New Mercedes M178 V8 Engine Unveiled

Mercedes M178 V8 Engine 300x198 New Mercedes M178 V8 Engine Unveiled by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Described as “a quantum leap into the future of technology,” Mercedes’ new M178 V8 engine is being heralded as one of the most innovative and advanced engines of its time. The new M178 engine will be placed in Mercedes’ new flagship AMG model, the AMG GT, which will be replacing the SLS AMG upon its arrival in 2016.

The M178 is a 4L V8, which produces around 503 horsepower at 6,250 RPM. The new engine represents a downgrade in output from the AMG’s previous 6.2L, naturally aspirated V8, which produced around 631 horsepower. However, this may not necessarily mean worse performance, as the AMG GT will be far more technologically advanced, lighter and more efficient than the outgoing SLS AMG. Also, we can expect that the engineers at AMG will have their way with tuning the new M178, and we’ll probably see it top 600 horsepower, so fear not.

Among the most heralded features of the new engine are its compact design, its low power to weight ratio, and its groundbreaking fuel efficiency. This should come as no surprise, however, as there has been increased collaboration between the Mercedes Formula 1 engine supplier and the Mercedes production car arm of the company. The engine gains stability under pressure by virtue of a newly improved rigid crankcase and forged pistons. Friction is minimized as much as possible by a special nano-slide coating which coats the cylinder walls. The cylinder heads employ a zirconium alloy to give them maximum thermal conductivity ratings.

Lateral acceleration is maximized by bringing the engine’s center of gravity closer to the roadway; the engine’s setup in the new 4L has been lowered by 55 mm compared to previous AMG setups. Contributing to this is a power dry sump lubrication system, which eliminates the need for a front mid-engine oil pan. The new 4L also features an ultra-compact design.

In the twin turbocharged setup, both of the turbos, built by Borg Warner, are situated within the V8 engine block. Fresh air is routed to the exhaust turbos at lower engine output, in order to the increase performance and avoid turbo lag. Mercedes’ new AMG GT is designed to court a new generation of buyers. With this aim comes the responsibility of bringing the AMG line to the forefront of technology. The engine design team has done its work on the new M178, and now it’s up to the rest of the Mercedes team to make sure that the remaining elements of the AMG GT wear the badge proudly.

Exceptionally rare ’65 Ford GT40 Roadster prototype up for auction

Think of mid-engined supercars and your mind is bound to gravitate towards Europe, but the United States has been known to make a handful from time to time – exceptional vehicles from the likes of Vector, SSC, Mosler, Hennessey, and Saleen. But long before any of those came around, Ford famously became obsessed with beating Ferrari at its own game, leading to the development of the iconic GT40.

The story is well known, sending Ford to the checkered flag at Le Mans four times in a row in the late 1960s. Ford and Shelby also built over 100 for public consumption, but just four of them were roadsters. Of those only one remains in original condition, and now that exceedingly rare example going up for auction.

Consigned to RM Auctions for its mid-August sale during Pebble Beach weekend in Monterey, California, this 1965 model is the first GT40 Roadster built. It was used as a development and demonstration vehicle for Ford and Shelby. Carroll Shelby himself drove Henry Ford II in this very car during one of many test and demo events, this time held for Ford’s board of directors in Los Angeles.

Serial number GT/108 has been shown at numerous prestigious events throughout the years, and has been part of the same owner’s collection for over two decades now. RM won’t say just how much it’s expected to fetch at auction, but considering the big-buck lots it usually handles, the unique nature of this highly coveted vehicle, and the US$7 million brought in for the last GT40 prototype we saw go up for auction, you can bet there’ll be a lot of zeros in the final figure.

Filed under:

The city of Vancouver is already known for officially having the worst traffic in North America, but could it also be home to Canada’s worst car crashes? Well a case can certainly be made after spotting this crash in the downtown Vancouver between a bright yellow Lamborghini Aventador and a Chevrolet Cobalt yesterday afternoon.

We’re going to guess there was equal congestion from vehicles, as well as people taking photos of the pricey $500,000 wreck. Nik, who shared his Twitter pic with us, wrote: “I don’t think that will buff out.” From first appearances it looks like everyone involved was okay, meaning it’s time to share some of the funny tweets that followed this crash.

We almost missed the fact the crash happened in front of Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. – and the humble Chevy is, well, like a rock. For more, watch the post-crash video below.

Signing up for an exotic car tour or track event is an affordable way to make the dream of driving a supercar come true for a day. Here at Autoblog Canada, we’ve been lucky enough to attend a trackday hosted by Exotic Car Tours and loved getting seat time behind the wheel of several different six-figure supercars including the Ferrari shown above.

However, as the saying goes “with great power comes great responsibility” and this Ferrari driving rookie found that out the hard way by crashing hard into a guard rail while out on a sunny Sunday cruise just outside of Toronto. The entire spin out and crash was caught on video by a passenger in a trailing Audi R8 driving behind the now damaged Ferrari as part of the exotic car tour experience. Although the true cause of this expensive crash is unknown (was it the driver, the car/tires or a bit of both), let us know what you think on our Facebook page.

2016 Ford Mustang SVT hides big power under its domed hood

ford mustang svt spy shot lead 2016 Ford Mustang SVT hides big power under its domed hood by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Filed under:

With a number of 2015 Ford Mustang versions finally available to configure, the fun of speculating about next year’s high-performance ‘Stang can now begin. It looks like Ford has something seriously fun planned too. One of our spy photographers just snapped some fresh pics of the 2016 Mustang SVT, which is believed to be hiding the final body shape under all of that heavy camouflage.

Ford clearly doesn’t want prying eyes looking at its new pride and joy. It would be hard to put much more obfuscation on a car than this one wears – it even has mesh baffles around the exhausts to conceal how many there are and panels over the wheels to hide their design. However, the Blue Oval can’t keep everything a secret. The biggest clue that something special is hidden underneath is the massive hood bulge and vent in front of it. Clearly, whatever is under there is hungry for cool air. The shape of the camo indicates that there may be fender vents on each side, and there are also obscured outlets behind the front wheels likely to pull cool air through the brakes. At the rear, the concealment does its job, making it hard to observe any big changes. The fact that Ford wants it kept such a secret might indicate something, though.

A few photos of the interior show far less cover than the outside. You can easily make out the model’s 6,500 rpm redline with a possible 7,000 rpm over-rev function. The big Recaro sport seats also look quite supportive.

The name of the new high-performance Mustang is still somewhat of a mystery. While SVT is developing the model, it’s reportedly called simply the GT350. Until Ford decides that the camo is less necessary, at least these spy shots can help build more anticipation for its top pony car.

Avoid Overfilling GM Dry Sump Equipped Engines

corvette 2009 zr1 WEB 300x240 Avoid Overfilling GM Dry Sump Equipped Engines by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Many Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Z06 and GS models built between 2006 and 2013 are equipped with a dry sump engine lubrication system.

2009 Corvette ZR1 engine.

This high-performance system operates differently than a standard engine lubrication system and requires a special procedure when checking the engine oil level.

When adding engine oil to these vehicles, care must be taken to avoid overfilling the system. Overfilling may cause over-pressurization, which may result in damage to the engine and emissions system components. Also, if the amount of engine oil in the system is unknown due to repairs or other causes, the entire system should be drained and refilled with the correct amount of engine oil.

In order to get an accurate reading, the oil must be warm and the vehicle must be on level ground. A cold oil level in the dry sump tank may not indicate the correct amount of oil in the system.

Under normal operating conditions the engine oil pan does not store any oil, but if the vehicle has been parked for an extended period without the engine being started, some oil will seep back into the oil pan, reducing the amount of oil held in the dry sump tank. There could be no engine oil at all showing on the level indicator.

This condition is normal since the level indicator is designed to read the engine oil level only after the engine has run long enough to reach normal operating temperature. Do not add engine oil based on cold engine level indicator readings. The engine oil level on the level indicator will also be inaccurate if checked while the engine is running.

Service Procedure
Follow the service procedures, precautions and capacities listed in ALLDATA Repair before servicing the engine oil, oil tank and filter. The yellow-looped level indicator is located on the dry sump engine oil tank (No. 1 in image). The oil tank is external to the engine and is located on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Checking Oil Level
1. To obtain an accurate engine oil level reading, warm up the engine to at least 175°F (80°C).

2. Once the engine is warm, turn it off.

3. Wait at least five minutes (but not more than 20 minutes) to allow oil to drain and settle in the engine.

4. Remove the level indicator from the external engine oil tank and clean it with a lint-free paper towel or a cloth. Re-insert the level indicator into the external oil tank, pushing it all the way in until it stops.

5. Remove the level indicator from the oil tank and read the level on the cross-hatched area. Oil levels that fall in the cross-hatched area are normal.

Oil System Debris and Flushing
If replacement of the engine becomes necessary, or any failure is experienced that may cause debris to enter the oil supply, the remote oil tank must be disassembled and flushed. Additionally, the oil cooler and both oil cooler lines should be replaced. The remote oil tank can be removed from the vehicle and separated into two halves to facilitate a thorough cleaning.

Let’s face it, most car buyer’s in today’s consumer conscious crowd are far more interested in hearing fuel economy figures than horsepower numbers when it comes to choosing a new car. With gas prices still on the rise and more drivers on the road these days, several car manufacturers have remained focused on producing more fuel efficient cars in order to quickly capitalize on the gas sipping, money saving trend towards them.

Trusted financial advice website, Kiplinger put together its own list of what they consider the most fuel efficient cars. Although we agree with many of their top picks, we also noticed a few obvious choices didn’t quite seem to make the cut. It should also come as no surprise to learn Toyota claimed five of the top 10 fuel efficient spots on the list, as the eco-minded automaker continues to lead the way with its popular hybrid technology being sprinkled throughout its vehicle line-up.
