature will roll out to the public.

Google is constantly adding new features and functionality to its apps and services, but on occasion, those features need to be tested by a large group of users before they roll out to the public. First spotted by Android Police, one such test is currently underway, giving Android users the option to confirm purchases they make on their devices with Voice Match. For those unaware, Voice Match allows users to teach Google Assistant to recognize their voice.

Shortly after discovering the new feature, Android Police received confirmation from a Google representative that the feature is being seeded to a limited number of users as part of a pilot program. It’s not clear if the feature will roll out widely, but Google has started updating online documentation to reflect its arrival.

Save $50 on a 50″ 4K Fire TV or get a 32″ model for just $120

%name Save $50 on a 50″ 4K Fire TV or get a 32″ model for just $120 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s Fire TV sale might not cover popular devices like the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K, but several best-selling Fire TV Edition televisions are down to their lowest prices of the year.
  • A 50-inch Inisgnia 4K TV with Fire TV software is $50 off today, and an even more popular 32-inch model from Insignia is just $119.99.
  • If you would rather get a TV with Roku’s user interface instead of Amazon’s Fire TV software, there’s also a great deal on a 4K TV that comes with Roku preinstalled.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

You know as well as I do that a “smart TV” isn’t really a smart TV most of the time. Sure, TVs from Samsung, Sony, LG, and others can run apps. And sure, they’re fine if all you want to do is stream movies and shows on Netflix. The simple fact of the matter, however, is that no TV maker will ever support all the apps and games you want on your TV. That means regardless of whether or not you buy a “smart TV,” you’ll need to make it even smarter by adding a streaming media player like a Fire TV Stick, Roku device, or an Apple TV.

Now, there is one important exception. Some vendors sell televisions that ditch the proprietary platforms and instead have Fire TV software or Roku software built right in. That’s pretty much the only time you’ll get away with not having to buy a separate streaming media player. And right now, several of the best options out there that have Fire TV software or Roku software preinstalled are on sale at their lowest prices of 2020. In fact, the two Fire TV Edition televisions we’re going to tell you about have been discounted all week, but they both just got even deeper discounts this morning!

First and foremost, the Insignia NS-32DF310NA19 32-inch Smart HD TV – Fire TV Edition is the single best-selling television on Amazon’s entire site. It’s perfect for a guest bedroom, the kitchen, or any other space where you need a compact TV. This model retails for $170 but right now you can pick one up for just $119.99.

Insignia NS-32DF310NA19 32-inch Smart HD TV – Fire TV Edition: $119.99

If you need something a bit larger for your living room, the basement, or your master bedroom, it doesn’t get much better than the Insignia NS-50DF711SE21 50-inch Smart 4K UHD TV – Fire TV Edition. It has a stunning display, 4K resolution, and it’s on sale for $299.99 right now instead of $350.

Insignia NS-50DF711SE21 50-inch Smart 4K UHD TV – Fire TV Edition – Limited Version: $299.99

Last but certainly not least, the $330 TCL 43S425 43 Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart Roku LED TV is on sale today for only $229.99. It’s sized right between the other two and it runs Roku software instead of Fire TV. Also of note, the 55-inch model is on sale for $299.99 and while it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles you’ll find on the Toshiba model above, it’s a great value at that price.

How to track the coronavirus stimulus check you still haven’t received

%name How to track the coronavirus stimulus check you still haven’t received by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Millions of Americans are still checking each day for a coronavirus stimulus check update, hoping to receive their direct payment from the federal government soon.
  • The IRS has been sending out payments of up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples, with an extra $500 per eligible child, during the pandemic.
  • The US Postal Service has a feature that many people might not be aware of that lets taxpayers get a better sense of when their money will be delivered via the mail.

Many of the people likely to benefit the most from the coronavirus stimulus checks the federal government started sending out back in March are, unfortunately, still waiting to get their money that was supposed to help blunt some of the economic pain of the ongoing pandemic. Now that we’ve passed the IRS deadline for submitting your bank details for direct deposits, everyone who didn’t do so — which could be anyone from elderly taxpayers on fixed incomes to hourly workers whose time in front of a computer may be limited — is waiting on their check to arrive in paper form via the postal service, and is likely checking their stimulus check status daily in frustration. All the more so, when you consider the fact that lawmakers probably aren’t going to agree on a new round of stimulus checks anytime soon. This is it, in other words, for the foreseeable future.

But while it won’t help you get your check any faster, there is a neat solution for tracking it with a bit more specificity that most people probably aren’t using and may not even be aware of.

Are you lucky enough to be eligible for Amazon’s $25 Fire TV Stick 4K deal?

%name Are you lucky enough to be eligible for Amazon’s $25 Fire TV Stick 4K deal? by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K price in the USA has remained fairly steady for the past few months — unfortunately, that price has been the full $50 while other Amazon products like Echo speakers and Fire Tablets have gone on sale with discounts.
  • While most people will have to pay the full $50 for the device, there’s a special coupon that slashes the device down to its all-time lowest price.
  • Sadly, there’s a big catch: The coupon will only work for a select group of Amazon customers and the only way to find out if you’re eligible is to try it.
  • Anyone who isn’t eligible for the deal will still be able to save $10 on either Fire TV Stick model right now.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

There have been plenty of great deals on Amazon’s various own-brand devices over the past few months, and that might be somewhat surprising since the company shifted its resources away from “nonessential” products. Amazon’s goal was to free up warehouse space and shipping capacity for medical products so that it could ship them to hospitals more quickly. We’re not sure if Amazon did a good job of that or not, but what we do know is that there are plenty of solid deals right now and even protective gear that is shipping to everyone.

The best-selling products we’ve been covering lately are Jointown 3-ply face masks and Athphy KN95 face masks, both of which are in stock right now and ready to ship. Amazon’s best-selling hand sanitizer is back in stock as well, which is rare these days since there have been so many shipping delays. We haven’t seen very many shipping delays on Amazon’s various device lines, though. In fact, the company has continued to offer new deals all the time, focusing mainly on a different Amazon device category each week. This week, Echo smart speakers and Echo Show displays are the focus and you’ll find plenty of solid discounts such as an Echo Dot for $39.99 or $30 off the Echo Show 8. But there’s one special deal you won’t find anywhere on that page or anywhere else, and it might just be the hottest deal on Amazon’s entire site right now.

If you’re one of the lucky people eligible to get in on the action based on Amazon’s unknown criteria, you can slash the price of the $50 Fire TV Stick 4K down to just $24.99. That is not a typo. It’s the lowest price ever for a 4K Fire TV Stick, matching Amazon’s deal from Prime Day 2019. As we mentioned, the only problem is that not everyone is eligible for this deal. Go to the Fire TV Stick 4K page on Amazon’s website and if you get lucky, you might see a note under the $49.99 price that looks like this:

Now, it’s important to note that you need to give this deal a shot even if you don’t see that note because the special coupon might still work. Drop a Fire TV Stick 4K into your cart and use the promo code 4KFIRETV at checkout. If you’re eligible for the deal, the price will drop to $24.99. If you’re not eligible for the deal, you’ll see a message that the coupon code is not valid — but don’t get too upset because we’ve got another Fire TV Stick 4K deal for you down below.

Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $24.99 (use code 4KFIRETV)

First, you can read about the aforementioned offer on Amazon’s terms and conditions page right here:

This is a limited time offer. Qualifying customers only. Amazon reserves the right to modify or cancel the offer at any time. Offer good while supplies last. Offer only applies to Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote, streaming media player sold by Amazon Digital Services LLC. Shipping charges and taxes may apply to discounted items. Offer limited to one per customer and account. Offer is non-transferable, may not be resold, and may not be combined with other offers. To redeem this offer, please enter the promo code during checkout. Promotional code valid until 11:59 p.m. (PT) December 31, 2020. If any of the products related to this offer are returned, your refund will equal the amount you paid for the product, subject to applicable refund policies.

Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $24.99 (use code 4KFIRETV)

Now, if the coupon mentioned above doesn’t work for you, there’s actually another good deal that anyone can take advantage of. Both the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K are $10 off this week, so you can get the former for just $29.99 or the latter for $39.99!

Trump says he stopped taking hydroxychloroquine, but not because it makes coronavirus worse

%name Trump says he stopped taking hydroxychloroquine, but not because it makes coronavirus worse by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • President Donald Trump says he stopped taking the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine.
  • The drug has no proven benefits for coronavirus patients and doesn’t prevent COVID-19 infection.
  • Multiple studies have found the drug can actually make symptoms worse, and increase the death rate of COVID-19 among patients.

President Donald Trump made headlines around the world for his claim that he had begun taking the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine because he “heard a lot of good stories” suggesting that it could prevent or treat an infection of the novel coronavirus. Now, with evidence mounting that the likely does little to help and can make symptoms worse, Trump claims he’s stopping his self-medicated routine.

Trump claimed he took a two-week “program” of the drug after consulting with a White House doctor and after learning that multiple White House staffers had tested positive for COVID-19. His decision to stop taking the drug comes after repeatedly defending the use of the medication despite clear evidence that it should not be used to treat a coronavirus infection.
