On the heels of the US government’s announced in March that the first US exascale computer is being built just outside Chicago and coming in 2021, the US government announced today that it’s also commissioned a manufacturer to build what would be the most powerful computer in the world that will also make its debut in 2021, keeping the US at the forefront of supercomputer supremacy.

The company building the new supercomputer, named Frontier, is Cray Inc., which will use high-performance AMD EPYC CPU and Radeon Instinct GPU technology in the system, and it will boast a performance greater than 1.5 exaflops.

New breakthrough could yield the first 100% recyclable plastics

%name New breakthrough could yield the first 100% recyclable plastics by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re surrounded by plastics for much of our lives. Plastics are cheap and easy to make, they’re often incredibly durable, and they last just about forever. Unfortunately, those upsides are also terrible news for the environment, as plastic waste continues to pile up despite recycling efforts and public awareness campaigns.

One of the biggest problems with the popular material is that even recyclable plastics aren’t always able to be broken down and used again. In fact, less than one-third of recyclable plastic is repurposed after the recycling process, with the rest being tossed along with other non-recyclable waste or incinerated. A new research effort led by scientists at Berkeley Lab could provide a solution in the form of plastics that are designed from the ground-up to be fully recyclable.

Beware: This new robocall scam could cost you big time

%name Beware: This new robocall scam could cost you big time by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It seems that robocallers have have begun to evolve a bit, as media coverage brings increased scrutiny and potential regulatory action in response to their practices. Now that consumers are starting to get wise to the barrage of robocalls and the myriad spam calls that flood their phones on the daily, robocallers have increasingly found themselves less able to trick unsuspecting consumers into actually answering their phones and engaging with them. Which is why they’ve moved on to a new strategy — the one-ring call.

It’s a significant enough move on their part that the Federal Communications Commission has already decided to issue a warning to consumers about this new tactic, hoping you’ll be able to avoid it. So what is it, exactly?

NASA will test asteroid defenses by slamming a spacecraft into a space rock in 2022

If Earth were ever to be threatened by a large space rock — and it definitely will at some point in the future — humanity is going to need to have a plan. Astronomers know this, which is why simulated exercises like the one that took place last week are so important, but actually testing possible defense strategies is something that still needs to happen.

In 2021, NASA will launch the DART spacecraft. DART, which stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test, is designed to slam directly into a space rock known as Didymos B, which is the smaller half of a binary asteroid, the other half of which is known as Didymos A. The results from the test could shape Earth’s planetary defense systems for decades to come.

Netflix is now streaming one of the biggest movies in the world

%name Netflix is now streaming one of the biggest movies in the world by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the top-grossing movies in the world right now is a sci-fi blockbuster that’s racked up an impressive global box office haul on par with some of Marvel’s big 2019 hits, like Captain Marvel. An achievement that’s seriously impressive when you stop to consider that this Chinese-made film in question, Wandering Earth, hasn’t really been available to US audiences at all up to this point, other than via very quick, limited screening. And yet, it’s currently the third highest-grossing film worldwide, even with the insane response to Avengers: Endgame.

It likely won’t be as under-the-radar among American audiences for much longer, however. Thanks to Netflix’s acquisition of the rights to the film back in February and its debut on the streamer with pretty much no fanfare in recent days, that means the biggest non-Marvel movie released in 2019 thus far is now available to stream in the US.

An unidentified group of hackers that are referred to as Shadow Brokers posted several NSA hacking tools online in 2016 and 2017. But a new report reveals that some of the NSA’s malware tools were reversed-engineered long before that by Chinese hackers who then used them in cyberattacks targeting other countries.

Four weeks in, ‘Game of Thrones’ season 8 is still drawing record viewership

%name Four weeks in, ‘Game of Thrones’ season 8 is still drawing record viewership by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Sunday’s fourth episode of the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones certainly had a tough act to follow, given that the bloody, battle-heavy third episode of the season had been so highly anticipated and delivered on its promise of pretty much wall-to-wall action. The following episode was more of a rearranging of the players and getting everything in place ahead of the final confrontation of the season — and the series, sniff! — against Cersei and her forces that have been massing at King’s Landing.

As such, the ratings for Sunday’s episode The Last of the Starks did drop a bit from The Long Night, the preceding episode focused on the battle for Winterfell against the army of the dead. But while the just-released figures do show a dip, they’re still on par with season 8’s record-setting premiere and speak to the sustained level of excitement that this season of GoT has generated.
