Microsoft will issue one last Windows XP patch
Breaking up with dead operating systems is harder to do than Microsoft thought it would be. Microsoft announced on Thursday that it was issuing a critical patch for Internet Explorer that would be compatible with Windows XP versions of the Internet browser. The new patch for XP users comes even though Microsoft swore last month that it would stop issuing patches for any XP software unless users paid the company additional money to help keep support up.

Kickstarter continues its hot streak in funding 3D printer projects. The $300 Micro has blown past $3 million, weeks after the Robo3DPrinter raised nearly $650,000 in February. Now a plucky British company is making waves with the LIX 3D Pen, an experimental new 3D printer that enables people to literally doodle in the air.

Air travel is stressful enough when everything goes according to plan — now imagine being on a plane and having one of the aircraft’s engines burst into flames shortly after takeoff. That’s exactly what happened to an airliner full of passengers in Perth, Australia headed for Barrow Island earlier this week.

Call of Duty: Ghosts didn’t receive the fanfare that has become typical for a Call of Duty release, but now that the new generation of consoles has begun, Activision and the rotating development teams that keep the series chugging along year after year have a chance to bring something new to the table. On Thursday, Activision started the inevitable marketing onslaught for the next Call of Duty with a countdown on a page telling fans to “get ready for a new era of Call of Duty.”

Here’s what the Apple-Samsung jury really wants to know after its first day of deliberations
The eight-person jury in the second Apple vs. Samsung patent case in the U.S. is already working on deciding who copied whom now that lawyers delivered their closing arguments. But the case is far from clear to them, The Verge reports, as the jury has sent several questions to Judge Lucy Koh asking for more details. Questions given to the judge covered Steve Jobs’s influence on the lawsuits that lead to this patent battle in the first place, as well as more information on how the specific patents in question were developed and/or acquired.

Your next MacBook Air may have a touchscreen, but not where you think
A newly published patent application reveals that Apple is researching ways to improve user input on its MacBook laptops, by including a keyboard capable of offering more advanced keys ready to perform more than one task, AppleInsider reports. Individual keys on the keyboard would perform their normal tasks, but it would also include a touch-friendly display that might support additional gestures.

Deal alert: Verizon is selling the iPhone 5s, Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8) for $99 on contract
If you’re looking for a sweet Mother’s Day gift or if you just want to get some of the hottest smartphones released in the last year on the cheap, then Verizon has a proposition for you. Droid Life notices that between now and May 12th, you’ll be able to buy an iPhone 5s, a Samsung Galaxy S5 or an HTC One (M8) for only $99 with a two-year contract, or half off the regular price. You’ll also be able to pick up a Galaxy Note 3 for $199 on contract, which is down from its regular price of $299. All things told, this is a pretty sweet deal for four of the best smartphones in the world, even if it does mean being tied down to a two-year contract on Verizon.
