Chrome browser will make it harder for companies that are not Google to track you online

Google is about to make a move that will prove that it’s also getting a lot more serious about privacy than you’d expect from a company that collects a treasure trove of information about you. A report says that Google will launch a new feature for the Chrome browser that will make it a lot harder for companies to track you online, but only as long as those companies are not Google.

HBO’s reaction to the Starbucks cup is the best thing about ‘Game of Thrones’ this week

Is the coffee dark and full of flavors in that Game of Thrones shot from Sunday’s episode that everybody is talking about? Well, not quite. HBO said in a statement that “the latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake,” adding that “Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.” That’s easily the best thing coming out of episode 4, The Last of the Starks, which is one of those Game of Thrones episodes that could have been so great but really failed to live up to our expectations.

Wild video shows a Beluga whale retrieving an iPhone someone dropped in the sea

The PR team for Beluga whales is really killing it lately. In the span of 10 days we’ve seen two Beluga whale stories hit the news cycle for the most bizarre and incredulous of reasons. Just a few days ago, for instance, Norwegian officials revealed that they came into contact with a Beluga whale that may have been trained — by Russian naval forces — for spying missions.

If you have a tough time believing that story, you may have an even tougher time believing that a Beluga whale in Norway went diving after an iPhone someone accidentally dropped into the sea. What’s more, the whale managed to retrieve the iPhone and bring it back to the surface. Does it sound crazy? Of course. But not to worry, there’s actually video of the event which, naturally, has been blowing up all over Twitter and Reddit.

13-year old boy dies after allergic reaction to cheese thrown by classmate

The world is a strange place when you’re 13 years old. You’re tackling a variety of school subjects while trying to navigate the choppy waters of personal relationships, forging friendships, and figuring out your place in the grand scheme of things. For a 13-year-old boy from West London named Karanbir Cheema, all those troubles paled in comparison to something that loomed even larger: an intense food allergy that left him vulnerable to dairy, nuts, eggs, and wheat.

The young boy’s death — the apparent result of a classmate throwing cheese at him during lunch at school — is now the center of a legal case that could see two now 15-year-old boys face some very adult charges.

Ahead of Google I/O 2019 getting under way in earnest starting Tuesday, one early announcement the company decided to go ahead and tee up on Monday was a long overdue redesign for Android Auto — Google’s smart driving companion and infontainment setup that’s getting a fresh look and new features this summer.

The overriding goals of this refresh for Android Auto, which has expanded to now support 500 car models from 50 different brands, is to help drivers get on the road faster, see more useful information and to have common driving tasks generally simplified. That’s according to a company blog post today from Android Auto product manager Rod Lopez, who adds that Google will be sharing more details at Tuesday’s “What’s New with Android for Cars” session during I/O.

We often take modern conveniences like keyless entry and automatic garage doors for granted, but residents of North Olmsted, Ohio, just experienced what it is like to have both of those features taken away without warning.

As WKYC reports, city residents have been dealing with a truly bizarre phenomenon in recent weeks, with car key fobs and garage door openers dying seemingly out of nowhere. Nothing seemed to fix the problem, and after weeks of investigating it became clear that something was creating a strong radio signal in the same frequency as is often used by such devices.

Watch a Tesla Model 3 quickly swerve and avoid an accident at the last second

It’s a shame that much of the narrative surrounding Tesla these days centers on the company’s stock price, Elon Musk’s shenanigans on Twitter, or other trivial details that don’t truly capture some of the impressive automotive innovations Tesla has rolled out at a slow and steady pace over the years.

Even today, a talking head on CNBC proclaimed that the ‘Tesla dream’ had come to an end and that the reality is that Tesla simply is unable to execute as promised. But if we move past the talking points, there’s a lot of good news lurking beneath the surface. As a prime example, the number of Tesla vehicles on the road has exploded in recent years. To this point, Tesla deliveries from Q1 of 2018 to Q1 of 2019 jumped by an astounding 110%. In turn, we’ve seen a discernible uptick in videos depicting Tesla vehicles on Autopilot avoiding potentially tragic collisions.

Most of the flagship phones set to launch in the first half of the year are already here, save for the OnePlus 7 that comes next week. That means we already have rumors about the flagship phones that we’ll see in stores in the second half of 2019. We’ve seen a bunch of iPhone 11, Pixel 4, and Galaxy Note 10 reports already, but now it’s time to talk about a phone you won’t find in stores out West. That’s because that phone has already leaked.

Google now wants to crack down on cookies to convince you it cares about privacy

On the heels of Google’s announcement that an awesome new privacy tool is coming that users can rely on to auto-delete their location history, now we’re getting word of a new dashboard-like tool that’s also coming to the company’s Chrome browser and which represents another pro-privacy move — or, at least, the semblance of one. The dashboard will let you have a greater understanding of the cookies that are tracking you online, in addition to giving you a way to limit them.

This news comes via The Wall Street Journal, which reports that the search giant has actually been working on this tool for six years. It was an on-again, off-again project at the company that started to pick up speed last year in the post-Cambridge Analytica era.

Massive dust storms may have sucked Martian water away

%name Massive dust storms may have sucked Martian water away by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Mars as we know it today is a mostly dry, dusty place with a few pockets of ice in remote regions. It’s barren and we’re pretty sure it’s lifeless today, but that might not have always been the case. Scientists think that Mars was once a relatively wet world, but if that’s true then where did all of that moisture go?

A new study published in Nature attempts to answer that question, and a recent event on the Red Planet may have shown us exactly how it lost the majority of its water. That event, a planet-wide dust storm that killed NASA’s Opportunity rover, revealed some interesting clues about how water may have escaped Earth’s most similar neighbor.
