In our review of Samsung’s new Galaxy Note Edge smartphone last month, we spent a good amount of time discussing the trouble Samsung is currently facing. While the company is still pulling in billions in revenue each month, there is no question that Samsung is in trouble. One need only look at its most recent earnings report for evidence that is impossible to argue with: In the third quarter this year, Samsung’s net profit plummeted 60%.

Benchmark test scores provide a decent way to get a general idea of a smartphone or tablet’s performance, but at the end of the day they’re still just numbers on a piece of paper (or on a computer screen, as the case may be). In reality, a tablet with sky-high test scores might still provide a choppy experience when certain apps are in use, and an entry-level smartphone with low test scores might provide a user experience that is surprisingly smooth.

The problem, of course, is that it’s practically impossible to truly take everyday usage into consideration when quantifying and ranking smartphones and tablets.

T-Mobile is still coming up with clever new ways to shake up the wireless industry and on Tuesday it revealed its “Un-carrier 8.0” plan that will let users with capped plans roll over unused data an apply it to future months’ data caps. During his announcement of the new plan, T-Mobile CEO John Legere pointed out that many wireless customers have unused data every month because they are so nervous about getting hit with overage charges that they don’t want to come anywhere close to reaching their monthly limits.
